MONSTERLAND FORUMS was created on January 29, 2006 for the purpose of giving fans of giant monster films and other sci-fi/horror movies a friendly online meeting place to discuss all of their favorite films and other things of interest like video gaming and sports. MONSTERLAND FORUMS has 180,000 posts. This online community, while over twelve years old, is currently no longer as active as the early years(between 2007-2009). Still, we have a half dozen members who continue to participate here. For those who enjoy giant monster movies be sure to check out THE MEG, opening in theaters on August 10th, 2018. This film, based on the 1997 book "Meg", written by Steve Alten, features an enormous, 75 foot long Megalodon shark! Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. In these movies, 250 foot tall robots defend Earth from an assault of other worldly giant monsters(kaiju). -Lee "Packmule" Merritt site founder |

Why be sore at me for having these books? Steve Ryfle's book isn't that hard to find, nor is August Ragone's book either. Amazon should carry both. Book stores as well, I would think. The exception of course is Ed G's book. I hear that one's very hard to find...but a guy like you, whose a hound dog at sniffing out and finding these Godzilla collectibles, should eventually be able to find Ed's book, right? |

You'll forgive me for saying so but I honestly do not understand why you, or any young person, would be upset about anything Godzilla related. This monster is a fictitious character in a series of films. Is it really worth getting fired up about? Topic, or at least an attempt to talk about the topic: anyone else around here notice the absolutely vibrant colors on display when watching the Sony R1 DVD of Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla(1974)? |

I do not own thoes books... I now come to think,"If I made the disicion to go with Goji my whole life what I could have done..." anyway yes, I noticed. And I liked it. But there is still that little minor cropping problem with the Japanese dvd having beter frame size showing more of the frame... But I love it, beter than my Anchor Bay VHS, but I keep it for nestalgia and the non copyrighted marked title card... |

Are you saying the aspect ratio is different between Sony's R1 DVD and the Toho R2 DVD? This film's original aspect ratio is, if I'm not mistaken, 2:35.1. |

What's the name of the actress who sings that song. I have the soundtrack to Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla (1974), She has 2 different versions of this song and a track called "Get MechaGodzilla!", which is the MechaGodzilla vs Anguirius music with words to it. Very amusing |

Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla(1974) - Revisited It was during the early and mid 1970's that my great fondness for Godzilla films really began to take hold, no doubt aided by my frustration at catching these Godzilla movies on television. Back in those days there were no DVD players and the VHS player wasn't part of the household(yet). A cover of the magazine Famous Monsters Of Filmland(created so long ago by the late Forrest J. Ackerman), which featured a film called Godzilla Vs The Bionic Monster, really got me fired up about Godzilla. Decades later, and with the film now known by other titles, the DVD of this film is still a delight for me twice a year. I'm referring to Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla, known by its American title of "Godzilla Vs The Cosmic Monster", the movie originally released to theaters in Japan back in March, 1974 and reaching American audiences three years later. Observations, as always both positive and negative, about this film, directed by Jun Fukuda and produced by Tomoyuki Tanaka - Thumbs up: 1. Masaaki Daimon's performance as "Keisuke Shimizu". My first reaction after watching Daimon at work in this movie was not a generally good one but has improved with the passage of time. Shimizu never puts any moves on his lovely co-star Reiko Tajima(who plays "Saeko Kaneshiro") and gets jacked up and thrown around by the same black hole alien( a rugged looking fellow) in two separate scuffles. That said Shimizu still gave his all in both fights and seemed to improve at the fisticuffs the second time around. 2. Reiko Tajima's attire(including her hat) during the sequences on the cruise ship: man, I love the look of a woman in knee high boots. ![]() 3. the battle between Godzilla and MG at the oil refinery: loud, filled with explosions and other pyrotechnics and an effectively rendered first battle between Godzilla and what will become arguably his most powerful adversary. 4. the power of Godzilla to harness lightning, and the accompanying electrical discharges, in order to afford himself the ability to magnetize his body. Against an enemy as powerful and loaded for bear as Mechagodzilla, Godzilla needed an extra power and this one sure comes in handy for the monster king in the final battle against MG 5. the overall pyrotechnic effects in the movie. Teruyoshi Nakano, the SPFX director for the '74 G film, doesn't disappoint here. If you like blasts and explosions in a kaiju film you'll definitely like Nakano's efforts in this movie. 6. "Nanbara", the interpol agent(played by Shin Kishida). Nanbara comes across to me as a kind of Interpol "James Bond", a cigarette smoking, wry witted and self confident guy whose actions(mostly gun play and fighting) are always timely. 7. the score, courtesy of Masaru Sato. I've seen message board content from those who dislike the score, to the point of outright blasting Sato's work. Will this score overwhelm anybody? No. The music in Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla, like the film itself, takes on a personality of its own. I think the two go together fairly well. The score does seem, at times, kind of quirky. 8. the appearances of Angilas in this film: this monster's role in the movie helps establish the feeling of dread and his encounter with MG, and resulting bloody injury at the cyborg monster's hands, readily establishes MG in the role of antagonist. 9. the rendering of the black hole aliens: I for one welcomed the real appearance of these aliens, which was ape like and simian. Gorillas and other large primates have often been portrayed as antagonists in horror films and the black hole aliens certainly look the part in this movie. Thumbs down: 1. the Azumi royal family high priest. His generally sullen and hostile disposition, accompanied at times by whining and loud, simpering scofflaws, would suggest he's in need of a vacation from his priestly duties...or he's in need of a bottle of Ex Lax. 2. many of the monster battles could have benefited from more high speed filming, which seemed lacking in these sequences. 3. the limited use of "split screens" in this film seemed a little out of place. 4. as imposing as the black hole aliens look, in their simian like form, they seem to be lacking in the most basic of close in fighting skills, as they are easily jacked up and thrown about by both Nanbara and Shimizu near the conclusion of the movie and inside the alien's underground base, the two human protagonists effectively making the black hole alien henchmen look like pansies. My rating overall for this film: 8/10 A trailer: |

Here is my review of the fanfilm, as posted from kaijuphile: "Just got around to watching it. So here it is: Pros: -Actualy having an actor do stuff is prety good since we do not get much of that except from Deadzilla -The digital animation looks good -sound edtiting seems good -For the most part, the kaiju action seemed solid. -Cute ending... Cons -Having an actor backfired alittle bit. With the first three minutes, with a dark voice and opening theme to G84 playing, I was hoping for a serious film. Saddly the actor's character tries to interject comedy into the story. Not to mention that he talks too much. I did not find this to my liking. -Maybe you were low on resources, but using Spacegodzilla themes for Mothra is just, odd. -The direction of the kaiju action is good overall, but saddly there was no stop motion animation, which would have allowed a better varriety of shots of the kaiju I give the film a 7/10." |
