Though I am not a great fan of time travel plots in movies, there is one major exception to this: The Time Machine, released by Warner Brothers to cinema in 1960. The film's story: in 1899 England an affable inventor(played by Rod Taylor) has invented a device by which to travel forward in time. He keeps his invention a secret from his housekeeper and friends, and is soon using the device to satisfy his curiosity about the future. His first destination is into the Second World War ravages of his hometown, and then forward to the year 1966, where he must quickly reactivate his machine to avoid an atomic blast, courtesy of what is implied to be WW3. The force of the blast outside his machine renders "George"(the inventor) unconscious-as he slumps forward onto the lever controlling the device's speed gauge, the machine accelerates George, finally stopping in the year 802,701! George regains consciousness and is greeted by a group of emotionless, and seemingly indifferent, flaxen-haired men and women, the Eloi, who live a quiet, uneventful, passive existence on the surface, when they are not being compelled to slavery by the nocturnal, and quite ugly I might add, Morloks. (no spoilers). This film remains, IMO, a timeless classic(no pun intended). Rod Taylor is terrific in this movie, as is Yvette Mimieux, despite her lack of lines(she plays "Weena", one of the "Eloi"). The DVD is a remastered print, with 5.1 audio. The film is directed by George Pal, and is based on the book The Time Machine, written by H.G. Wells. The DVD extras include a theatrical trailer, various filmographies of the cast, subtitle options, and a behind-the-scenes documentary. One of the great classic sci-fi films of all time. Post you takes and critiques of this movie here. All replies welcome. :) |

thumbs up thumbs up I love this film, it has great looking sets and I thought for the year this was made, the special effects are decent enough as well. Solid cast and while I wish some aspects of the book had been followed a little more closely, I won't complain about this film, it's simply too fun to cast aside and this has become an annual, New Year's Eve viewing for me. Mr Green I think the DVD is a nice little package, as well. |

Very. That said I would not want to run into any Morlocks, from either the original 1960 classic or the remake from 2002. Pictured: a Morlock menaces lovely Weena(Yvette Mimieux) in The Time Machine(1960) |

I have the remake, The Time Machine, released in 2002, on DVD. I saw the film in a theater as well. The lead role of Professor Alex Hartegan is played by Guy Pearce. The movie also stars Jeremy Irons as the leader of the Morlocks and Sienna Guillory(she played "Jill Valentine" in Resident Evil-Apocalyse) as Hartegan's girlfriend Emma. The plot of this film parallels closely that of the 1960 original. The special effects are, predictably, much, much better, and the sequences involving Hartegan's use of his time machine are cool, and visually very effective. Guy Pearce is serviceable in his role. Jeremy Irons, a marvelous actor with a storied career, is very good as the leader of the Morlocks-the makeup effects of him and his Morlock "soldiers" are very good. That said this film lacks the grandeur and "pow!" that I thought it would deliver. Is this a good film? No. IMO better than average at best. Is it fun and entertaining to watch? Yes. As a diehard sci-fi fan this DVD was a must for my DVD shelf. I think you would like this film KF-you might want to rent it first before deciding whether to buy it. Considering it is already a four year old film, and the fact it did not do that well at the box office, I suspect you can get a good price on this DVD online at Amazon or elsewhere. :) Here's a link related to the 2002 remake and the DVD: The Time Machine(2002)-Official site |

Thanks very much for your thoughts on the film, packmule. :) I will definitely look into renting this and if it can be found cheap or used, I may simply purchase it sight onseen. |

I think you will like the remake KF. I also think you will find that the 2002 film lacks the charm of the 1960 original, and also the difference in how the role of the inventor is played, Rod Taylor Vs Guy Pearce. Pearce, IMO, is okay. He comes across as a little bit more cerebral. Rod Taylor seems more personable. One other major difference you will note(without spoilers) between the two films: the reason why the time machine is invented by these characters to begin with-the reasons are personal for both men in these two movies, and also totally different. |

