Latest DVD purchased and watched: Munich(2005), starring Eric Bana, and directed by Steven Spielberg. Comments: Based on the positive review I got from a friend of mine, I bought this DVD, and I was most impressed. The film garnered five(5) Academy Award nominations. The film's story is based on true events. The Israeli government, in response to the kidnapping and murder of eleven Israeli athletes during the 1972 Olympics in Munich, West Germany, assemble a secret squad whose mission is to hunt down and kill those who masterminded the massacre. The team is lead by Avner(played by Eric Bana). This film has masterful acting, top notch(on location) sets, plenty of action(shootouts and explosions), and also brings to the surface effectively, I think, the wear and tear, both physical and psychological, that the members of this secret Israeli squad suffer, not to mention that as they exterminate their human targets, they also become the hunted. A superlative film, which I have come to expect from anything directed by Mr. Spielberg. If you are a fan of suspense/thrillers with action thrown in for good measure then this movie is for you. The DVD comes with nice extras and is presented in anamorphic widescreen(2.35:1 aspect ratio) and has 5.1 audio and subtitle options. Highly recommended! thumbs up |

Just watched the upcoming DVD releases from Dark Sky Films... And Now the Screaming Starts!--A fun little film that's part of the Amicus Collection and boy, does this disc look heaps better than the original Region 1 release from Image. A much sharper picture with some sweet bonus features. The Beast Must Die--Another film from Amicus and I don't care what anyone says, I find the 'Werewolf Break' to be fun and a definite throwback to the William Castle films of the 50s/60s. Again, Dark Sky Films has done a dandy job with the transfer and more nice bonus features. Asylum--The final film in the Amicus Collection from Dark Sky Films and probably my favorite of the three releases, although all three are great fun. I love this anthology and there are some solid stories to make the film up and again, sharp looking transfer and nice bonus features, too! |

Two stellar Hammer films: Quatermass 2(1957) and Quatermass And The Pit(1967). The two movies are packaged together as a set. In the 1957 film Quatermass is portrayed by Brian Donlevy-if his name sounds familiar it might be because he starred in the Americanized version of the original Gamera movie, called Gammera The Invincible. In the 1967 film Professor Quatermass is played by Andrew Keir. Both movies are great fun and highly entertaining, which I have come to expect from just about all Hammer produced films. These two are "keepers", if you are a fan of classic, suspenseful and well-acted sci-fi/horror. thumbs up |

The two most recent purchased DVDs I have watched: 1. Underworld: Evolution(2005)-a decent sequel to Underworld. The werewolves are more wolf-like and Markus, the lone vampire elder, is a truly bad-ass vampire. The same can be said for his twin brother, William, who is the oldest, and most powerful "lycan"(werewolf). Lots of action, shootouts, vampire vs werewolf battles. Selene(played by Kate Beckinsale) and Michael Corvinus(the half vampire/half lycan hybrid) get to strut their stuff more in this feature, particularly Michael. The ending leaves it open for a third installment, though I'm not sure where the execs at Sony(Screen Gems) could go, storywise, with a third Underworld film. Overall: if you like Underworld you will definitely like this sequel. thumbs up 2. Ultraviolet(2005)-average at best. Milla Jovovich plays "Violet", a mutant(of sorts) and former human who has declared war on her former kin(all humans) led by a despicable ruler(played by Nick Chinlund). The combat scenes are interesting visually. Milla Jovovich is absolutely interesting visually , a gorgeous, blue-eyed beauty with a lithe figure, ass kicking combat skills and a flat belly I still think about on an almost daily basis. This film is mostly flash and no substance. It did poorly at the box office here in the U.S. Overall: makes a good rental but as a purchase it might be hit or miss.

I just finished watching The Beast Of Bray Road(2005), a straight to video movie that has been appearing on the Sci-Fi Channel. I should have watched it on the Sci-Fi Channel instead of plunking down $12.99 for this used DVD. The movie chronicles the struggles of a sheriff and his deputies in a Wisconsin town that is being plagued by a monster that may, or may not be a werewolf. The production values for this feature are not very good. The acting is fair, and I say this only because of the presence of the cryptozoologist, a jittery but likable fellow who plays off the no-nonsense young sheriff somewhat humorously. The monster is revealed to be, indeed, a lycanthrope, and it preys on the locals, mostly surly, tattooed, horny young twenty-somethings, with a vengeance, people a food source for the ravenous beast. The creature itself is designed fairly well, a hulking, bipedal, yellow-eyed, salivating monster - it is shown in it's entireity far too early in the movie to build up any suspense as to what it looks like. This, IMO, dooms this film to mediocrity, or perhaps less, if you are a tough film critic, which I am not. Overall: on a scale of 1-10(10 being the best) I rate this movie a 6. It's worth a rental if you are a horror buff. As a used DVD purchase? Maybe, although I think what I paid for it should definitely be considered the upper end of the financial investment scale for this otherwise tepid horror movie. |

I just re-watched Titanic on DVD again today. I gotta admit, I'm a sucker for this film. Brings tears to my eyes every time. The music, cinematography, direction, plot, special effects, action. It's got everything. I love it. |

And so are, apparently, a whole lot of other people Dan. This film grossed over one billion dollars at the box office worldwide, and definitely put some major spare change in the pockets of director James Cameron. I have watched this film. I didn't connect with it very much, but nothing against it. Watching this movie it is easy to see the time and energy put into it by the director, the actors, and the effects crew. The sequence where the Titanic gradually sinks after striking the iceberg is truly outstanding. thumbs up |

