For years I looked for several movies that rarely, if ever, show up on television anymore(at least down here in the southeastern U.S.). Once I bought a computer and discovered the internet about 11 months ago my search was considerably shortened. One of the films I looked for in countless video stores and national chains(like "Best Buy" and "Circuit City") and found on the internet is Grizzly, released in 1976 to American cinema. The story: campers begin turning up dead in a state park, horribly torn apart and mutilated. The park ranger(played by Christopher George) and his staff soon realize they have a killer grizzly on their hands, and this one ain't Yogi The Bear-it is, based on the analysis of it's footprints left behind, an 18 foot, 2000 lb behemoth and freak of nature. As the body count rises from the grizzly's encounters with unfortunate campers, the embattled park ranger hires an eccentric "tracker"(played by Richard Jaeckel) to help hunt down and kill the rogue grizzly. The ranger, his friend(and helo pliot, played by Andrew Prine), and the tracker make one final foray into the deep woods to find the largest grizzly bear to ever walk the Earth...(no spoilers). I have always liked this movie. It has some genuinely creepy scenes, not to mention gore(one of the camper's is beheaded by the monster grizzly), and a vulnerable, perpetually "teetering-on-the-edge" heroic "good guy" character in the park ranger, played with the necessary(but not excessive) tension and consumption of cigarettes, by Christopher George(of the 60's series The Rat Patrol). This film lacks the grandeur of "Jaws" but is nonetheless, IMO, worth a look, if you are a fan of "giant rogue animal on the loose" cinema as I am. The movie was filmed in south Georgia. This film is available on all Region DVD and Region 1 DVD at Amazon.com. Post your opinions and critiques of this movie right here.

I don't believe I've ever seen this film! I've heard of it, but I'm almost certain I haven't seen it. Sounds like a film that I'd more than likely enjoy and it certainly has a good cast. I saw this was just recently released to DVD, so if I can find it at a good price, I'm sure it will eventually make it's way into my collection. ;) |

I paid about $12.00 + S&H for my DVD of this film. If you look closely at the attached image in the "thread starter" you will see that the grizzly bear is standing on his hind legs(upper left photo) and towers over the helicopter(at the climax of the movie). In the upper right photo the grizzly is in the process of knocking over a 25 ft tall radio tower, occupied(in that scene) by one of the park ranger's "lookouts". I have often wondered also whether this film is available in widescreen-all of the advertised copies of this movie I have seen on the internet are all in full-frame(like mine)... silver surprised |

I see the film was filmed at 2.35:1, so I wonder why there isn't a disc available in widescreen? That's disappointing! <_< |

Indeed. One possible explanation for this is might be that the DVD releasing authority thought the film would be more well-received in full frame by people looking to buy it. I still know many more people that prefer to watch movies in full-frame as opposed to watching them in letterbox(2.35:1) or widescreen(1.85:1) format, and these are individuals that do understand the difference between the two, and still watch 1.33:1. To me this is kind of crazy |

I really prefer films offered in their OAR, I'm also amazed that some people prefer fullscreen. My Dad, a very intelligent man HATES widescreen! :o That just amazes me and there's no arguing with other people about how they're not seeing the full picture, if they're watching a widescreen film in fullscreen. I thought TCM did a wonderful job with explaining widescreen compared to fullscreen and showing how much picture is actually lost. I'll admit, I'm quite ignorant about the aspect ratio differences, but still prefer any film I watch to be in its OAR. |

Indeed. TCM used an excellent film, How The West Was Won(1962), to illustrate the difference between pan'n'scan and widescreen. Director Ron Howard even pitched the virtues of watching movies in widescreen, as did fellow director Martin Scorcese. If two tremendously successful movie directors/producers cannot convince somebody to switch=then IMO nobody can. crazy Topic: this film was directed by William Girdler, who died two years later in 1978, while scouting a location for the shooting of his next film. |

Good luck with ordering this DVD title. I am going to sojourn to Circuit City this weekend(Saturday) to look for the Ultraman BCI DVD and also Grizzly. Hopefully I can find at least one of these-the thought of not finding Grizzly(1976) has often been unbearable but I keep looking. There were some rather grisly( ) and gory encounters between people and the mammoth grizzly bear in Grizzly(1976): you mentioned the little boy(towards the end of the film), but there was also the female camper having her head ripped off. The grizzly also tore the head off of Arthur's(the trapper's) horse.

You'll have to order it online. I would have already but my budget won't allow any more purchases until about two weeks from now. I have pounded pavement looking for this title. So far I have searched for it at: two(2) Walmarts, three(3) Best Buys(they no longer stock it), two(2) Circuit Citys, and one(1) hobby/collectable shop that stocks DVDs. I have also looked for it at two(2) Blockbusters. Result: not found. very angry |

I read some interesting trivia about Grizzly(1976): -the role of ranger "Michael Kelly" was originally offered to Clint Walker, who instead opted to play the sheriff in a made-for-TV movie that aired on NBC in 1977 called Snowbeast. Walker did star, of course, in a "bear" movie ten years before, in Night Of The Grizzly(1966). -the same bear used for the stunts and other action sequences in Grizzly also was used in a film made the following year, in 1977, called Day of The Animals. Christopher George, who played ranger "Mike Kelly" in Grizzly, also starred in Day of The Animals, and Richard Jaeckel also starred in both films. -the bear used in both films was nicknamed "Teddy" and stood 11 feet high on it's hind legs, weighing over 1000 lbs. Actors and other staff tasked with making Grizzly were protected from the trained, but untamed bear by thin green, and electrically charged, wires that were placed throughout various "location" shoots. -Grizzly(1976) was the highest grossing independent film of 1976, taking in over $39 million at the box office. It would hold the record for indy film box office receipts until 1978, when Halloween grossed even more $ in theaters. |

That bit of info actually surprised me a bit. Not that the film is poor, but I didn't expect it to be so big......probably helped that a year earlier, folks were scared to death by another beastie of nature gone wild.....Jaws. I have, Grizzly, but still haven't gotten, Day of the Animals and I really want that, Leslie Nielson's acting in, DotA is so over-the-top, I just love it. :<!--emo&lol:--> |

The common complaint I see in internet reviews of Grizzly(1976), and warranted I think, is the accusation that this 1976 film is simply a ripoff of 1975's Jaws, which I happen to agree with. Doesn't mean, IMO, that it can't be modestly entertaining, which is what I believe the film Grizzly is: nothing more and nothing less. I bought this movie on DVD, the 2-disc "Shriek Show" release, for reasons of nostalgia...and I admit partly out of fear it would soon be OOP. I also read in the IMDB "trivia" footnotes of Grizzly that execs from Warner Brothers, a studio interested at the time(1975) in funding the making of Grizzly, were very angry that Film Ventures International(FVI) beat them to the punch, so to speak, securing the rights to making the movie. Just out of curiosity, Kimi, is your DVD copy of Grizzly the 2 disc'er from Shriek Show(Mediablasters)?
