Latest DVD watched... Hulk Vs. on Blu-Ray. I love the animation movies that Marvel pumps out. Their latest, Hulk Vs. is very good. It contains two short movies of Hulk vs. Wolverine and Hulk vs. Thor. Lots of action, blood, humor, (provided by Deadpool and Loki) etc. Out of the two though, I enjoyed Hulk vs. Thor the most. I sometimes forget how powerful Thor really is. A must see if you like Marvel Animation.

Several weeks ago, while looking at horror movie trailers on YouTube, a trailer caught my interest and I subsequently found and ordered the DVD of the film from DeepDiscount.com. I'm referring to The Stuff, a horror film produced and directed by Larry Cohen, released to theaters back in 1985 by New World Pictures.

I cannot imagine that anyone, including dedicated fans of horror movies(like myself), would think of The Stuff(1985) as a quality horror film. I can see why this movie would develop its own cult following because it definitely has its moments.

The film's story: an industrial saboteur and former FBI agent(played by a pre "Law And Order" Michael Moriarity), a pre-teen boy and the owner of an advertising firm(played by Andrea Marcovicci) all discover that there's something definitely wrong with the latest craze America has for "The Stuff", a food product that is for sale just about everywhere and is seemingly consumed by just about everyone. "The Stuff", turns out, has a life of its own and is addictive to anyone who eats it. The white, yogurt-like material turns many who eat it into crazed zombies as well. It's up to the small group who know the truth to try and stop the entire American populace from becoming slaves to this edible material.

The cast includes Michael Moriarity as "Rutherford", the saboteur and disgraced former FBI agent, Paul Sorvino as a ridiculously over the top Army colonel who somehow believes "The Stuff" to possibly be some sort of subversion created by communists, and Garrett Morris as a laughable(and not in a good way) former cookie franchise owner looking to get his company back from those he claims "stole" it from him.

The plot is literally all over the place and the acting is stale, save for some funny moments involving the characters. The special effects are mostly predictable and average but there are some scenes of gore and violence to keep most horror movie fans at least somewhat interested: the yogurt like "Stuff" that oozes in and out of its victims, one scene where a "Stuff" infected great dane attacks its owner, and "Rutherford"(Michael Moriarity) punching the various crazed assailants, full of the "Stuff", as well as blasting away at them with various firearms.

Th Stuff is part "The Blob" and part zombie film. Serious fans of horror movies should buy this older title, which retails at DeepDiscount for about $6.00. More casual horror fans may find this title a "miss".

Latest DVD watched by Packmule: Feast III: The Happy Finish(2009). The third installment in the "Feast" films, all directed by John Gulager, son of veteran actor Clu Gulager(who also stars in each of these movies), picks up right where Feast II: Sloppy Seconds leaves off: the motley group of survivors, fighting to stay alive from the raids of the marauding, bloodthirsty humanoid monsters that have invaded their town, continue the struggle. There's not much new in this third "Feast" film: a couple of new characters appear, neither of which ultimately can change the fate of any of the survivors. The dialogue between the human cast remains mostly confined to profanity and other bits of verbatim presumably meant to remind the viewer of this film how much these survivors dislike each other.

The film itself is a bloodbath, even more so than Feast II Sloppy Seconds. Perhaps director John Gulager wanted to try and sicken even the most die hard gory horror movie fans. I doubt he succeeded but, judging by the absolute butchery of humans in this movie, I think it's safe to say it wasn't for lack of effort.

I wouldn't have considered it possible that director John Gulager could outdo himself regarding the gore and carnage in the second "Feast" movie but he did it in Feast III: the movie's gratuitous and over the top gore is steady and unrelenting, the various deaths of the human cast violent, sometimes sudden and always bloody: there are gruesome impalings, dismemberments of limbs, the periodic claw hammer strikes used on the monsters by one of the biker girls, and an abundant amount of sequences in which both victims and monsters are disemboweled, their intestines and other internal organs falling out into plain view. There's also a scene that might bring bile to the viewer's throat: one of the monsters manages to have anal sex with a surviving male cast member, a truly vile scene with an even more repulsive consequence a moment later.

Personally, I like the first "Feast" film the best. The second and third films in this trilogy ramp up the bizarre, campiness and occasional injection of black humor into the story lines, something I can do without. Still, "gorehounds" and other fans of gory horror movies should like Feast III: The Happy Finish just fine.

I've heard that a fourth "Feast" film is in the works. All things considered, and after watching Feast III, I hope it doesn't happen. winky

Latest DVD watched by Packmule: The Day The Earth Stood Still(2008). I'll be the first to admit that I generally have great disdain for remakes of classic horror and sci-fi films. Despite this I decided to buy the DVD of this film because repeated viewings of the movie's trailers piqued my curiosity.

