Among the plethora of 1950's "giant monster on the loose" movies is It Came From Beneath The Sea, released by Columbia Pictures in 1955, the creature effects courtesy of Ray Harryhausen. The film's story: after his submarine encounters an unknown force beneath the waves, Commander Pete Matthews(played by Kenneth Tobey) teams up with a pair of scientists(Faith Domergue and Donald Curtis) to find out what nearly sank his submarine. They discover the culprit to be a gigantic octopus, apparently stirred from the depths by an H-bomb detonation. The enormous(and angry) octopus attacks and sinks a trawler, snatches beachgoers and eventually surfaces at San Francisco, where it wraps itself around the Golden Gate Bridge! It is up to Matthews and the scientists to stop the menacing undersea arthropod. (no spoilers). Though not my favorite movie of this genre It Came From Beneath The Sea is still, I think, hugely entertaining fare, with the steady presence of Kenneth Tobey. The giant octopus attacking the Golden Gate Bridge is a memorable scene, perhaps the most among films of this type. This film is available on Region 1 DVD, with lots of extras: subtitles(various), theatrical trailers, scene selection, remastered audio, and two featurettes: "The Harryhausen Chronicles" and "This is Dynamation". Post your comments of this fun 1950's sci-fi film here. All replies welcome. :) |

I love this film. The infamous 'sextopus' looks pretty darn good and the film as a whole is enjoyable for me. The three leads; Tobey, Domergue and Curtis all handle their roles solidly and one of my favorite scenes, aside from the beastie scenes would be the bit where Domergue uses her charms to get a sailor to open up about what he really saw at sea. Lots of fun and I visit this film quite often. |

Indeed, Tobey not only appeared to handle his role solidly but also Faith Domergue "solidly" as well . Tobey definitely had the needed "presence" for these type of films-a no-nonsense(but not overbearing), business-like demeanor with a touch of humor, the necessary cigarette habit , and that ability to snap at somebody on a dime when necessary. I think he was very good in this film and also in The Thing From Another World(1951). Kenneth Tobey, along with William Hopper, are two of my favorite actors from these 1950's monster films.

Couldn't agree, more, packmule! thumbs up Tobey always is fun to watch and I think it's a shame that Hopper wasn't in more of this style film. We definitely need, The Deadly Mantis on DVD. rockin |

I agree. This movie seems to have "fallen through the cracks". I have it on VHS, among my small(now) collection of tapes. I tried to copy it to DVD-R but the tape has that anti-copy feature thumbs down The "sextopus" reference you made...was that referring to the fact that the giant octopus in this film had only six arms? Or was it seven? I know it did not have eight arms, because this is rather infamous trivia about It Came From Beneath The Sea. I doubt if the majority of people watching this film notice...but I could be wrong. eyebrow |

I did the same thing! I also tried; The Mole People, The Land Unknown, Tarantula (although I can now get it for Region 2) and Cult of the Cobra and Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. I was only trying to get DVD+R back-ups, as I've darn near worn out the VHS.....wasn't planning on selling any copies for profit!
Yes, just the six arms and according to Harryhausen, because of budget restraints, they could only afford the six arms. I have a small figurine of the octopus from, It Came From Beneath the Sea and it comes with just the six arms, too! Mr Green |

The way Kenneth Tobey was putting the moves on Faith Domergue in this film I'm sure she probably thought Tobey had six arms as well.

It Came From Beneath The Sea(1955) is being re-released on DVD as a two disc Special Edition tomorrow, 1-15-08. The 1:85.1 widescreen transfer will look better and a colorized version of this classic movie will also be part of the DVD package, much like Twenty Million Miles To Earth(1957), another 50's classic which was re-released as a SE DVD last year.
