Post what you have just watched on DVD here. It can be something you just bought, or something currently in your collection that you pulled off the shelf to watch again(or for the first time ). Feel free to discuss your impressions of what you have watched. Any kind of DVD-a full length feature film, animation, a TV series episode, or even a DVD "extra". Talk about it here. Also post recommendations if you like(thumbs up or thumbs down). All replies welcome. Thread starter: I just bought and watched Domino(2005) on DVD last night. Directed by Tony Scott(The Last Boy Scout-1991), the movie roughly chronicles the life of female bounty hunter Domino Harvey, played by gorgeous Keira Knightley ( Bend It Like Beckham and King Arthur). Co-stars Mickey Rourke as "Ed", her mentor, and Edgar Ramirez as Choco, another bounty hunter with a psychotic edge. The story of the movie involves a fake drivers license scam and the mob. The movie's characters are all quirky and the violence is often sudden and very over-the-top. I bought this DVD mostly out of curiosity. For those who like action, violence and some crude humor this movie might be worth a look. As a purchase I would suggest buying it used(for $9.99), like I did. Here's the site for this film: Domino(2005) |

I just watched, Wolf Creek, it was a rental from NetFlix and I actually enjoyed the film. It claims to be based on true events which makes it all that much creepier, if that's the case. The story is about two British women who are on holiday in Australia and befriend a local. The three pool their cash and purchase a vehicle to head into the outback to go to Wolf Creek Crater Park and check out the crater and surrounding area. They find their vehicle is dead upon their return from the hike to the crater and a local shows up that night and offers to help repair their vehicle, but they and the vehicle will have to be towed back to his place. The following events will have you seriously reconsidering accepting any kindness from any stranger! |

The Abominable Snowman-I had to watch this wonderful Hammer effort after packmule discussed the film. I'm always up for a Hammer film and this film is one of Hammer's strongest early efforts, in my opinion. Everything 'clicks' in this film and makes for a great viewing experience. Where Eagles Dare-I adore this film, I believe one of the bits that's used to describe this film.....'One of the greatest WWII films that never really took place.'. The scenery is gorgeous, the acting is excellent and plenty of great action and suspense to keep you glued to your seat. The Giant Claw-OK, so it may be one of the all-time worse films ever made, but I still love it. Mr Green No amount of arguing as to why I shouldn't like this film has ever been able to sway my opnion of the film. I guess it is perhaps one of those films that's so bad, it's good. I really don't have to make an effort to sit down and enjoy this film. OK, I have been told on more than one occasion that all my taste must be in my mouth, given the kind of films I enjoy, but I don't care. |

I just watched The Defender(1994), a Jet Li feature in which he plays an elite Chinese Army commando and member of an elite unit known as Defenders-his latest assignment: he is hired as a bodyguard for the girlfriend(gorgeous Kristie Chung ) of a powerful and wealthy Hong Kong telecommunications magnate. While protecting her from various and sundry assassins(shooting and/or beating the hell out of them all), John Chang(Jet Li) begins to fall in love with the beauty he has been assigned to protect. During one attack on the beauty, Chang kills the brother of an infamous assassin. That assassin, of course well-trained in the martial arts and a bad-ass in his own right, seeks revenge against Chang, and a climactic battle takes places in the large villa where Chang has his assignment hidden. -----Observations: a typical Jet Li feature-lots of action, violence and shootouts. The dubbing was mediocre at best, and rather poor at worst. Not as good as Black Mask(1996),Kiss Of The Dragon(2001), or The One(2002), but still worth a look. I bought it used for around $9.99. Would make a nice rental IMO. The film is in widescreen(1.85:1) and has scene selection and subtitles on/off but no extras.

The Deadly Bees-I love this Amicus film, not a particularly strong story, but a fun film, nonetheless. Ray Harryhausen: The Early Years Collection-I love this two-disc set, especially the Mother Goose/Fairy Tales, just a lot of fun and the man never ceases to amaze me and this collection really covers the master's career. Space: 1999-Bringers of Wonder-A two-part episode from the classic Gerry/Sylvia Anderson live-action series. Great episode and fun to watch. |

I bought Hostel(Unrated cut)(2006) today and watched it. As advertised it is pretty intense and has some scenes of graphic violence, extreme gore, brutal torture and an abundance of disturbing images. The story revolves around two young American backpackers who start out on a carefree odyssey in Eastern Europe, smoking weed and having carnal relations with various members of the fairer sex-their trip takes a turn for the worse when they are lured into a facility that houses an underground business specializing in torture/murder for profit.(no spoilers). Interesting film. If you are a fan of slasher horror this one is a keeper(buy it) like I did. For casual fans of this genre it would make a good rental or purchased used(at a discount). The DVD has plenty of extras-Previews(trailers of other films), several great director and producer audio commentaries, a short featurette on the "making-of" this movie, and scene selection. It has English and French subtitles, is in anamorphic widescreen(2.35:1) and in 5.1 audio. What sold me on buying this DVD was the website of the movie: Hostel |

