Sorry for going off topic but:...

I just got back from the wedding.

It was the first one I have ever been to, and it was pretty cool.

The bride wanted me to video tape the wedding ceremony and put it on DVD, and Im getting paid $50.00 for it

The reception wasn't that bad either, its just I am a little anti-social, so it wasn't as fun as it could have been, but my friend ended up throwing up dead

The last wedding reception I went to(in September 2005) I knew only two people(out of the three hundred who attended). I'm not very good at starting conversations with people in social settings so I can understand your "anti-social" sentiments. The seafood island at the reception locale was also continually inundated with hungry children( groink! ) and I could not get a single bite of food from the rotating seafood table-that also put me in an anti-social mood freak out

I hope your friend who ended up sick is okay. I know what that's like. dead

Glad to see you were able to make some $ from this affair. dancing fruit

Sling Blade(1995) was on the IFC(Independent Film Channel) today, in widescreen and without commercial interruption(as all of IFC's movies are). I hope anyone who hasn't seen this movie, which stars Billy Bob Thornton, John Ritter and Dwight Yoakam, will take the time to either buy it or rent it on DVD. In this feature Billy Bob Thornton plays "Carl Childers", a mildly retarded man who is released from a state institution and is forced to re-enter society by means of a neighboring town.(no other spoilers). Thornton's portrayal of "Carl" in this film is, IMO, nothing short of brilliant and remains one of my favorite performances by an actor in a movie. thumbs up

This performance by Thornton was indeed an outstanding bit of work. A co-worker of mine sent the VHS home with me back in '96 or '97 and I was reluctant to watch it, at first! confused I had to admit, when I returned his VHS, I was totally impressed with the film.

There have been other acting performances I thought were marvelous as well, in many films:

Kirk Douglas in Spartacus(1960)

Katherine Hepburn in The Lion In Winter(1968)

Burt Lancaster in The Birdman Of Alcatraz(1962)

Jack Lemmon in The Apartment(1960) and Days of Wine And Roses(1962)

Gregory Peck in Twelve O'Clock High(1950)

Anthony Hopkins in The Silence Of The Lambs(1991)

Denzel Washington in Glory(1989)

Anthony Hopkins in Remains Of The Day(1993) and Howard's End(1992)

Excellent choices, Lee. Most of my choices I'll try and keep in drama, but a few may stray, as they say.....

James Stewart in, It's A Wonderful Life and Rear Window

Henry Fonda in, 12 Angry Men, Fail Safe and On Golden Pond

Richard Burton in, Where Eagles Dare and The Spy Who Came In From the Cold

Katharine Hepburn in, On Golden Pond, The African Queen and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner[/b]

Sidney Poitier in, To Sir, with Love

Peter Cushing in, Tales From the Crypt, The Hound of the Baskervilles and Island of Terror

Bette Davis in, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, The Nanny and The Anniversary

There are a ton more performances I love and more films for each actor or actress already listed, but these will do, for now. ;)

I really enjoyed Russell Crowe's performance as the "Spaniard" in Gladiator. This was the first film I had ever seen Crowe act in, and his convincing performance made me want to watch Gladiator again and again. I also believe this was probably the film that really rocketed his career into stardom - at least as far as here in the United States.

I like Russell Crowe's performance in Gladiator(2000) as well. A film I believe put this actor "on the map" also was L.A. Confidential(1997), in which Crowe portrayed an honest, but highly volatile cop named Wendell "Bud" White. I also liked Crowe in 1995's Virtuosity opposite Denzel Washington. thumbs up

After watching Crowe in Gladiator, I bactracked to his films "The Insider" and "LA Confidential", both of which I found good acting performances from him as well. I'm not sure how LA confidential flew over the radar with me, but it did as I had never heard of this film until years later. I was a high school senior in 97, so maybe that explains it. cross-eyed

The thing that Russell Crowe has, IMO, are two things that every great actor must have: 1) a strong screen "presence" and 2) the ability to play the protagonist("hero") and the antagonist("villain") equally well. To me all the great actors of our time have these two things going for them. I look forward to buying the DVD 3:10 To Yuma, starring Christian bale and Russell Crowe(who plays the bad guy), on DVD.

I was forced into the theater by my girlfriend to see 3:10 to Yuma after kicking and screaming to go to Resident evil instead. very funny

I went ahead and let her have her way that night, and we ended up watching Yuma, which turned out to be a decent film. The movie was a little slow to me, but I believe it was Crowe's acting that kept this one above water IMO.

More excellent choices, Lee. I'd also add....

Humphrey Bogart in, The Caine Mutiny
James Cagney in, Man of a Thousand Faces
Gregory Peck in, The Omen, more horror, but great performance!
Margaret Rutherford in, ALL the Miss Marple films!
