In 1961 MGM released The Pit And The Pendulum, a film directed and produced by an "up-and-comer" named Roger Corman. The story: Inside a gloomy 16th-century Spanish castle a game of cat-and-mouse is being played out between an adulterous woman and her estranged husband, who also happens to be the son of the Spanish Inquisition's most notorious killers. Already on the brink of a nervous breakdown, the son(played by legendary horror-film actor extraordinaire Vincent Price) is sent over the edge after discovering his wife has "died"(a ruse on her part). Things soon cut to the chase, in a matter of speaking, and one of the Inquisition's most infamous tools of torture and murder, the Pendulum, comes to life once more(no spoilers). -----Observations: this film is a "Midnite Movie" favorite of Packmule. Vincent Price is(predictably) masterful and brings his kaleidoscope of moods and menacing mannerisms to the overall mood of the film, which I would describe as grim. The movie is available on Region 1 DVD and is part of MGM's Midnite Movie series, presented in it's original theatrical format, 2.35:1 letterbox, and includes a few very nice extras-a prologue, audio commentary by Roger Corman, and the original theatrical trailer. For fans of classic horror and have not seen this film I recommend this film highly. Discuss your opinions and observations of this classic horror movie here, and anything(anyone) related. All replies welcome. :)

Excellent....excellent film! As mentioned, Price is fantastic in the role of Don/Sebastian Medina and the always interesting Barbara Steele as his wayword wife. This film has outstanding looking sets and Roger Corman always made any film he sat in the director's chair and enjoyable time for the viewers. As packmule mentioned, the DVD is a very nice disc to have in your collection, as most of the Midnite Movies aren't expensive at all and the commentary track with Corman is an enjoyable track, as well.

One of the great features of the Midnite Movies DVD's are the movie info "bytes" on the covers-among this film's is one in which it states that, in order to make the Pendulum's downward advance(as it swings over it's victim) more menacing, director Roger Corman had every other (film) frame of the "Pendulum" sequences cut out. Very clever I think. thumbs up

Corman certainly knew how to make the most out of what he had to work with. He and Price certainly made a wonderful team and I, too, love those little box bytes on the back of the MM covers! thumbs up

...and the always interesting Barbara Steele as his wayword wife.

After Barbara Shelley, Barbara Steele is my favorite 60's horror film actress. Both women were beautiful in these films, which= for Packmule tongue-1

My favorite Vincent Price Movie. And Also made me aware of Roger Corman and got me reading Edgar Allen Poe. And I'll admit it's for its age, It did freak me out. The Whole Buried Alive thing, And the actual Pendulum room is very errie, and The whole scene is very intense.

What other films have you seen starring Vincent Price?

Topic: I thought the scenes showing the torture chamber were creepy. Trying to imagine what those devices could do to their victims is a little bit unsettling.

House of Wax-Meh
The Fly
Return of the Fly
Tales of Terror
Alittle bit of The Tingler
Vincent-If That counts
Edward Scissorhands-Meh
And of Course The Pit and the Pendulum
When thinking how many movies Price has done, My list is alittle short, But I'm just going by what I've seen.

Topic: Agreed, The Torture Chamber was creepy, But what I found most Unsetteling was the paintings of those shawdow-like Figures on The wall.

There was a pivotal scene in this movie when Nicholas Medina(played by Vincent Price) transformed from tormented victim of his wife's ruse to a maniacal, sadistic fellow hell bent on making her pay for her deception. Only an actor of Vincent Price's talent could pull off this role reversal nearly seamlessly as he did. This scene occurs at about the 1:20 mark of the below trailer:

Barbara Steele played Medina's wife. She was one of my favorite horror movie hotties of the 60's: an absolutely beautiful woman! tongue-1

I can now add The Abominable Dr. Phibes to my list.