Guess it's that time again...deciding whether to curse me or thank me I would say more but I absolutely do not want to spoil your experience in watching the 2002 remake of The Time Machine. I think after you have seen the remake you will understand, easily, why I said their reasons for the inventions of the time machine itself are different. The effects in the remake when Hartegan uses his time machine are very, very good! thumbs up |

:D Oh, I thank you more often than not, because if there's a film I haven't seen and it's recommended, then it offers me an opportunity to possibly find a new fave! :) I'm going away next Friday and Saturday and there's a flea market I'm going to and they always have a ton of DVDs out there, so I'll do my best to try and locate a copy of the remake. :) |

Good luck in finding The Time Machine(2002). Mr Green Re: "The Time Machine"(1960)-imagine travelling far, far into the future, past the year 802,000, only to discover that mankind is nothing more than androgenous-looking dullards wandering aimlessly throughout the countryside by day, and at night becoming endentured servants to a subterranean race of grotesque-looking monsters...it's no wonder "George"(the inventor) became highly motivated to teach the Eloi to fight back against the oppressive Morlocks. Also, another memorable scene from the 1960 film: George, discovering that all the books(and essentially all of mankind's written records) have been allowed to rot and become crumbling(literally), dusty relics. He got fairly fired up about this. evil beaver |

I always enjoyed the book when George realizes, much to his horror, that life has pretty much turned into huge slug-like creatures living on the beach. That always kind of creeped me out, when I read that. Oh, I remember how very horrified and angry George was in the '60 film, when he saw just how poorly looked after the books had become. My Dad always cracked me up, when we watched or talked about the film...he was always saying, 'With someone like Yvette Mimieux around, who'd have time to read!'. What makes that statement even funnier to me is, my Dad is an avid reader and usually is reading two or three books at the same time, but in the case of Mimieux, I guess he'd drop his reading down to two books? |

Or, in my case, considering how Yvette Mimieux looked in this film, down to zero books Yvette Mimieux has always been the classic beauty IMO-she still looked good in the made-for-TV horror movie Snowbeast and in the Walt Disney-produced The Black Hole(1979). bravo clap Pictured: Yvette Mimieux, from the early 1960's, and "Weena" in The Time Machine(1960) ...I can think of worse things in life than being stranded about 800,000 years in the future with this beauty to keep me company.

I always find it rather amusing that any woman that might have been a scientist or a survivor in a world that has gone horribly wrong, is more often than not, some gorgeous creature. I mean, take a look at the films, One Million B.C. and One Million Years B.C., all or the better part of those cavewomen were babes, bot a hairy, fat one in the bunch! <_< |

A fair and accurate observation. Example: One Million Years B.C.(1966)(which you mentioned). In this film many of the cavemen look filthy, with rotten-looking teeth, as opposed to the cavewomen, who all seem to look, at the very least, somewhat attractive, and at best stunning like Raquel Welch or Martine Beswick. There was a documentary, KF, on the Discovery Channel recently that depicted what cavewomen would actually look like. They were what you would might expect from humans with no modern day means of hygiene, like toothpaste and razors. The cavemen in this documentary looked even worse. Give this documentary credit for emphasizing realism...if nothing else. :ph43r: |

bravo clap I certainly understand the need for filmmakers to want to show some very attractive men and women in their films, but as you mentioned, how many toothbrushes, razors and bubble baths did these cavepeople actually ever have access to!? ;) |

This reminds me of the Latin beauty in 1960's The Lost World, the black-haired, dark-eyed beauty that the Challenger expedition find in the jungle as they explore the dinosaur-ridden plateau. This woman was wearing a skimpy tunic, along with perfectly coiffed hair and makeup, and was, predictably, assaulted(for sexual purposes) by one of the guides(the seedy hispanic fellow who was Fernando Lamas' "partner") |
