Have you seen the script for what was going to be the Jan DeBont directed Godzilla film? I was most impressed with the script, and even more so by Godzilla's design, which was more monster and less lizard. To this day I will never understand what in the hell possessed the Devlin/Emmerich consortium to make G more "an animal" and less monster... -the design for Godzilla's enemy monster, a Gryphon-like kaiju, was hellified, and would no doubt have made a formidable opponent for the Monster King. :D

Agree with it all. The original plot would have made a better film. |

So do I, in a little bit of a different way(I think of this film as more a giant dino movie and not Godzilla). I was diappointed by it after watching it in a theater for the first time, but after watching it a few more times I have come to like it more-not nearly as much as Toho's Godzilla to be sure, but enough. :) |

Zilla is a cool monster and if it weren't named "Godzilla" I think it'd be a decent movie. As a re-make of The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms I think it would work. |

I personally liked this movies a great deal. It's one of the few I own on dvd and went to the theatre to view. I enjoyed the actors as well as the special effects. On another note, though I thoroughly enjoyed and liked the movie, it should have been separated fully from the godzilla name. It was not a godzilla type creature, a virtually indestructable monster; it was more like a huge lizard, and was a little too easy to kill for my taste. Also if they wouldn't have made the inference, many of the true Godzilla fans wouldn't have been so incensed. Still, they did leave an opening for a possible second edition which would be okay by me, but with it not making the $$$$ they wanted, it is not likely in the near future. :( |

Though this movie has been assailed, even blasted by fans and film critics galore, it grossed roughly $400 million dollars worldwide. The film itself was around $100 million to make, and another $25 million was spent advertising it. Like many so called "blockbusters" this movie roared out of the gate, grossing a lot of money the first weekend of it's release-the second weekend, often called the "critical" weekend because it is often a good indicator as to how a film will do overall financially, saw a huge decline in ticket sales for this movie, a telling sign. Part of the contract agreement between Toho and Sony was a stipulation that any sequel must be made within five years of the original film. This deadline came and went in May of 2003, hence if there is ever another American Godzilla movie, it would assuredly have nothing to do with the 1998 film. :) |

I also think the artwork makes GINO look better than he did in the film, which does not say much for G's design now, does it Mr. Devlin?

Indeed. I would have liked to have seen a sequel to the 1998 film, the general consensus being that it would have included an enemy monster for the "surviving" Godzilla to fight. From a business standpoint I can see why a sequel was not made. From what I have read about the financial consequences to various merchandising vendors, theatre chains, and other businesses with a stake in this film's financial bottom line, many were left holding the proverbial bag, especially merchandisers. I believe history is kind to many, many films. Anything like that, sadly, in regards to the American Godzilla movie, will IMO be very grudging at best. |

I forget what movie I was seeing, but I managed to see the T Rex stomped by Godzilla preview once in a theater in Tokyo circa 1997. There was a Japanese mother and son seated behind me, and I could very audibly hear her at the end of the trailer trying to goud her kid into excitement. "Hey hey! It's a new Godzilla!" And the little boy said with confusion, boredom and disgust: "But Godzilla's foot isn't anything like that!" |

I liked the trailer itself, which did a good job of building up the suspense before the foot exploded downwards through the roof of the museum-from the fleeting glimpse of the foot one could deduce that G was going to be big... and look different from Toho's G designs, though at that point I still had no inkling that Godzilla would end up looking like an oversized lizard. ;) |

I would highly recommend checking out the review for this DVD at Scifijapan.com before buying it. Sorry for the double post but this is the best review I have seen of the DVD release, and it merits a mention I think. :) |

After years of rumor and innuendo an American "Godzilla" film was officially released by Tri-Star a few days before the Memorial Day holiday in May of 1998. The film, entitled Godzilla, was produced by Dean Devlin and directed by Roland Emmerich, both of whom had worked together on the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day. The story: a Japanese fishing vessel is damaged at sea and beached. This, coupled with the discovery of giant footprints on an island atoll, lead investigators, military and civilian, to believe that something very large and unusual may be on the loose. Later a pair of fishing trawlers are pulled under the surface of the ocean. Finally, the mysterious beast makes landfall, appearing in perpetually cloudy, rainy New York City. The reptilian giant manages to scare the hell out of a lot of people and cause some damage, though due to it's size and not so much because of it's mood. The creature disappears below ground, is later lured out courtesy of a giant pile of fish and proceeds to fight the local authorities twice. The requisite chaos ensues, including massive property damage, predictable foibles on the part of the civilian and military leaders, and the monster, now referred to as "Godzilla", versus a small flotilla of USN subs in a nearby river. A sequence involving the monster's asexual offspring occurs towards the end of the film. The offspring are contained in Madison Square Garden and subsequently destroyed by aerial attack. Godzilla, emerging from the ruins of the demolished arena, is understandably pissed off at the slaughter of the baby G's, and goes on one last rampage, a chase involving it and a taxicab, before the movie reaches it's conclusion. --------Observations: It is widely known among all Godzilla fans that this film is generally disliked, even hated. Despite the fact the movie grossed around $400 million worldwide in ticket and merchandise sales it was considered a total flop. Opinions of this movie run the gamut, and most of the ones I have seen or heard are entirely negative. I was, admittedly, disappointed by what I saw in the movie theater back in 1998. I expected to see a Godzilla film. What I got was a fairly entertaining giant monster film, that could have easily passed as a remake of The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms(1953). I give credit to Devlin, Emmerich, and all the other people involved in trying to make a legitimate Godzilla film. They tried, and IMO, failed. Post your opinions of this film here. Any comments about the Region 1 DVD also. All replies welcome. :) |
