There have been many on-screen tales of haunted houses in cinematic history, IMO some good and some bad. Among the most notable big-screen haunted houses is the one from The Amityville Horror(1977). Often overlooked, I think, is another very creepy abode, Hill House, and the movie that it "lives" in: The Haunting, released in 1963 by Warner Brothers, directed by Robert Wise and the first screen adaptation of The Legend Of Hill House, written by Shirley Jackson. The film's story: four individuals enter 90 year "Hill House", an enormous(and very gloomy) mansion as part of an experiment to study the effect of the house on the people themselves, including a study of the house's purportedly active supernatural phenomena. To their chagrin they discover that there is something going on inside the empty(or is it?) mansion: slamming doors, eerie and manacing "thumps" behind walls and the loud booms outside doors, as if some huge monstrosity were prowling the large corridors of the place. For one of the members(played by Julie Harris) the entire experience is personal in nature, as she believes the mansion has drawn her to it. (no spoilers). This film is IMO a true chiller and one of the best supernatural horror films ever made. The film was shot in black and white(lending to it's sense of dreariness and dread) and the use of sound and camera angles was masterfully manipulated by director Robert Wise. This movie is available on DVD and had some very nice extras: feature-length audio commentaries by the primary actors of the film and director Robert Wise, a still gallery, a theatrical trailer, scene access and subtitle options. Post your opinions and critiques of this classic horror film here. All replies welcome. :) |

Fantastic film! Definitely one of the best haunted house films in my opinion.....I also love, The Legend of Hell House. The Haunting is so very creepy in subtle ways, but some scenes you never forget. The cast was excellent, the directiing was great and it's just a film that any classic horror fan should see at least once. Much better than the remake, but that's my opinion. |

Indeed. I have seen the remake, a film of the same name, starring, most notably, Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Owen Wilson. The film was released in 1999 and was touted as a special-effects "bonanza". Assuming that's true then I guess I'm still looking for The Ponderosa , because IMO this movie was a convoluted, poorly acted mess, with no disrespect to the beautiful Catherine Zeta-Jones , or marvelous actor Liam Neeson thumbs up . Owen Wilson seemed out of place in a movie like this, the blond actor's mediocre acting skills better suited for raunchy comedies and celluloid garbage like the recent remake of Starsky And Hutch, in which he played opposite Ben Stiller, another Hollywood comedic, and for me, very annoying buffoon. thumbs down

We went to the Drive-In to see the '99 remake of, The Haunting and even viewing the film in the great outdoors didn't help in my enjoyment. I agree, Liam Neeson and Catherine Zeta-Jones did hold their own in the film, it was just too poor of a film to even attempt to hold it's own against the original. |

Indeed, and it only served to reinforce my belief that the masterful use of audio(sounds) and camera angles can be(and more often than not is) more effective at conveying dread, suspense, and outright fear, far more than any CGI effect. In addition to The Haunting, other movies that IMO illustrate this are Citizen Kane(1941), Touch Of Evil(1958), and Psycho(1960). Mr Green |

I think The Haunting is one of the best haunted house films made so far, but I do prefer House on Haunted hill more. |

Is it because Vincent Price is in House On Haunted Hill(1959)?
