I have only two Alfred Hitchcock directed films in my ever growing DVD collection, which I hope to remedy in the next couple of years. Until then I will be satisfied with the two(2) that I have, Psycho(1960), and a film released three years later, in 1963, in which the pecking order(no pun intended tongue and cheek ) between humans and our avian companions is reversed for about two hours: The Birds, a movie based on a story written by Daphne Du Maurier, and released by Universal Studios. The story: a beautiful blonde named Melanie Daniels(Tippi Hedren) secretly follows a new male acquaintance, Mitch Brenner(Rod Taylor), north into the small, northern California seaside community of Bodega Bay. The blonde is inexplicably attacked by a single seagull. At first this incident is thought to be random, but the bird attacks become more frequent, and, unfortunately for the local populace, more savage. As the death toll mounts from the swarms of aggressive and marauding birds Brenner holes up in his house with his mother(Jessica Tandy), his kid sister, and Ms. Daniels, in the hopes that barricading the house will keep the suddenly berserker birds out. The avians, however, have other ideas(no spoilers). -----------Observations: a truly outstanding film. The cast, the directing, the action(and bird) sequences are stellar. The villains in this movie are (literally) foul tongue and cheek . The DVD of this movie is also marvelous, with lots of extras, including production notes and photos, Tippi Hedren's screen test, the original ending, a deleted scene, storyboard illustrations, the theatrical trailer, a newsreel entitled "The Birds Is Coming", and a featurette about the movie. The DVD (inside) cover sleeve also has more info. One of the best DVDs in my collection, hands down. Post your takes and critiques of this film and DVD here. All replies welcome. busy bee |

I can still recall my first-ever viewing of this classic film. I was spending the weekend with a cousin and we were probably about 6 or 7 years old and the film came on Sunday afternoon TV. We sat there and both of us were totally enthralled by this film. A couple of intense scenes for kids of our age that even today, still creep me out...one scene being the farmer that Mrs Brenner finds. Hitchcock simply brings everything together with this film...the cast, the feel to the film and the intense tension the viewer feels throughout the film. I agree, packmule, the disc is an excellent one....I have an earlier release of the film on DVD, but I'm thrilled with this purchase. |

A memorable scene to be sure...seeing someone pecked to death, with their eyes missing is definitely creepy. The "bird" effects, from what I understand, were quite complex, and took great care(and time) to execute. I was unaware(until doing a "google" search) that Tippi Hedren is Melanie Griffith's mother. Not surprising after looking at images of the two, both women very beautiful . The cast of characters in this film are very good-the edgy flirtations between Rod Taylor and Tippi Hedren are often amusing. Jessica Tandy is also good as the jittery, somewhat nervous mother of Brenner. I also liked Suzanne Pleshette(the school teacher and Brenner's ex-girlfriend) in this film-she was at once a little mysterious and very sultry . I also liked the fact that there was no explanation given as to why the birds attack. It leaves it to the viewer's imagination, something I don't always like in a movie, but I think was absolutely appropriate for this particular film. Considering who directed it, Alfred Hitchcock, it comes as no surprise to me. thumbs up

I noticed while browsing the Sci-Fi Channel's website, under their "Rumors" link, that there is a remake in the works for The Birds(1963). faster <!--emo&shifty eyes--> <!--endemo-->

thumbs down thumbs down thumbs down thumbs down thumbs down thumbs down That IS NOT good news. Why can't these leave these classics alone and do something new? Is Hollywood that fresh out of ideas that they have to keep re-visiting the classics? |

Sadly, I'd have to agree. I simply cannot believe that all writers are now a dry well. I mean, have people totally lost their ability to use their imagination? I kind of think they have, based on watching some of my young nieces and nephews. When I was their age, my two younger brothers and I and my cousins used to spend HOURS outside playing and coming up with all sorts of play ideas, but it seems many of today's kids have been raised on TV and not in a good way, simply to keep them occupied. As kids we might have gotten some ideas from TV or films, but we expanded upong them and made play-time something exciting and new, every day. You almost have to take today's kids by the hands and show them how to play, make-believe. Perhaps this is what's happened to those that run Hollywood, too much sitting around watching other people's efforts and they can't think of anything new on their own, so they THINK they can improve on a classic and in my own humble opinion, a classic for the most part, simply cannot be made any better.....that's why we usually call them, classic.

Indeed, or just about anything else in life. There are exceptions to this Kimi. We have one of those in our midst in Corey, aka "King Joe", a registered member here. He is young but considerate and, I think, intelligent way beyond his years thumbs up . Pictured: the exquisitely beautiful Tippi Hedren, who played "Melanie Daniels", in 1963's The Birds |

Definitely plenty of exceptions and I should have said that, so apologies to all you 'young' classic fans, you do my heart good, whenever I realize how young someone is and how much they appreciate the classics. I'm trying so hard to help my nieces and nephews appreciate the classics, but it reamins to be seen if I'll ever convert them. My newest and youngest niece is only three months old, but I already told my brother, she's definitely going to be exposed to the classics, if I have my way! ;) |

In addition to the 'eyeless' farmer shocking the heck out of me the first time I saw the film, the eventual demise of Suzanne Pleshette.

Indeed. I think Jessica Tandy was also shocked at the sight of the eyeless farmer "Fred". I was disheartened by the death of Suzanne Pleshette's character in this film, though she died saving Brenner's kid sister(getting her into the house safely before the birds could kill her as well). I liked Pleshette's character in this movie-she and Tippi Hedren's scenes together were great, and the brunette was, like her blonde co-star, a beautiful woman. |

The Birds is great when I saw it, my friend also watched it and enjoyed it (He thinks its better then Psycho, but I think Psycho is better then The Birds, shows that me and my friend have different views in films). Also about the re-making classic films, I think Hollywood is nearly out of new Ideas, perhaps they should take a look at my fanfiction story's or remake the films which didnt do good back when they were made (Example: The Giant Gila Monster) |

Why do you think Psycho(1960) is better than The Birds(1963), Matthew? Just curious. I think most would agree, Matthew, that The Giant Gila Monster(1959) fell flat at the box office because it was horrendous, even by 50's B-movie standards. I agree with you that some old classics might get the "remake" treatment, just not "The Giant Gila Monster". |

Curiosity kills the cat or in this case, the donkey. ;) Well hard to say, but Psycho was more surprising, it's acting also seemed better... thanks to the one who gave life to Norman Bates, boy he was good.
I havent really seen the film, but we dont know what the budget was at the time, it could explain the reason why its effects were poor, but Im sure it has its own charm.
I think they are focussed on how much money they want to get, so thats why they remake the films which did good. Of course I would like the old B films to get remade with with respect and of course should be written by someone who loves those old films. B) |

It's also one of mine. Like other "Hitchcock" directed films the characters drive the movie-in this case great actors like Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Pleshette and, in her film debut, Tippi Hedren. I particularly liked Rod Taylor in this movie. thumbs up |

I happened to get off work early today and got home in time to catch The Birds(1963) on TCM, and just as it was starting. Watching this movie reminded me of just how beautiful Tippi Hedren was in this movie.

The remake of The Birds(1963) is still a go and the remake may in fact end up in 3-D: http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/30598/the-birds-remake-just-might-be-3d I cannot say I'm looking forward to a remake of the 1963 Hitchcock directed classic but I am going to keep an eye on the development of the remake...just out of curiosity.
