I have always had great fondness for nature shows, be it documentaries about the natural wonders of the world or the kaleidoscope of animals that populate our world. Today there is a wider variety of programming on cable television regarding animals and wildlife-shows like Animal Rescue, which showcases the efforts of the various big city ASPCA's to catch those guilty of animal cruelty, and another show that chronicles a type of animal cruelty of it's own: When Animals Attack. This TV show is a compilation of footage of violent encounters between man and animals. Though "When Animals Attack" was not inspired by the movie in the topic of this thread, it no doubt could have been. The film I am referring to is Frogs, a horror movie released in 1972 by MGM. The film's story: Jason Crockett(played by Ray Milland) is a surly, generally disagreeable millionaire who has gathered family and friends to his island mansion for a party. Crockett displays a blatant disdain for many of his guests, including the non-human kind, much of his dislike for the local animal-life manifest in the rampant pollution on the island. Crockett is dead-set on having his party. The problem: the local animal life has decided to attend the party as well. The island becomes overrun with, of course, frogs, but also among the animals who have decided to crash the party are aggressive rattlers and water moccasins, several alligators, a small army of lizards, birds, tarantulas, and even one very large and formidable-looking loggerhead turtle. One by one the guests begin having very unpleasant encounters with these critters, including old man Crockett himself (no spoilers). Observations: I think this movie is a great mix of campy, creepy fun. The movie obviously goes out of it's way to creep out those with an aversion to anything that creeps or crawls, like snakes or large spiders, neither of these lacking in this feature. The acting is average-Sam Elliott is decent enough as the photographer Pickett Smith, and Joan Van Ark looks pretty good . Ray Milland's portrayal of the sullen, perpetually cranky Crockett is good, and kind of funny. The DVD of this movie is presented in either full frame or widescreen(1.85:1) options, and includes scene selection and a theatrical trailer. Fans of campy horror will like this one, which I recommend. If you are a casual horror movie fan and have a Netflix queue to burn use it on this older classic. I think you'll be glad you did. thumbs up If you've seen this film then post your takes and impressions of it here. All replies welcome. :) Pictured: feeling froggy? I love this film. It's a bit cheesy and over-the-top at times, but it's always been a fun viewing for me. I believe I mentioned this in an earlier post, somewhere.....the previews for this film always scared the heck out of me, as a kid. I would have been 7 the year this was released and I can still see the trailer being shown on TV and the 'huge' frog with the human hand hanging out of it....scared me to death, but I could never look away when the preview was shown on TV! Plenty of creepy crawlies in this film and there certainly didn't appear a safe haven for any of the family.....Ray Milland did a great job, he certainly came across as one cantankerous old man! |

Having read your posts about your aversion to spiders you must have cringed at the scene of the young blonde guy who fell and was immediately assaulted, and webbed over by the hordes of tarantulas-there was one very close up shot of one tarantula's fangs as it reared up-to be the sure the scene was not well rendered, as far as showing how this poor guy was injured, or subsequently trapped in the arachnid's webbing. That said the the small horde of black tarantulas was very creepy. evil beaver Image: an interesting poster for Frogs(1972). Note, Kimi, the advertisement at the bottom of the poster for the Godzilla film. thumbs up |

Very creepy indeed! That is an excellent poster and quite cool that Godzilla vs the Smog Monster was advertised, as well, would have been neat to see a combo poster of both films! |

I just love the artwork for the poster for this film, as a kid, that creeped the hell right out of me, that frog with a human hand hanging out. I'd dearly love to have an original of this poster, but not sure what kind of price I;d be looking at.

FROGS! Boy this film brings back memories , I was watching it at about three or four years old. For me it was pretty scary,(having a severe case of arachniphobia) MY mom was just laughing her head off. I bought the DVD at Wal-Mart and I relived the memories. I finnaly see what she was laughing at, it was pretty campy! But I still got scared, cause of the creepy music. I consider it a classic now.

With all the Remakes and 3-D junk happening all the time now, I actually wouldn't mind seeing Frogs Remade. If they used real Critters, and no 3-D, I think it could work. You just don't see nature coming together to destroy a group of people on an island. |
