The announcer in that trailer really tried to make it seem like a dramatic movie. That was pretty funny. |

Just got to watching this film and I'll say right off....this is an embarrassing entry and one of the worst.....in fact this put some of Gamera's worst entries to shame in terms of embarrassment. The budget here was clearly very small so production values are rather poor and also suffered from having an annoying kid....which you may be able to look past if you watch some of the showa Gamera films. We also have a Ultraman ripoff named Jet Jaguar and the equally embarrassing people from the underwater nation....just a variation on the Aliens except not from space. This film also originated the cute Godzilla look which would continue over in the next 2 and much better films. As bad as the film clearly is it's not a total disaster as it's not a boring film and had Gigan which I consider a pretty good monster. Another positive side note is this film would make for great entertainment while you are drinking....unfortunately I was sober at the time. Still better then Revenge and Final Wars. |

Keep this in mind, Slain, the movie was targeted at young kids. When I was child this was probably my favorite Godzilla movie. Now, as an adult I realize it is pretty bad but I still find it entertaining for what it is: goofy, nostalgic fun. |

I'm well aware that it was more aimed at kids which is why I brought up Gamera films which also often leans being kinds movies which I personally thought for the fairs better then this....besides that I still didn't rank it worst....maybe if I had seen it when I was younger I would have more of a soft spot but since I didn't I don't. |

Another thing I think people should keep in mind, regarding Godzilla Vs Megalon(1973): the general popularity of Godzilla films was significantly waning as fantasy television in Japan, manifest through many of the "Ultraman" TV series, became increasingly the entertainment of choice among Japanese fans of sci-fi/fantasy. Toho allocated smaller budgets to these films in the early seventies, so obviously that equated to more budget conserving measures like the use of stock footage, often ad nauseam. Could another director, besides Jun Fukuda, have produced a better overall version of Godzilla vs Megalon than what we got? Possibly, obviously, but I'm inclined to think Jun Fukuda got as much as he could, so to speak, out of the budget he was given by Toho. Slain, are you watching the MST3K epsiode of this film, the Alpha Video version, or the widescreen and uncut version of this film? |

I honestly don't know, it was off a CD (not ever on a DVD) that a friend got from some shop in Melbourne's China town but while in it was indeed in Japanese they quality was poor to day the least.....to be honestly I hightly doubt it was a legally sold version. |

The MST3K version is the best way to watch Megalon, in my view. The commentary is hilarious! "Jet Jag-waaaaaaaaaaa!" |

Trust MST3K to suitably mock it.....while I didn't actually see the episode actually I've only seen afew but despite all misgivings I may have this film makes for good fodder if you are in the mood to mock bad films. It's certainly hammy enough. |

Well it's probably because then better ones more people are inclined to agree and if everyone has the same opinion then it doesn't leave much room for debate and would become far more redundant. Opposing views always tend to spark more interesting discussion. |

That being the case I better get busy drumming up debate in the Godzilla's Revenge thread. ![]() Topic: I've seen the "quacking" Godzilla theme consistently blasted by fans of G movies. I'm assuming, Slain, you probably don't like the score for Godzilla Vs Megalon very much. |

I didn't care for it but on the other hand I've heard worse and the score was the least of the films problems. The music was definately a sign of the time it didn't have any go to it....everything about it even the music screamed how low the budget was but as I said at least it wasn't boring. |

Certainly Godzilla vs Megalon was, despite it's poor effects, fairly well chock full of action. I wasn't enamored with the fight choreography involving the human characters...assuming there was any.

That fact does work in it's favour and I could probably grow to enjoy the film more once the embarrassment facts dies down because there is no question this film has that element that makes you cringe while watching. |

It seem in the 70's Toho wanted to follow in the success of Ultraman which might be why Godzilla became even more of a heroic model then he was for the duration of the 60's and that absolutely explains Jet Jaguar and Zone Fighter....I don't know why Toho needed 2 Ultraman rips though. |

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4...eApSGrQLq75W4BA Looking over this trailer I'm of the belief that even simply using more high speed filming for the monster battles would have improved the perception of Godzilla Vs Megalon in the minds of those who have watched it. I hope Mediablasters(or somebody) can get the North American rights to this movie and get it out to R1 DVD in widescreen and English subtitles. |

what do you get if a movie is made in 3 weeks, the goji suit in 1, and less money for the spx. you get a lousy film! godzilla's revenge was bad, but the effects are still good, for goji vs megalon, the effects are so so bad. the lighting is bad too. to me the goji suit sucked. the only good thing was gigan. megalon is cool, but the suit is just, good looking but in bad shape. jet jaguar is dum. |

For the budget that he has given to work with, Toho director Jun Fukuda produced, IMO a surprisingly entertaining film in Godzilla Vs Megalon(1973). That said I personally find this movie among the weakest of all Godzilla movies, but that is not an indictment of Jun Fukuda, who directed the movie. In fairness to this man had he been given more time and money I suspect the film would have been proportionately better. It's easy to bash these films, especially this one, given it's wide release worldwide to discount DVD, these discs affording those that buy them an often grainy and cropped(full framed) presentation of the film, as well as the other things in the movie that resulted from Fukuda's time and budget constraints: a lack of high speed filming and stock footage. Godzilla Vs Megalon has been among the most widely distributed Godzilla films, on VHS and DVD, the world over. It also has appeared on Mystery Science Theater, lampooned by Tom Servo and his pals. The unfortunate reality here is that for a long time, and for many people, the cheapie DVD or VHS of this film has been the only Godzilla film ever viewed by the casual fan or person curious about Godzilla movies. Obviously the recent Region 1 DVDs of Godzilla movies by Classic Media have made more options available to those interesting in buying Godzilla DVDs. Godzilla Vs Megallon(1973) has never been released to Region 1 DVD uncut and in it's original aspect ratio of 2:35.1 letterbox(widescreen). Like other G films that have been blasted repeatedly for being sub par, I again would submit that the overall disdain for this film might be considerably less if the movie were watched uncut, in it's original language and in it's original aspect ratio. |
