Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. In these movies, 250 foot tall robots defend Earth from an assault of other worldly giant monsters(kaiju).

Personally, I could have done without the word balloons or the silly audio effects used when Godzilla and Angilas "talk" to each other. The audio effects during this sequence sound like someone dragging a stylus over a vinyl record. loco2

I agree entirely.

I'm not sure if anybody else already posted this, but has anyone else notice that Angirus' mouth does not open at all in this movie (bar during stock footage from Destroy All Monsters)? He roars at all times with his mouth closed, or perhaps even hanging open, but it never moves, opens or closes. I love this movie, but that annoys me. I have a feeling that the suit was broken and never fixed due to the film's low budget and probable short time taken to film it. Note how, even during a very brief appearance at the beginning of the film, in Godzilla vs Megalon the following year it was a brand new suit with bigger eyes (like those of the 1973-75 Godzilla). The suit was seemingly changed again for Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla the year after that one. Share your thoughts on this matter. What do people think?

I honestly didn't notice this. The Anguirus suit is definitely showing some wear in Godzilla Vs Gigan(1972). I'm assuming it was used one final time in the '74 Godzilla film. ?

I think it's possible, but even then it looks different. It might just be me, but the design used in Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla (1974) reminds me more of the look Anguirus had in Godzilla Raids Again (1955), with a longer tail and seemingly fiercer look; plus the mouth opens. It's hard to say, since TOHO as well as Tsuburaya were keen to reuse their suits as much as possible. Perhaps it's just a modified suit. Who could say.

I think I heard somewhere that the '74 Anguirus suit was a new one. It looked kind of new, although I haven't seen the movie in a while.

This movie is so much fun. The really crappy stock footage and sub-par effects don't even bother me anymore. It's just a bunch of mindless fun, which I feel is greatly unappreciated these days.

Hence the reason why when Baragon was scheduled to be used in certain scenes in a few Godzilla movies, (DAM, GvsMG '74) his suit was always out on loan to Tsuburaya Productions. Of course, I'm sure a lot of time and effort went into making those suits and time and money constraints didn't allow them to make more than one suit. Thus leading to using some suits over and over again.

One of my favorite Godzilla movies. I don't even mind the stock footage that was used. (except for the Ghidrah, the Three Headed Monster stock footage battle with Godzilla... just felt out of place) I especially liked the one on one battle sequences between Godzilla and Gigan. My only gripe with this movie is that I always felt it should not have included King Ghidorah. I thought he was kind of useless in this movie. (especially after he got the holy hell beat out of him and killed in Destroy All Monsters) And they should've always gave Gigan some sort of beam weapon to use. Still one of my favorite G movies though.

Was watching Godzilla vs. Gigan and wanted to see how they did the Angilas blood spurt, so I slowed the scene down and imagine my surprise when I saw a hand holding Angilas' horn.

Spaced out: Godzilla Vs Gigan(1972) - revisited
I remember the first time I watched Godzilla Vs Gigan(1972). It was on local Atlanta(GA) TV station "Superstation TBS" back in 1987 and was called "Godzilla On Monster Island". In 1995 I purchased a VHS of the original Toho version with English subtitles and watched that. My opinion of this movie changed for the better...not much, but somewhat.

Godzilla Vs Gigan, directed by Jun Fukuda and originally released to Japanese theaters back in March of 1972, is a "mixed bag" for me. There are numerous things I like about this movie and also as many things about it that I despise.

In Godzilla Vs Gigan(1972) a "for hire" (comics) artist/illustrator named Genko Kotaka, and just hired by new employers at a local theme park called "Children's Land", begins to think there is something very wrong with his new bosses. His initial misgivings are on the mark: turns out his new employers are extraterrestrial, insectoid aliens disguised as humans who are predictably hell bent on colonizing the Earth.

The aliens, to aid in their colonization plans of Earth, bring a new, cyborg monster named "Gigan" to Earth as well as the space monster "King Ghidorah".

Meanwhile, Godzilla has heard the aliens communications devices at work and, sensing something wrong, swims from Monster Island to Japan along with ground pounder "Angilas". A huge battle begins with Gigan & King Ghidorah squaring off against Godzilla & Angilas.

Gengo Kotaka, his girlfriend "Tomoe" and two others band together to stop the aliens while the monsters hash it out. (no other spoilers)

Thumbs up:

1. the design of new monster "Gigan". This kaiju possesses a buzzsaw on its chest, armored plating, has menacing looking hooks for hands and looks formidable overall. The monster provides Godzilla with a tough fight.

2. the "oil refinery" sequence where the four monsters make their initial contact with each other. Marvelously done with lots of explosions and plenty of high speed filming. Major kudos to special effects director Teruyoshi Nakano, whose pyrotechnic effects in this film are often spectacular.

3. Yuriko Hishimi, who plays Gengo Kotaka's girlfriend "Tomoko Tomoe". Yuriko Hishimi is gorgeous and her character in this movie, well versed in karate, kicks major alien ass. sickko

4. the "Godzilla vs Gigan" sequence during the final battle with all four monsters. A well choreographed fight with both monsters delivering some punishment on each other.

Thumbs down:

1. "Takasugi", the corn on the cob eating hippie. I understand that some cast members may be a source of comic relief in this and other movies but for me the only relief I felt was when he wasn't on screen. loco2

2. the use of stock footage, especially during the initial assault on Tokyo by Gigan and King Ghidorah.

3. the presentation of the JSDF in this film. The defense forces are represented basically by stock footage from other G films and by one high ranking officer who seems remarkably nonchalant despite the fact two planet threatening kaiju have just appeared in the skies over Tokyo.

Despite the poor story, the overuse of stock footage, and the bad acting this movie was always a lot of fun in the end. It's like getting to hear Ifukube's greatest hits with new (somewhat) monster action. But the movie builds, give a teaser (with Anguirus coming to Segami Bay) and builds again up to a lot of very fun monster action. Despite this film's short comings, it does have one of the longest city destruction scenes since the original Godzilla.

Well considering how often this seems to happen, I'm sure this is just another day on the force to him.

"For you, the day Godzilla repelled an alien menace was the most important day of your life. But for me? It was Tuesday." coffee1

Anyway, now that I have the new DVD, I just watched this movie for the first time since my parent's VHS player broke down years ago. It's still largely the same as I remember it. The stock footage is as obvious as ever. I love the weak attempt at darkening the footage from Ghidrah: The Three-Headed Monster and Destroy All Monsters to make it match the film's nighttime battle, and Mothra stands out even more than I remember in the Ghidrah clips.

That said, Gigan makes an excellent first impression with this movie, probably coming the closest to killing Godzilla out of any monster up to that point.

It's the first movie in which Godzilla bleeds, though the effect of seeing him bleed for the first time in ANY canon was lost on me the first time I saw it as a kid, due to the fact that I'd seen the original Mechagodzilla and about half of the Heisei era films by the time I saw Gigan. I try to imagine all the little kids in Japan who saw this in theaters, and their reactions to seeing bright red blood come hosing out of their cherished hero as Gigan flew by and tore his shoulder open. It must have been like seeing Luke Skywalker loose his hand in Empire Strikes Back.