I went to the theatre to see, Titanic, I took my Mom, my Aunt and cousin and I thought the film was quite good. Then, several months later, I took my Grandmother, cousin and my cousin's friend to the Drive-In to see the film. My Grandmother was interested in seeing the film, because her Aunt knew either John Jacob Astor or a family member of Astor's. I'd say the effects were quite good and it was very neat to see Gloria Stuart, who starred in several of Universal's classic sci-fi/horror films of the 30s, starring as the older Rose in the film. thumbs up |

I bought Dark Sky Films DVD release of Frankenstein Meets The Space Monster(1965) and watched it today. After buying and watching The Flesh Eaters(1964), also released by Dark Sky Films, and being impressed by the cover art, extras, and great letterboxed print of the film, I was pleased to see FMTSM on the rack. The Dark Sky Films release of Frankenstein Meets The Space Monster is very good. The movie is presented in anamorphic widescreen(1.85:1) and Dolby 2.0 mono. The menu includes scene selection and subtitle options. Extras include a photo gallery and the original theatrical trailer for this old, low budget classic. I had never seen the movie's trailer before and it was really good. The print does include some lines, a blemish here and there(nothing major), and I noticed a "twitch" in the picture at the beginning and near the end of the film-I believe they are simply imperfections and flaws-they are minor and will not deter the viewer, IMO, from enjoying this campy old movie. I recommend this one for those hardcore sci-fi and horror fans of the older titles. Casual fans of this genre may not enjoy FMTSM, with it's shaky special effects and generally subpar acting. There is some great stock footage of NASA's rockets, both on the ground and blasting into orbit, along with many great shots of young women in bikinis , and several really catchy 60's tunes. Kimi, you have mentioned wanting to see this one-I think you would like it. The climactic scene with the damaged and disfigured android vs Mull the Space Monster is brief but rendered pretty well, with the android Frank Saunders ably jacking up several of the pointy-eared aliens and holding his own against the hulking, roaring space monster. Give this one a try. thumbs up

I've got, Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster on my wish list and thought for sure I might find the DVD at Borders, on my last visit, but no such luck. :( If I have to, I'll simply order it online and enjoy it that way. Forgot to mention, someone sent me a DVD-R of this a while back and it's definitely......'out there!'. I enjoyed it for what it is, a fun little romp with some wild looking effects and some definite 60s sounding tunes. I like that kind of stuff and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys those 'B' grade films. Anyone else, I'd not hesitate in recommending a rental to! Mr Green |

This sounds like some house parties I have attended .Regarding Frankenstein Meets The Space Monster(1965), I was told by another member at the "Planet X" discussion site that this was actor James Karen's first film. Something of an inauspicious start to be sure, though personally I think Mr. Karen did a serviceable job of acting in this film, as did Lou Cutell, who played the appropriately named Dr. Nadir-his makeup effects were not very good, but his leering grin, quasi-feminine voice and flaky mannerisms made an impression. I suspect the hardest part for actors James Karen and Nancy Marshall(his assistant) were keeping straight faces when speaking their lines . Topic: I just watched Squirm(1976), an MGM release. This campy horror movie describes the events that take place in the seaside community of Fly Creek, GA after a storm knocks down an electrical tower, the fallen power lines sending tens of thousands of volts into the ground. Result: ravenous worms surge up out of the ground, preying on the locals, their travails compounded by the inept sheriff. This film is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen and includes a theatrical trailer. The acting is average, though the collection of quirky characters with loud southern drawls amuses. I bought this DVD used at Blockbuster. Considering it's age I'm sure it could be bought fairly inexpensively online. I recommend this one for the serious fan of campy horror-anyone less rabid about their horror may not connect with this film. eyebrow |

Here's another of those films that freaked me out as a kid! I think giant beasties are often scary to think about, but when the beasties in question are of average size and can be as scary as say, spiders, bees, etc, that freaks me out even more, because who's to say this couldn't really happen!? I thought there was a few very creepy scenes in this film...the Sheriff and his 'squeeze' being caught in the jail cell as well as the worms invading the house at night......I mean, there was billions and billions of worms! Ick! hyper The 70s were full of nature on the rampage films and this is another good example of how most any creepy crawlie could turn agains the human population. |

This afternoon I sat down and watched: The Hills Have Eyes/Unrated--OK, I am usually on my soapbox screaming at the top of my lungs about how remakes are evil and Hollywood needs to come up with new and fresh ideas for films, rather than remaking classic films. Well, this film really impressed me! I'm a fan of the original, but I might admit that some aspects of the remake are slightly better than the original. Yep, that's correct, in my opinion, just ever so slightly better. Obviously, this is a much 'wtter' film than the original...the blood flows quite freely and there are some eye-squinting gore moments, which surprised me. Just an enjoyable film that I wasn't expecting to appreciate at all. Later, this evening, after dinner, we sat down and watched the Russian film, Night Watch. Some impressive visuals from time to time, but I'd almost have to watch the film one more time to truly decide how I feel about this effort. I will say, watching the film in it's original Russian language with English subs is definitely the way to view this film. |

I have been tempted to buy it-I like the cover art. I might pick it up this weekend at Circuit City, that is, if I cannot find the Ultraman BCI DVD. The new Best Buy just two miles from my residence will be opening on August 11. You can be sure I will be there to look for sales on DVDs. thumbs up |

NIGHT WATCH wasn't my cup of tea. It just moved rather slowly to me and I'm just not a fan of the Russian setting. Just seemed too drab for my liking. I couldn't really find any characters I could relate to. |
