Welcome to MONSTERLAND FORUMS! We are a casual and friendly online community of movie fans who like to talk about giant monsters, horror and sci-fi in cinema, on television and on Blu Ray/DVD. There are forums for sports, casual chat and video games as well. For those of you who like making art, writing stories and creating videos, our community includes a forum for these submissions as well. Check out our main index page and other board forums! Anyone is welcome to join our community!

MONSTERLAND FORUMS was created on January 29, 2006 for the purpose of giving fans of giant monster films and other sci-fi/horror movies a friendly online meeting place to discuss all of their favorite films and other things of interest like video gaming and sports.

MONSTERLAND FORUMS has 180,000 posts. This online community, while over twelve years old, is currently no longer as active as the early years(between 2007-2009). Still, we have a half dozen members who continue to participate here.

For those who enjoy giant monster movies be sure to check out THE MEG, opening in theaters on August 10th, 2018. This film, based on the 1997 book "Meg", written by Steve Alten, features an enormous, 75 foot long Megalodon shark! Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. In these movies, 250 foot tall robots defend Earth from an assault of other worldly giant monsters(kaiju).

Godzilla/Gojira (1954) to me is a landmark film, its dark and shows the horror of the Atomic Bomb.

The Special Effects are nice for its time, the G-suit is well detailed and is one of my favorites.

I liked how Godzilla destroyed most of the city, the miniatures were detailed nicely and the fire looks cool, The atomic ray for its first attempt was good.

I think this is the best film out of the showa and the rest of the franchise.

Agreed. Which one do you prefer to watch: the 1954 original in Japanese language(with English subtitles) or the "Americanized" version with Raymond Burr that hit American theaters in 1956? heyo

The Original Japanese version with English subtitles, I used to watch the one with Raymond burr, but once I saw the Jap version, it was better.

I prefer the original Japanese version as well, though I often have been puzzled by the harsh criticism and disdain I have seen posted at various boards about Godzilla King Of The Monsters(1956), the American version with Raymond Burr. I have always thought Burr's performance in GKOTM was solid-his acting was steady, never over the top, and he seemed to take the role seriously. Later in life as he got older Raymond Burr, in media interviews, expressed fondness for the film and the "Godzilla" character. Burr is the main reason why I can watch Godzilla 1985.

IMO the American version cutted down the dark messages of what the Original had, the American one seemed more of the "atomic monster on the loose" instead of been a film with a message.

Agreed. No doubt the original is much more grim and moody. Have you watched any of the extras for the Classic Media re-release of "Gojira" and "GKOTM"?

I also have the "Madman Entertainment" Region 4 "Gojira" DVD with both versions. It's a great disc as well. thumbs up

Ive got the Madman DVD, it does have the original trailer, which looks good.

Anyway I could post some of the messages Gojira/Godzilla (1954) had.

Did you cry because Godzilla perished or because of all the people who died? Just curious. It was a sad movie, and really did the job getting the message across at the type of damage that nuclear power is capable of.

Quite honestly, both. The scenes with the wounded people and the singing girls were very, very touching, but hearing Gojira roar in agony at the end made me feel sorry for the big guy. :(

I have often questioned why I would feel sorry, as I have on occasion, for these monsters as they meet their demise, after causing so much destruction and killing. Immediate examples of this would be The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms(1953) and Gojira(1954). What do you think makes us sympathize with these monsters that we grieve their death, Kex? Or anyone else?

I have no idea. It is possible we think about them differently since they're "just monsters". Kind of like how we say "don't blame him, he's just a child".

Otherwise, I have no idea at all. heyo

I felt similarly about King Kong, though I never really thought of him as a child, but rather just a lonely remnant of a past species, the last of his kind, only wanting to be left alone. Of course we all to know what happened to him.

Yes, Kong got offed. He really didn't deserve that. :(

Gojira may have been a terror and seemingly unstoppable engine of destruction, but... I can't blame him anyway. :(

heyo Wait, you're the only one using this?

No, though I admit I use this emoticon probably more than most everyone else around here. Feel free to use this emoticon as much you want. Mr Green I like this emoticon because it reminds me of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, formerly a pro wrestler in the(then) WWF and now an actor.

Topic: I understand that an original theatrical poster for Godzilla King Of The Monsters(1956) can command over $5000. shocked smiley

The American cut with Raymond Burr was good, but it left out a few scenes originally included in the Japanese version. You should check it out.

The Classic Media DVD re-release of Gojira(1954)/Godzilla King Of The Monsters(1956) is, IMO, one of the best DVD "treatments" of movies I have ever seen.

I also have the Region 4/PAL "Madman Entertainment" DVD of Gojira/Godzilla King Of The Monsters-it's great but is, IMO, surpassed by the Classic Media release.

I just watched the original
It is by far so much better than GKOM
with out the interruption of Steve Martins flash backs it runs smoother
it also seems more dark
I really enjoyed it

I agree with you that the original film, Gojira, is the better film. I see GKOTM widely criticized on the internet, which is somewhat disappointing for me, though I can understand why it's not liked as much. My fondness for GKOTM is sentimental: it was the second "Godzilla" movie I ever saw as a kid(after DAM in a movie theater). :)