Like other remakes in the genre of horror/sci-fi this film features obviously updated, and at times very cool, special effects.

Thumbs up:

1. While I still prefer the Gort sentinel robot from the 1951 original movie the rendering of "Gort" in the 2008 remake is decent: he's been ramped to about thirty feet in height and looks more humanoid in physique. As with the original Gort the new Gort, challenged by the military, opens up a serious can of whoop ass on the attacking forces.
I just wish there were more sequences of the giant automaton in the remake film.

2. Jennifer Connelly's performance as "Dr. Helen Benson": she was effective as the scientist(and stepmom) working her behind off to show Klaatu that humanity was worth saving.

3. the overall special effects: I wouldn't call them spectacular but they kept my attention for the most part.

4. the "chalkboard" scene between Klaatu and Professor Barnhardt, which was retained in the remake, the two characters throwing up some mind boggingly advanced mathematics on the professor's chalkboard

Thumbs down:

1. Keanu Reeves as "Klaatu": like Michael Rennie's "Klaatu" this interstellar visitor is meant to be deliberate, stoic and without much emotion. Michael Rennie still managed to project curiosity(about humans) and generate a subtle wit and sarcasm about himself, as he temporarily dwelled among humans. Keanu Reeves was okay in his performance, but still came across to me as bland. His performance seemed sterile.

2. the ending, which seemed somewhat abrupt to me.

My rating of the remake: 6.5/10

My rating for the original: 8.5/10

Latest DVD watched by Packmule: Martyrs(2009), a French horror film directed by Pascal Laugier.

I have watched horror movies since I was about fifteen years old and I have never seen such a horror movie that's so grim and utterly depressing yet fascinating to watch at the same time. Martyrs contains graphic violence and gore but both are well placed and plausible within the overall context, and plot, of this relentlessly violent and intense film. This movie, as others who have watched it and reviewed it on the internet have stated, must be "experienced".

I didn't like the ending at all but it made sense, like it or not, again given the overall story line of the film.

I would recommend that any serious fan of horror movies check out Martyrs...as a rental. It might be hit or miss regardless but I believe any fan of horror movies who watches "Martyrs" won't forget it anytime soon.

Borrowed and watched Valkyrie, Bryan Singer film with Tom Cruise, Terence Stamp and the great Kenneth Branagh. I enjoyed this film more than I thought I would. I know a lot of people have trouble with Tom Cruise movies, but I find his acting fine. Mission Impossible III, The Last Samurai and Minority Report are all great movies.

Having watched some of Tom Cruise's early films like Risky Business(1983) and Top Gun(1986) it's very evident to me that he has greatly improved his acting abilities with more experience in front of the camera. I especially like Cruises' performance as Navy JAG officer(and lawyer) Lt. Caffey in A Few Good Men(1992) and as IMF agent Ethan Hunt in the three "Mission Impossible" films. thumbz up

Latest DVD watched by Packmule: Octopus(2000). This film is one of a handful of "giant beast on the loose" movies written by Boaz Davidson. The film is directed by John Eyres and was produced by Trimark Pictures. None of them are really what I would call good movies but they are well paced and have a lot of action and better than average CGI effects.

The monster in Octopus is, of course a gigantic octopus. There's a subplot involving the transportation of a terrorist aboard a U.S. nuclear submarine and while this provides for some mildly entertaining moments the star of this film is the monster sized octopus, which first attacks and cripples the U.S. submarine and then a cruise liner.

This movie has appeared on the Sci-Fi Channel and produced a sequel a year later called "Octopus 2: River Of Fear".

Latest DVD watched by Packmule: Friday The 13th(2009), directed by Marcus Nispel. As remakes of classic slasher horror films go I'd rate this one better than average but perhaps a shade less than "good". The makeup effects and special effects regarding Jason Voorhee's kills are predictably excellent. The acting is, well, predictably average to stale but given this genre of film I don't think anyone in their right mind would expect any Oscars to be awarded to this movie.

As before Jason Voorhees, a hulking, grubby looking and disfigured fellow, goes on a murderous rampage at Camp Crystal Lake. Several sullen locals warn the group of young people, which includes the requisite young and buxom females and beer swilling, marijuana smoking male counterparts, to stay away from the lake and surrounding areas. The group doesn't and quickly become, along with two locals, lambs to the slaughter for Mr. Voorhees who, after a few kills, replaces the burlap bag on his head with a hockey mask. The victims are systemically hacked, impaled or outright butchered by Voorhees.

The kills in this update of the 1980 classic are similar to the original film: impalings, a screwdriver through the neck, an arrow through the skull and other gruesome butchery involving a pick axe and machete, all of which turn the camp into little more than a human stock yard of corpses.

Slasher horror film fans will no doubt like this film but after watching this remake I'm still much more entertained by the original and its two follow ups.
