Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. Something was not to Toho's liking in regards to the photo galleries
Really? I haven't heard anything about that. I just checked the order status of both blu rays and they're scheduled to be shipped out tomorrow. I read about the recall for the G3 blue ray, but not for DAM.

Good luck if you get the DAM blu-ray. I heard they were being recalled
I checked both the CHFB(Classic Horror Film Board) and Sci-Fi Japan for any updates about a DAM Blu Ray recall and I saw nothing about this. Where did you see this "recall" issue posted on the internet, Evan? heyo

I just ordered the Criterion Godzilla DVD from Amazon a little while ago. Once I receive it in the mail, which should be no later than the end of next week, I'll watch this DVD and post some observations in this topic.

Well, both the criterion godzilla blu ray and destroy all monsters blu ray were both shipped out today from amazon. Maybe the dam recall was just a false rumor?

What I'm wondering Russ is whether you meant to type the word "damn" on your computer keyboard or if you were actually posting the abbreviation for the movie itself. tongue-1

If I ever get paid again, this will probably be my next purchase. I haven't seen a bad review for it yet and I'm interested to compare it with my Classic Media disc.

Ok, got the criterion godzilla blu ray and the Destroy All Monsters blu ray today. Just skimmed through both real fast and all I can say real quick is awesome. I compared the CM Godzilla to the Criterion Godzilla and there really isn't much comparison. The blu ray looks and sounds great. (I had the G blu ray and the CM G dvd playing in both my PS3 and Phillips blu ray player at the same time) If you don't have the blu ray yet, get it. Very well worth it.

I received my copy of the Criterion "Godzilla" DVD in the mail today from Amazon. I haven't watched either version of the '54 film yet on this release but when I do I'll post some thoughts.

I did unwrap this DVD and the packaging and cover art is marvelous! thumbz up

When I buy this, does anybody have a suggestion on whether I should get the DVD or the blu-ray? My blu-ray collection is small, and I want to expand it, but if I'm going to get just as good quality with the DVD, I might as well save a few pennies. Any advice?

I picked it up today, and I'm glad I did. It is as awesome as everybody says. I'm not through all the extras yet, and I haven't watched the commentaries yet, but so far it's worth what I paid for it. Definitely money I don't miss. big grin

I watched the Criterion "Godzilla" release last night, specifically the Americanized version of the '54 Toho classic called Godzilla King Of The Monsters. Some observations and questions based on my most recent viewing of GKOTM:

1. I am still, to this day, perplexed as to why the character "Dr. Yamane" describes Godzilla as being over 400 feet tall. That's about, oh 235 feet taller than the monster's official height of 50 meters(about 165 feet). huh?

2. I found the scene where one of the steamship survivors that floats onto the beach at Odo Island curious and kind of amusing at the same time. The survivor is afloat and hanging onto a piece of wood(presumably from his now sunk ship). He's unconscious. The natives on the island understandably try to revive the fellow who seems to come to. As soon he begins to lose consciousness again one of the islanders begins slapping the fading survivor, an act I would think would hasten the survivor's unconsciousness and not revive him from it. very funny

3. give the reporter on Tokyo Tower major props for showing some serious testicular fortitude as he remains on the tower, reporting the live assault on the city by Godzilla as the huge monster attacks the tower and causes it to crash to the ground.

Also, major props to Hideo Ogata(played by a very young Akira Takarada) for the scene where, seeing Godzilla looming over his fallen woman(Dr. Yamane's daughter Emiko) after the monster appears to the expedition party for the first time, Ogata immediately rushes to her aid, scoops her up in his arms and gets her farther away from the monster. Give the guy a cigar for having some serious guts. thumbz up

4. my only gripe with this film, which I have the same amount of disdain for as the first time I watched this movie as a kid: the use of a puppet to render Godzilla for certain shots. I've never been a fan of the puppetry arts in movies. Period. winky

5. the second ship incinerated by Godzilla explodes in flames before the monster even surfaces. I'm assuming it was the intent of Toho to make the viewer of this film believe that Godzilla's radiation could ignite a ship on the surface nearby without the monster even broaching the surface. heyo

6. Raymond Burr was a walking advertisement for cigarettes and pipe tobacco in this film, given the frequency with which the American actor lit up in this movie.

