For those who enjoy giant monster movies be sure to check out THE MEG, opening in theaters on August 10th, 2018. This film, based on the 1997 book "Meg", written by Steve Alten, features an enormous, 75 foot long Megalodon shark! Other giant monster movies that we fans can look forward to: GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS(in 2019) and GODZILLA VS KONG in 2020! PACIFIC RIM-UPRISING(2018), the sequel to 2013's "Pacific Rim", is about to release to Ultra 4k and Blu Ray. In these movies, 250 foot tall robots defend Earth from an assault of other worldly giant monsters(kaiju).

Here's a great little sci-fi/horror gem from 1972. I guess you could call it a sort of remake or rethinking of the 1932 classic, Freaks. Directed by Jack Cardiff and starring Donald Pleasence, Tom Baker, Julie Ege, Brad Harris, Jill Haworth, Michael Dunn, Scott Anthony and some actual side-show acts, this film has some decent as well as a couple of gruesome looking beasties. Rather than the entire film taking place in a circus, this film tells the story of Professor Nolter (Pleasence) and his belief that humans will evolve into plant/human hybrids in an effort to survive an uncertain future. The weirdness begins when students of Nolter's begin disappearing and the circus begins adding new side-show attractions to their circus.

I had a wonky VHS of this film for several years and was thrilled when this was finally released to DVD, late last year. I purchased myself a fantastic looking original one-sheet of this film and earlier this year, was gifted with the complete lobby card set...to complete my collection of Freakmaker goodies.

Anyone else a fan of this film?

I've never heard of it but I love Donald Pleasance. Wish I had more to add, KaijuFan.

I'll add it to my rental list. Actually, I need to start a rental list. There's a TON of movies out there that I haven't seen. Luckily, I've got a video store down the road that caters to cult films. Heck, they even rent out bootlegs!

Wow! That sounds like a great little rental shop! We don't have many rental shops in this area and most cater to those that prefer recent releases rather than classics.

Yeah, this place is amazing. They've got just about everything. When I was going to college my film professors always recommended that place.

Of course, I live in a very rural area, so I don't or shouldn't expect so much from rental stores in my area. Even many of the retail stores cater to current releases and not so much the classics. Now, my roommate and I were visiting her hometown, which is a large metro area and I was in heaven! My gosh, but they had some wonderful retail stores and I could have and did spend hours looking through their selection of DVDs. Mr Green

I have not seen this film, but if Donald Pleasence is in it, it must be good. thumbs up

Pictured: Donald Pleasence(and assistant) about to perform some kind of surgery, most likely not of the outpatient variety, on a victim--from The Freakmaker(aka The Mutations)(1973)

Pleasence always added so much to any film he was a part of, much like Peter Cushing, in my opinion. Freakmaker is truly bizarre at times and I'd say some of the surgical end-results are rather gruesome, too. Fans of Pleasence will most likely find this an enjoyable effort.

This DVD is definitely worth picking up, not only for the great little film, but the DVD also includes a small reproduction of the original film poster...about 9½x14" as well as 3, 5x7" reproduced lobby cards. Great stuff, indeed! thumbs up

thumbs up Another great image from the film. Has anyone, other than myself picked this DVD up? As mentioned in an earlier post, this DVD is definitely worth picking up and it has a small reproduced poster for the film and postcard-sized lobby reproductions as well...of the more gruesome effects.

Wish that place carried, The Deadly Bees! Mr Green

Suggestion: email Ron Adams at his website, Creepy Classics, and ask him if he knows whether a DVD(-R) of this film can be had on the internet. Obvious places to check are: Amazon.com and eBay. I can tell you that Something Weird Video does not have it listed in their inventory. I am still keeping my eye open for this one, but so far I haven't seen it anywhere. thumbs down

Thanks, Lee, I'll do that. I have checked eBay quite often in the past, but rarely if ever come up with even a VHS of the film. I'm certain this film never saw an official VHS release in the States and can't be it was telecast on TV all that often, either, A friend of mine did tape if off the cable channel, USA, back when they used to have a Friday night of sci-fi/horror films, but the quality is just watchable, at best. eBay is usually a gold mine for DVD-Rs of these films, but this has turned out to be a rather elusive search for me, but I won't quite trying! :D
