I just went through my films, and yes you are right. But Eight Legged Freaks wasn't blockbuster Material anyway, so I don't think it counts. |

Ah, Gino. I'll try to do this post without using swear words, which may reveal my thoughts on this movie! I remember being really hyped up just before it came out. I had already been a Godzilla fan for many years and owned about half of the Japanese films up to then. I had enjoyed Stargate and Independence Day despite their many flaws [I now think Stargate is a total waste of a good idea but still enjoy ID4 sometimes as a guilty pleasure], and thought Devlin and Emmerich may make a good American Godzilla film. I hated the new design,but never mind, the film could be good. Exept I LOATHED it. Now it was a long time ago, but I remember thinking the first 20 mins was quite good, then it just became unbearably awful. Maybe as a stand alone monster movie along the lines of The Beast Of 20 000 Fathoms it wasn't too bad, though the script seemed absolutely abysmal,and I remember cringing at some of the things the cast was saying. But as something that was supposed to be a Godzilla film, I couldn't believe what a travesty it was. Obviously I was biased as a Godzilla fan, and maybe it clouded my emotions somewhat. But it was just so awful, and it didn't even make the most of the one area where it may have been able to outdo the Japanese films-the special effects. They seemed really minimal and sometimes very bad. As for Gino, he just had no personality whatsoever. He was just a big CG upright lizard. For some of the film Emmerich seemed to be remaking Jurrasic Park more than anything else,and despite the constant action I was almost bored. It got to what I think was about 10 mins before the end, and I got up and walked out. I couldn't stand it any more! I walked home and watched a couple of the original movies. As I've said before, I know that I was biased. However, I wanted to like the movie and was willing to give it some slack. Since then, there have been occasions that I've thought about revisiting it, and always I decide I don't want to put myself through that hell. My attitude is silly and maybe narrow minded I know, especially as I've enjoyed most of Emmerich's movies since then. Maybe one day, you never know. But it won't be today. Or tomorrow...... |
