For those who enjoy giant monster movies be sure to check out THE MEG, opening in theaters on August 10th, 2018. This film, based on the 1997 book "Meg", written by Steve Alten, features an enormous, 75 foot long Megalodon shark! Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. In these movies, 250 foot tall robots defend Earth from an assault of other worldly giant monsters(kaiju).

^Yes. Here is a rundown of the french colorized version:

Badly colorized version with Burr and Non-Burr scenes and scenes from Godzilla Raids Again and Rodan interspliced. What you think?

I'm thinking that the French person(or persons) who decided to colorize and release this film in color should have their heads examined. winky

I believe it. After seeing all those Turkish and Indian rip-offs of American movies, I'll believe anything.

Indeed. Ever heard of a film called Turkish Star Wars? Google it. winky

The absence of color in Gojira(1954) may have been a budgetary measure by Toho during the production of this film. I don't really know one way or another. The absence of color lends, IMO to the overall sense of dread in the movie, and amplifies the stark and deliberate terror generated by Godzilla during his withering attack on Tokyo.

The fact this film was colorized tells me the Frenchies didn't get the gist of this film at all. winky

I'll probably just take your word for it for now, unless I'm feeling a bit masochistic at some point in the future. loco

And I agree. Gojira wouldn't have the same effect if it weren't in black and white.

he's brown, trust me, i herd on toho kingdom, the godzilla suit from 1954 was brown, but seemed like a charcoal gray.

Godzilla King Of The Monsters(1956) - Revisited

With work slowing down considerably I managed to get off work early today and is my habit when I have some extra personal time I take in a classic Toho sci-fi or kaiju movie. Today's fare was one of my all time favorites, Godzilla King Of The Monsters, the Americanized version of the original Toho classic Gojira(1954), the DVD the stellar Region 1 release by Classic Media. This Classic Media DVD release of Gojira/GKOTM is one of the absolute best R1 DVD releases I have ever seen. thumbz up

I admit to having a great affection for GKOTM. It was the first Godzilla film I saw on television. GKOTM was released to theaters in the U.S. in 1956, two years after Gojira was first seen by audiences in Japan. The Americanized version features the inclusion of other actors, most notably American actor Raymond Burr, who would later gain lasting fame in the "Perry Mason" and "Ironside" TV series.

Observations about GKOTM, some good and some not so good:

-I liked Raymond Burr's performance in GKOTM. He delivered a steady, deliberate and conservative style to the character of United World News reporter "Steve Martin", something I think matched the overall tone of the film. Burr never displayed any flamboyance or any campiness at all and his straight faced style of acting is something I have always liked.

-the English dubbing for this film does, I admit leave something to be desired, particularly the dubbing for the character "Dr. Yamane" and "Dr. Serizawa".

-the inclusion of the additional scenes(for GKOTM) was hardly seamless and did not match those of the original film well at all, which was unfortunate

-while I like the Godzilla suit design for the first Godzilla film it's still not my favorite

-the character of "Steve Martin" in GKOTM was a veritable walking and talking advertisement for tobacco, both of the pipe and cigarette variety, the reporter smoking throughout much of the first half of GKOTM like a chimney

-the scene where Tomo and Steve Martin, both at rest in their tent, begin to hear the distant footsteps of an approaching Godzilla, and even above the increasing wind, was a surreal moment in the film for me

If I were gong to create a time capsule, fill it with various contents and then bury it underground in the hopes that someone centuries from now might find it and experience a bit of history, I would include GKOTM in the capsule. I believe this film will still, even that far into the future, be well worth the look back. winky

If you're referring to extras I'm not sure. After receiving this Region 4 DVD in the mail I watched Gojira and then put the DVD on my storage shelf and haven't watched it since.

The fact is I don't often check out a DVD's extras. I should but I don't. Hopefully I can change that trend in the near future.

First, the anti-nuclear message is more obvious in this film. Second, the acting is marginaly better. Third, more original characters. Fourth, more belivable due to fantasy elements. Fifth, I just like GMK more. Sixth, the human/kaiju interaction is alot better.

well, i think it's because it was, oh i don't know.........older, a 1954 movie have better things then a 2001, we have to show class and respect for the older films!

Older is does not mean better. A film may age well but it doesn't mean it is criticaly better. Age is an irrelevent thing about when critiquing films except for making a judgement weather or not you could compare SFX and camera-shots.

You could ask 20 people and get 20 different answers to which is the "Best" Godzilla movie. I love Ghidrah: The Three-Headed Monster. different tastes. That's what makes these forums wonderful. You get to hear every side for which one is the best. I love it!
