The Madman release of Godzilla vs Megalon is pretty good, the Japanese version made the film seem better.

I have a DVD-R of Godzilla Vs Megalon(1973), the R2 print with English subtitles. I am going to buy the "Madman" release in September or October of this year.

Here's a review I did, the review is all my opinions.

**May contain spoilers**

Godzilla vs Megalon was made in 1973, made on a low budget and is claimed to be the worst of all Godzilla films by some Godzilla fans, in my opinion, it isn't the worst, it is in fact slightly better then Godzilla's revenge and if this film is talked about as a Godzilla film, Godzilla 1998.

Godzilla vs Megalon is a fun cheesy film, most of the Special Effects are bad but there is one really great effect when a dam is destroyed by Megalon. Now onto monsters, The main enemy is Megalon, it is an interesting Godzilla foe, maybe thats one of the reasons it became one of Godzilla's most famous foes or perhaps its because Godzilla vs megalon is the most widely seen Godzilla film. now the next monster well isn't a monster but a robot named Jet Jaguar, while I think he is alright I have to say he is one of the worst characters made, he is like a copy of Ultraman or a robotic clown, but as I found out Jet jaguar was a contest winning design made by a kid, perhaps that explains why he looks similar to Ultraman, the one thing which is good about Jet Jaguar is his ability to grow.

Now Gigan (Who was Godzilla's enemy in the previous film) looks the same as he did before, now onto Godzilla himself, the suit used in this film is newly made and is the fastest made Godzilla suit, it makes Godzilla have a puppy dog face, but he does look alright, the look improves in the two later films.

The score for this film is alright, but does get annoying, the Jet Jaguar song is... well fine, but good it only is heard once, Godzilla's atomic ray is badly animated, but at least it is blue and better then the mist/smoke used in Ghidorah the three headed monster for Godzilla's atomic ray.

The film also has one of the most Memorable scenes, THE TAIL SLIDE!.

Now film might be bad, but it is fun and if you want to see Godzilla at his cheesiest, this is the film to see.

4/10

Indeed. It's unfortunate that Godzilla vs Megalon(1973) is also the most viewed "Godzilla" film worldwide, based on the excessive bargain bin VHS and cheap Alpha Video(and other) DVDs available on the market. This film was also aired, and lampooned, in a 1977 NBC television special hosted by comedian John Belushi. Belushi, known for his slapstick routine, crude remarks and frequent profanity laced stand up comedy routines, played the role of goofball to the hilt during the broadcast, the film itself chopped down to less than an hour in run time. This movie has also appeared, not surprisingly, on Mystery Science Theater 3000. Tom Servo and company were even more merciless on the film than Belushi. very funny The VHS and various "cheapie" DVD prints have done nothing but reduce the credibility of this 1973 film, made on a smaller budget(as you mentioned), even further. thumbs down

Agreed, though I admit I also liked his colorful design...despite the fact he looked like a ripoff of Ultraman. tongue-1

I found the score for this film tolerable, but I did not like the "quacking" Godzilla theme(repeated use of horns as the monster appears). This theme was first used in Godzilla vs Hedorah(1971). thumbs down

Indeed. It's memorable for me as well: my recollection of this scene is always bad.

I'm a little more charitable in my rating of this film, giving it 5/10. Posted Image

As I mentioned previously I liked certain effects scenes, e.g. the lake draining out, Megalon's attack on the dam and the first battle between Jet Jaguar and Megalon. I also thought the human character action, that is, the violence, was interesting, even a little funny.

There were obviously many negatives for me regarding Godzilla Vs Megalon, none more so than the heavy use of stock footage and the laughable appearance of Robert Dunham in his toga like Seatopian "uniform", which IMO would look ridiculous...even at a costume party.

Eh, while I think you're probably right here I've seen a few Asian superheroes that don't exactly look like Ultraman ripoffs. Ever seen Fireman? heyo

Topic: Anyone else around here dislike the "handshake" scene between Jet Jaguar and Godzilla as much as I did?

IMO, Fireman DOES look like an Ultraman rip-off.

But of course, there are different ones too.

Still considering some different pictures...

And really now. I can't find Fireman much more different from the Ultramen than say... Astra or Ultraman Leo.

Okay. thumbs up

Fireman also reminds me, somewhat, of Kamen Rider.

Why don't you wait a while batrus before doing that. I don't believe there are enough "Kamen Rider" fans here at this site-I can tell you I don't know a lot about him either. Do me a favor and don't start a thread on him yet. I would appreciate it pal. Thanks. :)

After watching this film last night, I could tell you what really got me laughing, as it always does- the scene where that little kid flies the remote control airplane into that Seatopians face.

That was a humorous scene. What gave me a good chuckle in Godzilla Vs Megalon(1973) was seeing American actor Robert Dunham in his Seatopian uniform. dancing cheeky smiley
