I still love GKOTM
It will always be one of my favorites

I feel likewise about this film. It was common knowledge that Raymond Burr, who went on to star in popular television series like Perry Mason and Ironside, was very fond of GKOTM, and his role in GKOTM as "Steve Martin". thumbs up

Here's something I found sometime ago, it may shock you.

People keep saying that the original Godzilla film was inspired by The Beast from 20,00 fathoms, but TBF20,00F was Released in Japan the 22nd of December 1954, while the original Godzilla was Release in Japan the 3rd of November 1954, Ive also heard that King Kong had a re-Release in 1952, so IMO Godzilla wasnt inspired by The Beast from 20,000 fathoms, but TBF20,000F is still the first atomic monster film.

There are similarities between the two but I have never been under the impression that Toho's Tomoyuki Tanaka was "inspired" to make Gojira because of TBF2O,OOOF.
My understanding, Matthew, is that 1933's King Kong was the major influence, and inspiration, for Tanaka's creation of the original Godzilla movie. It's no secret Eiji Tsuburaya was also a great fan of the "Kong" character as well.

Most of what I've read in articles or features on Gojira point to Tanaka and Tsuburaya's liking of Willis O'Briens work on King Kong, and, realizing they didnt have the time or funding to do any kind of stop-motion work of their own, decided on the suitmation route for their monster.

If you listen to any of the Ray Harryhausen interviews, Josh, that are DVD extras on some of the various fantasy and sci-fi films featuring Harryhausen's stop motion effects, he states that the "stop motion" process of creating the effects was extremely time consuming, no doubt, and as you alluded to, why Eiji Tsuburaya recommended the "suitmation" route to Tanaka during the pre-production phase of the film Gojira(1954).

I'm curious, Josh: what's your take on Raymond Burr's performance in Godzilla King Of The Monsters(1956)? heyo

Every time I've gotten a Harryhausen DVD I've watched those "Harryhausen Chronicles" features that are included with each one. I remember him discussing the skeleton sequence in Jason and the Argonauts and how it took him months to make that one segment. It sounds to me that stop-motion animation, given its nature, is probably reserved only for the most patient people of this world.

As far as Burr, I did actually like his performance in GKOTM. His scenes were edited in well and through the use of character doubles they did a pretty good job of making it look like he was right there with the main protagonists. His acting was also handled well, and I believe his tape-recorded vocal journal entries helped add to the suspense and impending doom of Godzillas last destructive assault.

The American trailer for GKOTM: http://youtube.com/watch?v=Dd5gWX19Oww

Watching the reporter "Steve Martin" speaking into the audio recording device while the 50 meter tall Godzilla rampages towards his location I came to a singular conclusion: had it been me speaking into that device I would have interrupted my commentary for frequent shots of whiskey...straight from the bottle.

Another trailer for GKOTM: http://youtube.com/watch?v=XnZ6Ktjynh0

Just watched this film again for the first time in years...always makes for good viewing and very much has a different dynamic considering the lightheartedness of most of it's sequels...which I personally find myself more into the darker entries myself.

The film has really stood the test of time....sure it looks rather dated but the foundations of it are almost as strong as ever and it's really a testament to it that franchise lasted 50 years and 28 films...and the sheer fact that the future could still have plans for our favourite radioactive dinosaur.

This movie has a heavy-hearted feeling that really made this movie work. I can't put my finger on it. The characters are well developed, the score is amazing, the story is one you just don't get tired of.

I'm not fussed really...I've found myself watching alot of black and white films.....I even own a few silent films on DVD....however I've also found alot of colourized versions of films end up with bad results...let us not forget the colourized version of Night of the Living Dead....on the other hand if it were done right it would be more accessible to more teen and young adults that seem to accuse all old films of being bad....which is odd as I find good movies to be rather rare these days.

Did you ever see the Godzilla vs Biollante Trailer that was made up of scenes from the orignal Gojira but in color.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRVJWb_FMXc

I thought it was really cool because there wasn't alot of direct light used. It was all given the "Fire" look

Ir's kinda odd that they would do that even for a teaser...but as I said if they did it well..I wouldn't be opposed to it. Also lone as they don't mess it up like Night of the Living Dead...then again there are quite a few messed up versions of Night of the Living Dead....anyway the colour from that trailer kinda remainded me of Gorgo

Trying to imagine GKOTM in color is like watching some of these recent Harryhausen "stop motion" sci-fi films that have come with colorized versions, e.g. Twenty Million Miles To Earth(1957) and It Came From Beneath The Sea(1955). Can you imagine seeing Kenneth Tobey's red hair in color? You'd have to don shades for that. shiftyeyes

Gojira (Godzilla) in color would be pointless. The stark black and white adds to the somber, brooding tone.

Man, you guys had alot of stuff I could talk about. You guys are too late. In 1983, during the first real Godzilla depression , a french director who I forgot the name, decided to do this to gojira:

-use a US print and take out Raymond burr parts, making the film VERRY short
-colored the film with poor color gells, with a limited selection of 11 colors
-added footage from rodan and Godzilla raids again (like Rodan's US begining)
-when released into theaters, the seats had vibrators in the floor to shake the sea every time Godzilla will stomp.

It was not released on VHS but was aired on TV till Toho claimed copyright in 1991.

^I have seen that also. But this is a rarely acknowledged version of GKOTM and there is very rarely a testimony to the film. But with a good hour of Google search, I could find some articles.

And I might want to add something: discontent for the CM 2 disc set. Here is what I felt lacking:

-CM could have brought the documentary on the Lucky Dragon No. 7 from BFI to add.
-Blue Oyster Cult's music video for Go Go Godzilla not only used clips exclusively from GKOTM but also has alternate riffs at the beginning, not making it sound cheesy.
-On the GKOTM disc, they could have added the trailer for Kaiju O Gojira, the Japanese trailer for the Burr Version of GKOTM
-CM did promise us pic galleries. I saw a sample of the BFI and it had an excellent photo gallery.
-I wish they used regular ARMORY DVD casing. Every time I open my DVD set it sounds like it is breaking, but isn't.

I just saw a trailer for the new remake of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL. And the aliens are here to save the earth from humans. Ain't that what godzilla does? Japan (specificaly Ishiro Honda's daughter) claims that Godzilla is an incarnation of an angry shinto god punishing humans for pollutions and envoirmental abuse of the plannet. Is godzilla just getting really ignored this day and age or is it just me?

Ha, I don't know. That's kind of a stretch. I don't think Godzilla in the first movie was trying to save the environment. Maybe he did later, but in the original he represented nuclear annihilation. At least that's how I see it.

Of course I think Godzilla needs more recognition these days. That's why I'm back at work on my script again.

To us americans, that is what godzilla is. Fear of nuclear annihilation. But to the japanese, and especialy to one critic, he was the incarnation of a Shinto God. Ishiro Honda's daughter said it. And I kind of like it.

Speak for yourself. My first fear regarding Godzilla, assuming he were to appear in Atlanta, GA, would be being stomped on by his obviously large feet. tongue-1

I've actually never seen that version. At least, if I did, I can't remember anything about it. I have the new release that has both versions, so I really should watch it sometime. I liked Raymond Burr quite a lot in Godzilla 1985 as a kid, and still do. So as soon as I get to watch it I'll tell you what I think of him in it.
