Wow, the more I think about it, the more performances I want to add, so I'll end, here! :)

Feel free to talk about as many as you want that come to mind. :)

Re: Shelley Winters in The Poseidon Adventure(1972)-I agree with you that her performance was great. Her character in this film was a truly remarkable woman, self-deprecating, kind, and also phenomenally brave. I admired the way she stepped up and took action to save the minister(played by Gene Hackman), who was trapped underwater. That said I hated the fact she died in this film. :( A memorable performance by this actress, in a marvelous film. thumbs up

I agree 100%! I still bawl my eyes out whenever I watch that final scene of hers. I first saw this at the Drive-In with my Mom and a friend of hers and I was 7 or 8 at the time and I was totally shocked by her death and can remember laying down in the back seat of the car and quietly crying my eyes out. :(

As mentioned in my first reply, Peter Cushing's portrayal of Arthur Grimsdyke in the 1972 Amicus film, Tales From the Crypt is easily one of his best performances. The sadness he displays at the cruelty his character endures breaks my heart and his performance is even more impressive when given the fact, this film was one of the first he made following the death of his wife.

Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier and Katharine Hepburn in the film, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. A fantastic film with excellent performances by all three. Tracy's final speech at the end of the film is extremely touching and you can easily see tears in the eyes of Hepburn. I think they can probably be attributed to the fact that Hepburn knew this would be their final film together, as Tracy died just a couple of weeks after filming had wrapped for the film.

Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda in, On Golden Pond. As Norman and Ethel Thayer, these two actors are in their element. They both did an outstanding job with their roles and despite the fact I'm not a Jane Fonda fan, she did an adequate job with her role and I think the relationship between Chelsea and Norman Thayer mirrored that of Jane and Henry Fonda. Doug McKeon also held his own with Fonda and Hepburn and the film definitely benefits from the strong performances.

I'll probably add more to my 'list'. :)

Guess Who's Coming To Dinner? is a great one. I saw this film in it's entireity a few years ago on AMC. Tracy/Hepburn is a hard cinema combination to beat-two people who were absolute masters of their craft(acting). Spencer Tracy's final speech in this movie is memorable. He reminded me a lot of my own a father, gruff on the outside, occasionally misunderstood, always stubborn, but at his core a decent, fair, and good-hearted man. Spencer Tracy's on screen chemistry with the elegantly beautiful and classy Katherine Hepburn has been, IMO, seldom matched by anyone.

Other memorable acting performances: Bill The Butcher, played by Daniel Day Lewis, in Gangs Of New York. Also, Jack Lemmon, who was marvelous in The Apartment(1960) and Days Of Wine And Roses(1962)

I'd also rank Christopher Lee's performances in; The Mummy, Curse of Frankenstein and Dracula (Horror of) as some wonderful performances by Lee. In, The Mummy, Lee does an outstanding job of showing emotions with nothing but the use of his eyes. In, Curse of Frankenstein, Lee once again uses certain facial expressions and body movement to show emotion and does it very well. As for, Dracula (Horror of), Lee is definitely a commanding presense as Dracula and is definitely a good looking Dracula.

"The Mummy"(1959) is very good. I have this one on DVD. I am still "playing catch up", if you will, in watching many of these Hammer horror films, especially the Dracula features, so I may come across as an ignoramus regarding some of these Hammer films. Speaking of horror, I thought Vincent Price was especially good in House Of Wax(1953) and The Last Man On Earth(1963). thumbs up

I like how Liam Nesson was in Star Wars Episode 1.

Indeed, I also liked his performance in this movie, as he played Qui Gon Jinn, Obi Wan Kenobi's Jedi instructor and master. If you liked his performance in this film, Gojira2, you would also like him, I think, in Darkman(1990) and Batman Begins(2005). thumbs up

Price was very much like Peter Cushing, in my opinion, I never saw either man give a poor performance, so I agree with those choices, as well! thumbs up

I also think Edmund Gwenn gave an excellent performance in, Miracle On 34th Street. He brought to the role of Kris Kringle, a child-like innocence and made the film a joy to watch.

Margaret Rutherford as Miss Jane Marple also ranks high for me. I love the Miss Marple films in which Rutherford starred and I'm always amazed when these films are panned by film fans. I was thrilled when these films were released earlier this year and I've already watch them all, several times.

Men like Vincent Price, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee were all consummate professionals, who understood all of the various aspects of acting, from the technical points(memorization of lines) to the artistic points(the use of facial expressions and tone inflections in their voices). It is actors such as these, that can blend both together, and add a little of themselves personally to each role, that makes them such a pleasure to watch on the big screen, or on DVD.

Other great acting performances I have seen over the years:

1. Gregory Peck in Twelve O'Clock High(1950) and To Kill A Mockingbird(1962)
2. Burt Lancaster in Birdman Of Alcatraz(1962)
3. Orson Welles in Touch Of Evil(1958)
4. Jack Nicholson in The Shining(1980)
5. Cary Grant in Destination Tokyo(1942)
6. Clark Gable in Gone With The Wind(1939)
7. Peter O'Toole in Lawrence Of Arabia(1962)
8. Hilary Swank in Million Dollar Baby(2004)

bravo clap

More great choices and films, packmule. thumbs up I sat and watched, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, last night at it was on TCM and I have to say, the entire cast really did a wonderful job. I gave props to Tracy, Hepburn and Poitier in an earlier post, but watching the film, last night, it really hit home that all involved did a fine job.

I understand that this was among Spencer Tracy's last films-in fact, he was feeling somewhat ill during the filming of this 1967 release, was he not? confused

Takeshi Kaneshiro in Returner ( I thought he was perfect for the role of Miyamoto)

Pierce Brosnan in Goldeneye ( I think this was his best performance of all the James Bond films he has starred in)

Tom Cruise in Minority Report ( One of my top favorite films, I can't think of anyone else doing a better job than Cruise with the role of Chief John Anderton)

I'll add more to the list later...