7. the score of this film is marvelous and helps ramp up the overall grim and dark tone of the film extremely well

8. Godzilla suit actor Haruo Nakajima deserves major props for his performance in the suit. The only sequence I disliked was the shot where Godzilla, departing Tokyo after its main assault on the city, tries to swat at the jet fighters that are zooming down on Godzilla and firing away at the monster with cannon fire and missiles. The arm movements of Nakajima in the suit seemed jerky and didn't look good at all. Besides that Nakajima was terrific the suit. thumbz up

I'm going to watch the original Toho version tomorrow night.

If I may make a suggestion: I don't know if you've been through the extras yet, but since the time of my last post, I have listened to both commentaries and the major portion of the rest of the extras. My advice to you (and a few reviewers on Amazon who gave the disc one star) is to use the commentaries. Kalat jumps all over the place, and a lot of the time his words don't match up with what's on screen, but if you can pay close attention, there is a lot of interesting info there to be had.

Now, I'll try to add to some of your questions and comments:

Well, Dr. Yamane was so short and, when looking up at the creature from that hillside must have made it look incredibly huge.

Yeah, I probably wouldn't want somebody beating the crap out of me if I was out.

I would have saved her in a heartbeat. Mr. Green

I've never understood why they can't make a puppet that more closely resembles the actual costume; this film and Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster are the absolute worst offenders of this.

There's no way they would allow that in the movies nowadays. This movie would be boycotted by all pro-smokers.

Don't know if anyone else caught this, but it was kinda cool to see the US broadcast premiere of the english subtitled version of Gojira, along with the subbed versions of Rodan and Mothra on Turner Classic Movies last Friday. Nice change from the english dubbed offerings we've seen on here the past few years.

Anyone else think Takashi Shimura is the best actor in the film?
(Unless you count Godzilla, then of course he's more Iconic)
Even as a kid, this was my 4th Godzilla film. And his presence is much different then the rest of the actors.
Even more then Dr Serizawa(The Only Scientist with an Eye Patch)

Watch Seven Samurai or another Kurosawa film, and observe his acting.
In a lot of Japanese films, I see a general amount of Over Acting.
With him it's different. He's more reserved and cool.

I never get tired of watching him.
Definitely up there with my favorite Actors(Peter Cushing, Bruce Campbell, Takashi Shimura, Kim Novak, Jimmy Stewart, etc.)

Yes, I do.

As Toho actors go I've always considered him a favorite including others like Akira Takarada, Yoshio Tsuchiya, Akira Kubo and Kenji Sahara. thumbz up

Huge fan of Shimura, he's a giant in the field of acting IMO. Just watched Godzilla, Rashomon and I Live In Fear all over the span of a couple of weeks and I'm more convinced than ever of his abilities. Time for a Seven Samurai rewatch I do believe!

With me it's a tie between him and Mifune. I still can't make up my mind about those two.

And Shimura is the best actor in Godzilla. :)

One of the better actors from Toho during that time. I enjoy watching him. Along with Akira Takarada, Kenji Sahara, (who might be my favorite Toho actor) and Yoshio Tsuchiya. (who I think was great in every part he played) Hey Pack, ever think about starting a thread discussing the Toho actors and actresses from this time?

I was watching a documentary about the making of this movie and one of the things from it that perked my curiosity from it was when someone asked Ishiro Honda how long it would take to film Gojira using stop motion and he answered seven years. Seven years?! Really?

Well, think about all the destruction in the film. Not exactly as easy to render in stop motion as King Kong's rampage was, and just try to imagine how long it took to film the stop-motion effects in that movie. I wonder if they even had a clear idea of how they were going to accomplish that.

Still, I guess seven years would still be stretching it...

A monster movie that takes seven years to make. Unheard of to me. But it all worked out in the end. I honestly couldn't see these movies being made any other way without suitmation now.

- the Region 4 Madman Entertainment DVD release with both Gojira(1954) and GKOTM(1956)

-two(2) copies of the Classic Media DVD release featuring both versions
