There were many low budget sci-fi and horror films made during the 1950's and 1960's-when it comes to critiquing them I am a notorious softie. I admit I like many of the so-called stinkers that made it to the big screen, and ultimately to DVD. One of these, and a personal low-budget sci-fi favorite of mine is Frankenstein Meets The Space Monster, a film released in 1965 that had only a two week run in theaters nationwide. I guess film critics, and movieplex owners, knew something back then that I(still) don't know now . The film's story: American rockets are being mysteriously blasted to bits after exiting Earth's atmosphere and entering the planet's orbit. In response, a pair of scientists, with the blessing of the military and NASA, put their latest creation, an android named Frank Saunders(played by Robery Reilly), into another rocket, which is sent into space to investigate the lost rockets. Unbeknownst to NASA an alien ship orbiting the Earth has been destroying the NASA manned rockets, and they do the same to Saunder's rocket, which is obliterated. The android manages to bail out and survive, the aliens landing nearby. A pair of the aliens attack Saunders with their weapons and the resulting blast grotesquely scorches off half of the android's face, also damaging Saunder's brain. The android immediately begins a wandering, almost drunkardly walkabout, killing numerous locals, who are understandably terrified at his disfigured appearance. Meanwhile, the aliens, led by a female, Princess Marcuzan(Marilyn Hanold), and a bald, pointy-eared accomplice (appropriately) named Doctor Nadir(Lou Cutell), order their crew to begin collecting human females for breeding purposes. In the last half-hour of this low-budget affair we are treated to an all out military assault on the alien's spaceship, and a brief but intense battle between the disfigured android Frank Saunders and the alien's pet, a hulking monster called Mull. This film also stars James Karen and Karen Grant. Directed by Robert Gaffney. Observations: this film has achieved turkey status in the 2005 and 2006 DVD And Video Guide, understandable as it is a typical low-budget affair, with special effects that are shaky at best, a plotline full of holes, and acting that is, for the most part, absolutely atrocious. Still, IMO some turkeys can be enjoyed, even when it's not Thanksgiving. There are some interesting scenes in this movie, to be sure, the damaged android looks fairly grisly, and the battle between the android and the space monster inside the alien ship at the climax is not altogether bad. This film is now officially available on DVD at www.darkskyfilms.com. The film has also appeared on the market under titles like Mars Invades Puerto Rico, Mars Attacks Puerto Rico, and Operation San Juan. Discuss your takes and opinions of this cheesy but fun B&W sci-fi/horror movie here. All replies welcome. busy bee

A Google or Yahoo search will provide you with ample information about this interesting low-budget sci-fi horror film. Believe me when I tell you that there are plenty of cheesy sci-fi flicks from the 50's and 60's that aren't worth a crap for watching. This film has, IMO, enough entertainment value to keep the serious fan of these older films interested. Will it blow you away? Absolutely not. Will it entertain you when you put it in your DVD player once or twice a year? You bet it will. thumbs up |

This is definitely one of those films you have to see to believe. I enjoy it, but then lots of folks tell me I have no taste whatsoever! I don't care, films like this with a possible goofy plot, weird beasties and no budget somehow make any viewing enjoyable. You certainly don't need to think at all when watching this film, you simply sit back and relax and let the fun wash over you. I have this on DVD-R, I purchased this a few years abck, but now that it has an official DVD release, I will be replacing the DVD-R with the DVD. thumbs up |

I have always felt that a remake of this film could work, given the proper allocation of $ to the special effects and the sets. The plot is, IMO, entirely plausible. In fact, there was an episode of The Six Million Dollar Man(1974-1978) in which an astronaut sent up in space crash lands, the descent somehow scewing up his equilibrium and turning him into a maniac with adrenaline-enhanced super-human strength-Steve Austin, the bionic "star" of this TV series, had to prowl the rugged northern California countryside to track down and subdue the crazed astronaut. There is a rough similarity in that episode to the story of this film, at least in regards to astronaut Frank Saunders. Were the special effects re-done, the sets more authentic, the monster Mull updated, and the acting obviously better, this film would be, IMO, a solid sci-fi/horror movie. The title might have to be changed. confused |

I found this brief web page blurb about Marilyn Hanold, a 1959 Playboy playmate turned actress who starred in The Brain That Wouldn't Die(1962) and of course Frankenstein Meets The Space Monster(1965), in the latter film portraying the antagonist alien Princess Marcuzan. Amusement is a common reaction among those who have seen Frankenstein Meets The Space Monster and posted their thoughts about it, especially at the "Classic Horror Film Board"(CHFB). This movie has, since its Region 1 DVD release by Dark Sky Films, been airing somewhat more often on AMC(American Movie Classics) and has been part of AMC's "Monsterfest"(now called Fearfest) programming lineup for two consecutive years.
