There is a very good magazine currently in circulation, started by Mr. J.D. Lees, a Canadian schoolteacher. The magazine is called G-Fan, and has been around since 1992. It used to be published every other month but currently hits the racks four times a year(quarterly), in March, June, September, and December. This magazine includes the latest info and news regarding Godzilla, Gamera, Ultraman and other giant Asian superheroes, as well as tokusatsu(action movies) films. Along with updates are great retrospectives on classic kaiju eiga and other films, as well as artist's submissions, fan mail, links to all the best kaiju and toy dealers, a DVD review page, and other various submissions. Mr. Lees has many individuals who contribute in the making of this fine publication. I have all but the first half-dozen issues, back when this zine was much smaller. G-Fan can be ordered as a subscription directly from the G-Fan website, or it can be found at Tower Records in the magazine section. There are also various comics/collectables shops that carry it as well-here in Atlanta, GA Oxford Comics carries G-Fan. The magazine runs $5.00 n issue or $20.00 for a year's subscription. Subscribers often get extra goodies with their issue in the form of special foldout art submissions. If you haven't read this magazine, I hope you will give it a try. Post any comments or questions about G-Fan here. Mr Green

I actually have a couple of issues of G-Fan, a fantastic magazine!!! thumbs up
Unfortunately the collector's shop I used to get them from (ACE/ Forbidden Planet) doesn't get them any more. A good magazine though and one I'd recomend to all of you Godzilla, Ultraman, and Gamera fans.

Just a reminder that you can get this magazine via a subscription, for about $20 a year(that's four issues). J.D. Lees accepts Paypal or you can mail him the payment as a check or money order. faster <!--emo&shifty eyes-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

But would he deliver to England?

That's a good question Johnny. If I were you I would locate his official email address, on his website, and send him an email asking him about this-if his answer is "yes" make sure to find out about shipping rates, etc. The link: G-Fan

If his answer is "no", perhaps I can pick up an extra copy of this magazine every three months and send it to you by mail. This is an option for you.

Okay Packmule, does G-Fan only come out every 3 months?
Also, I'd preffer it if you could pick up an extra copy and send it to me when the magazines are out (I'll pay you of course  ). Also, I might be moving house soon so if you could send me a PM before you send anything then that'd be great (just to avoid the parcel being sent to the wrong house crazy ).

Thanks

G-Fan ships internationally but you have to pay $25 a year instead of $20, IMO G-Fan took a huge dive in quality the past few years ever since JD had his falling out with a regular contributer to the magazine and as well as a fall out with director Shosuke (think that's his first name) Kaneko director of Gamera Trilogy and GMK.

I still respect JD as he is a very nice man and I'd like to meet him someday.

G-Fan used to be published every other month, or six times a year. J.D. Lees made it known to his readers of this magazine, through a statement in the magazine itself, of his intentions to cut back the issues to every three months, or quarterly. The reason: he wanted to be able to spend more time with his family-he has a wife and two daughters. While disappointed at the decrease in issues per year I consider his reason completely justified. Mr. Lees had lamented many times in his "hellos" to readers in the issues about the demands that this magazine placed on his time. Remember too that he is a schoolteacher, itself a tough job. I have never met him, only exhanged a few emails(not recently).I like his magazine and, as Godzilla fan, absolutely appreciate his effort since 1992(when the magazine began, a smaller publication) to keep this magazine going.

Thank you gvamp for the heads-up about the international rate being $25.00. Johnny, if you want to order it online for the $25, that is an option for you, or, as I mentioned before, I can mail you an extra copy when I pick up mine at Oxford Comics or Tower Records. The next issue, #76, should be out about now(summer issue-June). I will begin checking for it at Oxford or Tower this weekend.

Gvamp, I heard that J.D. Lees had a major falling out with Norman England(through a posting exchange with "kpa" at MZ earlier this year). Is this the "contributor" you were referring to? Also, "kpa"(Keith Aiken) made mention of the "Kaneko" incident as well-not saying I disbelieve any of it, though it certainly sounds out of character for J.D. Lees. confused

I stopped subscribing to the mag about a year ago. The content started to fall off, just as Gvamp stated. As a result of less content Lees has been dedicating more and more pages to that "Gfantis" comic. A comic I have NO interest in whatsoever. Fan fiction just doesn't interest me.

I understand your sentiments. I like many aspects of G-Fan: the film retrospectives, the DVD reviews, other various and sundry subjective articles regarding Godzilla, other kaiju, and Ultraman. The fan artwork I received over the years as a subscriber was a nice little bonus, most of the artwork very good. That said I do not like the "Gfantis" comic, nor do I like the "Rex Summerall" series of short stories. I also think there has been something of a decline as well. There may come a day when I may quit buying it because I just do not like it anymore. That day hasn't arrived for me, for better or worse, yet. eyebrow

That is indeed the person that JD had a falling out with, and yes it's true about the Kaneko incident because he refuses to mention his name in later issues of G-Fan.

As I mentioned earlier, I have a familiarity with the "Kaneko" incident involving J.D. Lees, but I am not informed about the soured relationship between Mr. Lees and Norman England. I have never met either individual. I have seen others on the internet who describe both as friendly, conscientous guys, so this is most unfortunate, especially regarding Mr. Lees, who appears to be a liason of sorts between Toho and fans here in the United States, Canada, and other Western countries. I find it most curious, and disheartening, to hear that he acted in such a despicable manner. thumbs down

I agree with you, and let me add that I allowed myself to become part of the very feuding that you mention, so much so that it resulted in me being banned from TK and Kaijuphile, which I accept responsibility for, and also some of the blame, but not all. It also resulted in me requesting, and receiving, membership terminations at Tokyomonsters forum and Kaiju Galaxy. I will not go into more specifics because it is water under the bridge. There are many, many good people at all of the aforementioned forums, and the sites themselves are I think all very good. There are no doubt many individuals on the major site forums that will continue to talk about others in a derogatory manner-I have been, and may still be, the subject of some of those conversations. I took a deep breath, considered why I was getting angry with other members on these boards, and made a decision to maintain myself at all times on the internet, regardless of the nature of the discussion, disagreement, or argument. For some people this comes easy, and for others, me included, it does not. I hope that these squabbles and other frictions within the fandom decrease.

So that's why JD Lees always trashes GMK! Ah-ha!

Anyway, about Godzilla internet fandom. It's a real shame. We've really created schizms and cliques for ourselves throughout the community, haven't we? I wonder if the lack of new Godzilla films has created a kind of malaise in the community. We don't really have anything new to discuss, or any common interests outside of the Big G, so we turn to gossip. Also, there are a few egos in the community as well. People who think they're the biggest fish in this little pond we call G-Fandom. Another possibility is the fanbase itself is comprised of a lot of young, immature kids who have nothing better to do than invade other people's boards and cause havoc.

There's a lot of factors for this schizm and I'm sure it's a combination of some or all the above comments.
