Having bought a VCR on the cheap($5) this weekend at a nearby yard sale I watched my VHS(widescreen) copy of Godzilla(1998) this afternoon. I was surprised it looked as good as it did. winky

Evan, you do understand that watching any film in "full screen" version and when the film's original aspect ratio is widescreen means you're not seeing the entire image of the movie, right?

That is why I have the DVD also. Though why I got the widescreen DVD is because there was this rumor that it was going out of print and a full screen DVD was going to be made. Though turns out that the next DVD release was actualy little better. I am not going to say the name of the site, but this is something which I regret. Rather have the updated DVD... But meh...

I think it was nice. Even more, just for the record, I think that GFW would have been nice if staged in America, replace the JP Godzilla with GINO and all other kaiju turn into kaiju from the animated series and the Xilians are made into the aliens from the Monster Wars trilogy.

This was posted at Ken Hulsey's blog today, a brief article in which Roland Emmerich goes on record and says he's "proud" of the '98 American Godzilla film: http://robojapan.blogspot.com/2009/08/roland-emmerich-proud-of-godzilla-not.html

I just did something I rarely do: post a comment on robojapan. If he is so proud of it, how come only one film dared advertise a film with "From the Creators of Independence Day and Godzilla"? He should put down GINO more. Maybe kill his career like it needs to be. Help beter film makers get better budgets instead of blowing it on him.

Despite my disdain for Godzilla(1998) as a 'Godzilla" movie(which it really isn't for me) I still find this movie sufficiently entertaining enough that I will buy the Blu-Ray disc when it streets at Best Buy. Hopefully Blu-Ray.com will post some screen shots from this disc(that is if they already haven't). winky

Godzilla (GINO) is entertaining as a movie, even as a monster movie but not as a Godzilla movie. The bad thing is, the first part of the movie actually FEELS like a Godzilla movie. Up until the sequence where he is lured to the fish trap, the movie was a decent Godzilla film. I liked the entrance into New York, it seemed more like the older Godzilla films, the fact that he marched right into the city and actually destroyed buildings and terrorized people. After the fish trap though, he turned into scaredy cat lizard that runs from the military and tunnels underground like Baragon and mates with itself. From there the movie lost its way.
