In May of 1998 Godzilla, the "American" Godzilla film, was released in theatres. Despite the fact this movie made nearly $400 million worldwide in earnings it was(and still is) generally regarded as a "flop" by film critics and widely assailed, even blasted, by the majority of kaiju fans(not all but most I think). It is, I think, an entertaining monster movie, but I do not really consider it a Godzilla movie. Discuss your take on this movie, whether it's good or bad. Talk about the American Godzilla movie here. :)

I personally call this film "Zilla" because that is what the film's creature is called.
Anyway, its an OK film, gets boring at parts.
Definatly the worst film ive ever seen by Emmerich and Devlin, although the only other film that ive seen by them is Independance Day (awesome movie btw)

Well, it is called Godzilla. Zilla is only in GFW.

I prefer to call him GINO. Not to be mean to any of his fans, but just to differentiate him from Zilla and Godzilla.

Eh, OK film. Definately not spectacular in any way other than CGI, but I am a big Mathew Broderick fan.

In what may, or may not, be a testament to this film one of the things I liked most about it, excluding certain scenes, was the French government agent and his ongoing struggle to get a good cup of coffee. I also thought he had a really one good one liner near the end of the film: "...running would be a good idea." crazy

Anyone know how this "Monster Edition" is supposed to be different from the original?

Here's the box art:

So far from what I have read the SE will have: 1. a featurette on the "Best Of Godzilla's battles" 2. possible new audio commentary from cast/directors(?) 3. three(3) more episodes from the animated Godzilla('98) series -I'll probably buy it, being the sucker that I am and because I am a collector

I don't think I could sit through a Devlin/Emmerich commentary on Godzilla without wanting to shoot my TV like Elvis Presley.

That artwork for the new release makes GINO look almost robotic!

I like GINO'S "glowing" eyes. Wish he'd had this feature in the '98 film. Note: www.cinescape.com states that the following extras will be provided with this edition: 1. all time "Best Of Godzilla fight scenes" featurette 2. never before seen Art Gallery 3. three more episodes from the animated Godzilla: The Series 4. photo gallery: Godzilla takes NYC, before and after shots

I liked the actors(and actresses) that appeared in this film-IMO they did absolutely nothing to hold this movie back, but had the opposite effect. Besides Jean Reno as the gruff, croissant-deprived French government agent, I liked many of the other characters: 1. the portly NYC mayor and his sweet-tooth vs his slightly more than inept aide 2. "Animal", the slightly crazy photog(played by Hank Azaria) and his attempts to get Godzilla on tape 3. the ill-tempered General vs his bumbling but hard working Sgt and the same General vs the NYC mayor during the crisis :D

^Agreed. Most of the secondary characters were great, they just weren't very...funny. I gues that's the word. I think the movie tried to pull off the old-style campyness, but failed miserably.