Planet of the Apes ('68)-Still one of my all-time favorite films. I can remember the first time I saw this film and the ending....I couldn't have been more than 8 or 9 and I watched it on TV with my Dad and I knew this film was something special. I believe CBS used to show the POTA series of films on a somewhat regular basis. The Poseidon Adventure-I saw this as a 7 year old at the Drive-In and loved it. Shelley Winters played my favorite character, Mrs Rosen and I hid in the back seat and sobbed my eyes out following a couple of scenes. It remains a favorite of mine that I watch several times a year. While I'm usually rather sour on remakes, I must admit to being slightly curious about this remake that's coming out on 12 May....Poseidon. I purchased, Hostel as a blind buy, just because I've heard so much about it and it does sound rather interesting....guess I'll watch that, this afternoon and see how I feel about it. |

Planet Of The Apes is a marvelous film. I have the entire Planet Of The Apes Box Set(includes the five films and a sixth DVD with the late Roddy McDowall hosting a documentary about the entire series). It is my favorite DVD Box Set. The Poseidon Adventure is also great. My father took me to see it in the theater(1972, I was 10 years old). It remains a classic disaster film. I have seen the Preview video clips of it's remake, called Poseidon. It looks good. I notice that in this updated version the tsunami(tidal wave) actually strikes the ship itself. Recall that in the 1972 film the wave crested and crashed down in front of the ship, the wave's tremendous rolling "splash" swamping the top-heavy sea-going liner. While in the U.S. Navy I once did an extended written report and brief on tsunamis, often referred to as tidal waves, even though these underwater earthquake/landslide-generated waves have nothing to do with the tides. I watched the 1972 film and noticed that the "splash" towered over the liner-the wave was advertised as 90 feet tall in the movie trailers but, factoring in the maximum height of the ship's superstructure(and primary radar mast) I believe the wave in The Poseidon Adventure was probably more in the vicinity of 140-150 feet in height. The wave in the remake is advertised as "over 100 feet" in height-a satisfactory description to be sure. It appears to be around 125-130 feet high, definitely not something to be surfed . About Hostel(2006), I would be interested in your comments about this film. eyebrow |

I saw The Poseidon Adventure on AMC a few years back and I was really into it. Hollywood is really out of ideas as this is a film that needs no remake. I'll have to check out Hostel, Lee. After hearing you and China going on about it I have to see what all the fuss is about. |

I thought Charmane's summary of her own thoughts about this film were very astute. There are many films about that emphazise blood and gore, and while Hostel certainly has it's fair share of both there is, as "Madame X" pointed out, other forces at work in this film, which she touched based on, including I think, racism(European pre-conceptions about Americans, aided no doubt by the pot smoking, carefree young backpackers in the film). I bought this film out of curiosity Dan. I also like slasher horror and films like them, so I was fairly confident I would enjoy the film, from it's entertainment value, and nothing more. I would recommend renting it first, if you are not sure whether you would like it or not. I'll say this: after watching this film you may never look at your local grocery store's butcher shop the same again.

I just watched The Curse Of The Werewolf(1961) a Hammer Studios horror classic. Set in Spain, the story revolves around the unfortunate heredity of a young Spaniard(played by Oliver Reed). Reed's dormant lycanthropic genes begin to stir from dormancy. After he moves away and begins his first real job in a village, it isn't long before the moon is full...(no spoilers). Oliver Reed is, IMO, very good at playing the sympathetic character of the man who would be werewolf. As usual, the backgrounds for this film(as with all "Hammer" films) lend realism to the film, and the assortment of characters in this movie, good, bad, and somewhat bizarre, make nice additions to the central storyline of a good man with a very bad curse. This film makes my "Top five werewolf films". The movie is part of The Hammer Horror Series 2-disc set, with eight classic Hammer horror films. thumbs up Pictured: image of the DVD cover for "The Hammer Horror Series" |

