For years I looked for several movies that rarely, if ever, show up on television anymore(at least down here in the southeastern U.S.). Once I bought a computer and discovered the internet about 11 months ago my search was considerably shortened. One of the films I looked for in countless video stores and national chains(like "Best Buy" and "Circuit City") and found on the internet is Grizzly, released in 1976 to American cinema. The story: campers begin turning up dead in a state park, horribly torn apart and mutilated. The park ranger(played by Christopher George) and his staff soon realize they have a killer grizzly on their hands, and this one ain't Yogi The Bear-it is, based on the analysis of it's footprints left behind, an 18 foot, 2000 lb behemoth and freak of nature. As the body count rises from the grizzly's encounters with unfortunate campers, the embattled park ranger hires an eccentric "tracker"(played by Richard Jaeckel) to help hunt down and kill the rogue grizzly. The ranger, his friend(and helo pliot, played by Andrew Prine), and the tracker make one final foray into the deep woods to find the largest grizzly bear to ever walk the Earth...(no spoilers). I have always liked this movie. It has some genuinely creepy scenes, not to mention gore(one of the camper's is beheaded by the monster grizzly), and a vulnerable, perpetually "teetering-on-the-edge" heroic "good guy" character in the park ranger, played with the necessary(but not excessive) tension and consumption of cigarettes, by Christopher George(of the 60's series The Rat Patrol). This film lacks the grandeur of "Jaws" but is nonetheless, IMO, worth a look, if you are a fan of "giant rogue animal on the loose" cinema as I am. The movie was filmed in south Georgia. This film is available on all Region DVD and Region 1 DVD at Amazon.com. Post your opinions and critiques of this movie right here.

Yes, Lee, I also managed to get the two-disc copy.

thumbs up
After I ordered(online) and received my 2-disc'er of Grizzly(1976) from Xploited Cinema I mailed my full framed DVD-R of this film to one of my best friends, who is also about my age. He told me after watching it that it brought back memories-he said he first saw it as a 14 year old at an outdoor drive in theater. Mr Green

There's only drive-in theater I know of remaining in the metro Atlanta area-the "Starlight Drive-In"-it's about 35 years old(or maybe a little older) and is located southwest of downtown Atlanta. I've never been to any drive-in, believe it or not. freak out

Another bit of trivia I never knew about Grizzly(1976): the film's producer, David Sheldon, wanted to make a sequel in 1983, called Grizzly 2: The Predator, which was to have purportedly starred George Clooney and Charlie Sheen, but it was never made.

Hmmm...that is an interesting bit of info. I wonder what direction the film would have taken.....more of a teen-age spin, as Clooney and Sheen wouldn't have been too far out of their teens in '83.

No doubt the special effects in Grizzly(1976) leave a lot to be desired. This film is one of those movies that cannot in any way be taken seriously: that's the best way to watch this film. winky

Bonus:

I think Grizzly(1976) is a film that's ripe for a remake.

Here's a website dedicated to (the late) William Girdler, director of Grizzly(1976) and other films: http://www.williamgirdler.com

Here's a very good German trailer for Grizzly(1976):

I would be delighted to see this film remade with updated special effects. The effects used in the '76 movie are, with no disrespect to the late William Girdler, director of the film, not very good. The film benefited IMO most from the better than average performances of veteran actors Christopher George, Richard Jaeckel and Andrew Prine. The cinematography was also decent(the film was shot in Georgia) and the score amplified the death scenes fairly well.

A quality remake of this movie could become a fan favorite and do well at the box office...but sadly the only monster sized bear films we're likely to get is the various low budget celluloid that airs on SyFy.

Seems like it took forever for this film to get an official DVD release but it finally did about five years ago. I bought the Region 1 Shriek Show release. Here it is for sale at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Grizzly-Christopher-George/dp/B000CSTKDI/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1306385470&sr=1-1

This DVD release is already OOP.

Ever notice that during the final scene after they overkill the bear that the scene showing another bear at the end was cut wonder if had anything to do with that turkey of a sequel that thankfully never saw the light of day.

If I recall correctly "Grizzly" director William Girdler died while scouting out potential locations on which to begin shooting the sequel to the '76 movie.

I have often wondered if a quality remake of Grizzly(1976) could be made. There has been at least one "monster sized bear on the loose" film made which has aired on SyFy called "Grizzly Park". I didn't like the trailer for it much though I haven't seen the movie itself.

The trailer for Grizzly Park(2008):
