Pollution. A dirty word, literally. Prevailing as a dominant movie theme, one film definitely comes to mind: Godzilla Vs Hedorah(1971), in which Godzilla fights a pollution-spawned monster, set amidst 70's psychadelic rock. Another film also comes to mind, released in 1979 by Paramount Pictures: Prophecy. The story: a tired and borderline burned out innercity physician(played by Robert Foxworth) is asked by a friend to travel to the Maine woods to research the impact of pollution(from a paper mill plant) on the local environment. Accompanied by his wife(played by Talia Shire), the doc begins his "working" vacation. Things sour quickly as the local native-American Indian residents get involved vs the employees of the paper mill company(led by Richard Dysart). In the course of his research the physician discovers all kinds of things unnatural: weird and displaced tree roots, giantism in the local fish population , reported stillborn births among the local female Indian populace, and the discovery of some dead hikers, the latter sure as hell not caused by boredom eyebrow . Turns out there's something prowling the woods and it ain't Smokey The Bear: a towering, hideous, mutated monster that, upon it's full blown arrival into the lives of the physican, his wife, the paper mill boss, local lead Indian, and local sheriff, makes life a living hell for them, as they seek to survive the monster's attacks in the deep woods of Maine(no spoilers).-----Observations: Though this film does not get generally good reviews at most of the movie discussion websites I have visited, I still like it very much. The score is very good, as is the opening sequence. The monster in this film is not revealed too soon, and the necessary suspense is allowed to build. The movie is available on Region 1 DVD. Not the best monster movie you will ever see, to be sure, but one that is, if you have not seen it, worth at least a queue in NETFLIX. Post your takes and critiques of this film here. All replies welcome. :) |

Chalk me up as another fan of this film. I read the book before I saw the film and I believe HBO was my introduction to the film! I think the film has a wonderful cast and there are some genuinely creepy scenes in this film. Especially in the fog when many of the group are attempting to flee the mutated beastie and it suddenly comes up out of the water! I didn't think I'd ever be able to get my hands on this DVD, but was thrilled to find it at, Borders. The film has a bit of a throwback to the 50s or 60s feel to it, as the beastie isn't shown too early in the film and as mentioned, you really wonder what the end result will look like and in my opinion, it's not really a disappointment! |

I have also read the book, which was, IMO, outstanding. I first saw this film in the theater back in the summer of 1979(I was 17) with my father, who also enjoyed a good monster movie now and then. I spent a great deal of time looking for this film( I found it at Tower Records about 3 years ago while browsing), as it does not, even today, make many television appearances. Prophecy has shown up on HBO2 and the Sci-Fi Channel, but more than often than not you will see it appear on AMC, especially their annual Monsterfest weekly marathon of monster movies shown during Halloween week in late October. eyebrow |

I also thought the book was outstanding....I need to do a bit of digging to see if I even own the book, anymore. :( TV appearances of the film are rare and I believe I've seen it, as mentioned, pop up on AMC from time to time. This is one DVD I was thrilled to get my hands on, because it is the type of film that's fun to revisit every now and again. Mr Green |

Indeed. I watch this film 2-3 times a year. Some things I like about this film: 1. The sound effects of the monster-the heavy, ragged breathing, and of course the monster's roar and overall gruesome appearance. One thing I always wondered was what "base" animal it derived from-a bear, or perhaps a wolverine. Regardless, it certainly looked like something from Hell itself :ph43r: 2. Armand Assante-his portrayal of the moody, simmering with anger Indian was very good 3. Robert Foxworth-his portrayal of the tired, disillusioned, and disgusted physican was great-ironically, in his attempt to unwind on his "working" vacation, he runs headlong back into the same bureacracy and stonewalling that he lamented so much about to his friend(in the city), this time not from the landlord of a rat-infested apt. bldg. but from the bureaucracy and indifferent cronyism of an agricultural facility(the paper mill plant) I think, above all, this film proves that a monster movie must have good acting and a plausible storyline in order to have any chance at success thumbs up |