I just watched three recent DVD purchases, neither of which I would recommend as a purchase(unless in a used bin at Blockbuster). The first: Bloodrayne(2006), starring Michael Madsen, Michelle Rodriquez, Ben Kingsley, and Kristanna Loken(looking gorgeous ) as "Rayne", the dhampir(half-human/half vampire). The movie is directed by Uwe Boll, who is generally regarded with great disdain among the more serious and hardcore fans of horror. After watching this film I can see why . The acting is wooden, the sets looked fabricated and hardly authentic(the movie supposedly takes place in the 18th century), and the gore is excessive, almost emphasized by Boll, who has been blasted by film critics for his films. There are some good combat scenes, to be sure, and the makeup effects are okay at times. This film is worth a Netflix or Blockbuster Online queue, I think, but not much else. The second: High Tension-an intense foreign horror film(French), that can be viewed either in subtitles or in English(dubbed) This film has plenty of over-the-top gore, but also plenty of suspense and dread, generated from the bad guy. Speaking of the bad guy, there's a major plot twist that blew my doors off :ph43r: For any fan of horror I recommend this one. Much better, IMO, than Hostel. The third: A Sound Of Thunder-based on the Ray Bradbury short story, this film is a tale set in 2055 where time travel is possible, and harnessed by one company, Time Safari, in order to allow people to travel back in time to kill an allosaurus. There are rules in place for our time travellers in this film-when one of them is broken time is thrown out of whack and suddenly carnivorous plants and dino descendants(part dino, part baboon, total bad dispositions) are running loose, preying on the citizenry. (no spoilers) The CGI is, IMO, subpar in this film. The acting is adequate. Again, would make a good rental I think. The film has it's moments, there just aren't enough of them. From what I have heard this movie absolutely bombed at the box office. After watching it I can see why. dead Bloodrayne movie review and trailer |

I haven't been watching many films of late, because of problems with my computer and that had me all upset, so DVD watching took a back seat for a while, but here are some recent views..... Masters of Horror: Chocolate-A solid enough entry in the series and while definitely not what I would consider a horror episode, it had a few tense moments as well as a shower scene that had me laugh out loud. Masters of Horror:Incident On and Off A Mountain Road-I thought this was a very good entry to the series and boasted it's fair share of tense moments and definitely leaned more towards horror! The Longest Day-Just upgraded to the new 2-disc SE and this is a great 'little' film. I have heard some people say that there is far too much star-power in this film....a cast that includes; John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Eddie Albert, Red Buttons, Richard Burton, Sean Connery, Roddy McDowall....well, you get the idea! A huge cast, but very well done and a have a soft spot for the film, as I can remember sitting and watching it with my Dad and he gave me his copy of the book to read, too. The bonus features are plenty and pretty good, but one minor quibble might be that it seems some of the participants of the film were interviewed and those interviews were used for a few of the featurettes. Rawhead Rex-I read the short story by Clive Barker before ever seeing the film and while the film may pale slightly when compared to the short story, the film is still pretty enjoyable to me. I believe this was available on Region 1 DVD, but think it may be long OOP, so I eBayed my Region 2 copy a few years back. |

Sounds like you watch your DVDs on your computer... question or do you still watch them mostly with a TV/DVD player arrangement? :) Re: The Longest Day(1962)-I have the DVD of this film. Though very long it is a great epic. I read that Sean Connery got pissed about his compensation for appearing in this movie, as opposed to other actors blah blah Re: Rawhead Rex-I'll probably try to get this movie as a DVD-R from one of my sources. Truly a hellified-looking creature, akin to some of the monstrosities running around loose in the Hellraiser films. I sure would hate to have Clive Barker's bad dreams :ph43r: Latest DVD I have watched: The Guns Of Navarone(1961), nominated for an Academy award for Best Picture in 1961. Starring Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, Gia Scala, and David Niven. Presented in 5.1 audio or 2.0 stereo and in 2.35:1 letterbox. Directed by Carl Foreman, based on a book by Alistair MacLean. I enjoyed this movie. I saw bits and pieces of it many years ago on TCM, but never in it's entireity, until this past Memorial Day weekend. A marvelous film. I also watched(again) my DVD of Where Eagles Dare(1969), starring Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. The background visuals are stunning(the snow-covered mountains of Bavaria). I also ejoyed the ladies present in the film-lovely Mary Ure and Ingrid Pitt

Oh, I use my TV and DVD players to watch my films as a rule, but the computer problems took so much time trying to figure out that any DVD viewing was taking a back seat. Things have been so crazy here, anyway, I still have little time to watch much of anything, but here are a few recent viewings I've had.... Rat Patrol-Grabbed the first season of this classic TV series on DVD and I've been enjoying the episodes. I actually purchased this set as a 'blind-buy', but the cast certainly is strong and being just a half-hour format really forces the episodes to pack a lot of punch in a short amount of time, so thumbs up so far! Poseidon-Actually went to the theatre to see this update/remake and while it wasn't a horrible effort, it lacked a lot of the human interest of the original film. You really got to know very little about the main cast of characters, which is a shame, but some of the action sequences were quite good and the CGI effects weren't overdone and those used were OK. Decent popcorn film, IMO. Brides of Dracula-An excellent film from Hammer Studios and easily one of my many favorites from the studio. Peter Cushing is always in top form in any film, but really shines in this film as Van Helsing. I love the look of this film, saturated with deep and vibrant colors, a most interesting story line and some eerie scenes make this a must-see, IMO. Day of the dead-The third film in the Romero trilogy and actually, I have a lot of fun with this film. Certainly has it's fair share of gore and not a bad effort, for my money. |
