MONSTERLAND FORUMS was created on January 29, 2006 for the purpose of giving fans of giant monster films and other sci-fi/horror movies a friendly online meeting place to discuss all of their favorite films and other things of interest like video gaming and sports.

MONSTERLAND FORUMS has 180,000 posts. This online community, while over twelve years old, is currently no longer as active as the early years(between 2007-2009). Still, we have a half dozen members who continue to participate here.

For those who enjoy giant monster movies be sure to check out THE MEG, opening in theaters on August 10th, 2018. This film, based on the 1997 book "Meg", written by Steve Alten, features an enormous, 75 foot long Megalodon shark! Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. In these movies, 250 foot tall robots defend Earth from an assault of other worldly giant monsters(kaiju).

So the other day I was re-inventorying my DVD collection and discovered that I have numerous DVD versions of either the '54 G film or its American version including:

-the 1998 Simitar DVD Godzilla King Of The Monsters(1956)

- the Region 4 Madman Entertainment DVD release with both Gojira(1954) and GKOTM(1956)

-two(2) copies of the Classic Media DVD release featuring both versions

-the Criterion DVD release featuring both movie versions

loco2
Well, it's no secret that the latter two are the best releases so far. (with the Criterion disc being the best between the two)

Since I already own the Criterion "Godzilla" DVD I have been undecided about purchasing the Criterion Blu Ray release of this movie. Opinions, gents? Should I buy the Blu Ray even though I already own the DVD? heyo

Oh wow. I thought you were talking about the Criterion Godzilla blu ray. Yes. Absolutely get it! It's very much worth adding to your collection. Great picture and cool extras. A nice little black and white pamphlet about the movie and Godzilla himself, etc. Its the best of the G '54 releases so far.

I'm on the fence about double-dipping with stuff like that. I haven't read reviews, but all I can say is that I'm extremely happy with my Blu-ray, and I think it looks amazing.

Stuff like this; in other words, stuff that I'm really excited or care a lot about, I always try to pick up the Blu-ray, because I know that for the most part, the Blu-rays are going to be superior to the DVD releases.

Had a pretty interesting experience with this movie this weekend. I showed it to a friend of mine that I've been watching Rifftrax/MST3k with and he had come to see the 2014 Godzilla with me.

I showed him the Criterion version. I explained ahead of time how dark this movie is and it's not a typical monster film. He was enjoying it although seeing that it wasn't a lighthearted kaiju romp. Then Godzilla came ashore and I literally saw his jaw drop. He even mentioned how the musical score added to what was on the screen. His eyes were glued to the screen and it almost looked like he was choking back tears as the mother held her three children and told them they'd soon be with daddy. Then when it came time to finally reveal what Dr. Serizawa had shown Emiko, he said he needed the bathroom but he would hold it because he was so intrigued.

It kinda brought new life into this one for me. While I believe it is and always will be great, it's just not an easy one for me to just whip off the shelf and pop in the player. I've always had to be in the mood for it. But to see through someone else's eyes who was seeing it for the first time, and also having not seen the "King of the Monsters" version, was a very interesting experience.

The next time you screen a Godzilla movie with your friend you may want to suggest he go easy(or easier) on the beverages, alcoholic or otherwise before settling in to watch the movie. If his urge was #2 in nature, well then that suggestion obviously doesn't apply. clowny1

Cool story, dph. It's always great to hear of someone reacting positively to their first Godzilla movie viewing. thumbz up

Godzilla turned 61 years old yesterday, 11/3. That's right: Gojira(1954) debuted in theaters in Japan back on November 3, 1954.
