On March 21, 1974 the Toho Eizo Company released Gojira Tai Mekagojira, aka Godzilla Vs The Cosmic Monster. This film was released in the U.S. in March, 1977. In this film we are introduced to a character that is widely considered the most powerful Godzilla foe in all of Godzilla's fim history: his robot double. The story: a very old "end-of-the world" foretelling, written on the wall of a cave in Okinawa, seemingly comes true when an unusually malevolent Godzilla emerges from the ground and begins an immediate rampage of mainland Japan. The monster Angilas, sensing that something is not quite right with his kaiju "counterpart" Godzilla, also emerges from the strata and immediately does battle with his supposed "friend". Angilas, severely wounded in his fight with 'Godzilla' retreats back under the ground. Later, this evil Godzilla is confronted by the real Godzilla, who blasts off the skin of his lookalike enemy to reveal a robot made in his own image. A brief but intense fight ensues, Godzilla wounded and escaping into the nearby ocean, "Mechagodzilla", as we discover the instrument by which a race of simian-looking aliens hope to use to conquer Earth, damaged and forced to return to the alien's subterranean base for repairs. Meanwhile, an Okinawan royal family revives a guardian monster named King Seesar, who, as the prophecy foretells, fights alongside Godzilla, together fighting Mechagodzilla at the film's climax(no spoilers). Observations: this is easily my favorite of the 70's Godzilla films. The score is catchy, the pyrotechnics from the battles terrific(as usual) from special effects director Teruyoshi Nakano. The battle scenes are well-rendered and fun to watch. The villains in this movie are truly bad, especially their leader, a cruel and sadistic jackass, very easy to despise. Mechagodzilla's arsenal of weapons is awesome, and the new powers Godzilla displays(e.g. magnetizing his own body) are interesting. Their are always flaws, to be sure. For me there are none that IMO seriously detracted from this film, which is available on Reg 2 and also Reg 1 DVD(Columbia/Tri-Star), in widescreen. Post your opinions and critiques of this movie here, along with anything related. All replies welcome. :)

I've always enjoyed this effort. The imposter Godzilla was quite impressive and as mentioned, the villains were very easy to develop an intense hate for and the score for the film is quite good. The first time I can recall seeing this film was sitting in a hospital bed, watching this on TV and awaiting the removal of tonsils. Godzilla has always made trying times just a bit easier to handle. :)

Good movie. Probably the best of the 70's flicks, in my view. Sato's jazzy score was catchy, the characters were quite good, Mecha-G was a cool new threat, and I liked King Seesar as well. Not bad...not bad at all.

Whoops! I totally forgot to mention King Seesar! I think King Seesar is very neat, just one more reason to enjoy the film. Mr Green

Sato's jazzy score was catchy...

So catchy that part of it made it's way into the Godzilla Final Wars(2004) soundtrack: you can hear it during the scene where the two big guys in the Arctic guardhouse( Ray Sefo and Gary Goodridge, both real life K-1 fighters) are talking-their "office" overlooking Godzilla's icy tomb Mr Green

Yep. I noticed that right away since it's my favorite cue from Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla. Hearing that music in GFW made me laugh.

This was a boost from Godzilla vs Megalon, to me MechaGodzilla is one of Godzilla's best foes.

King Seesar is an ok kaiju and I do like it when his ears flop up.

Anguirus I felt sorry for him, Good thing the real Godzilla came and kicked MechaGodzilla's metallic butt.

The Special Effects are impressive and are perhaps one of the best of the 70's.

Agreed, along with King Ghidorah and Mothra. thumbs up

I liked King Seesar's crystalline eyes, which could reflect back Mechagodzilla's beam attacks. Considering that this was his only real "weapon" I thought King Seesar hung in there fairly well against an opponent with far more firepower to bring to bear in a fight(Mechagodzilla).

So did I. Anguirus always shows no fear and puts up a good fight, which unfortunately for him sometimes results in him getting his behind whipped. tongue-1

Yes, I agree. The Godzilla suit used in Godzilla Vs The Cosmic Monster(1974) is not one of the better "G" suits, in my opinion. It's not the worst either-I would rank it somewhere in the middle. :)

Yes, The Godzilla suti wasn't the best, but King Ceasar was awesome and so was MechaGodzilla. Sato's score was probably the best of the 1970's era of Godzilla movies.

Problem is with the look is before with Megalon and after with Terror, the Godzilla design tooked too.....cute for lack of a better word but I guess by this point it was well established that Godzilla was now a good guy and that wanted his image to reflect that. Either way if the whole hero era was as good as this one I highly doubt people would have hated it so much.

Indeed. My gripe with the suit used in G Vs MG and TOMG was that the head's eyes looked too large. Truth be told the head of this G suit kind of reminded me of a dog.

Agreed though I admit that, from what I've seen at various boards, people seem to either really like this score or strongly dislike it.
