In 1966 Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future of our Earth and space travel was realized when the television series Star Trek first aired on NBC. Set in the 23rd century, circa 2278, Earth is now a member of an intergalactic alliance called the United Federation Of Planets, and employs a fleet of starships, manned by uniformed officers and enlisted, both human and alien, to operate them. The first TV series, named Star Trek, chronicles the five year voyage of the Constitution-class starship Enterprise, captained by James Tiberius Kirk(played by William Shatner, and including the exec/science officer Spock, a Vulcan(played by Leonard Nimoy), and the medical officer(and Kirk's pal) Leonard McCoy(played by the late DeForest Kelly). The other primary cast members include the Chief Engineer, Montgomery Scott(played by the late James Doohan), the Communications officer, Uhura(played by Nichelle Nichols), the helmsman/asst science officer Pavel Chekhov(played by Walter Koenig), and lastly, the helmsman/navigator Sulu(played by George Takei). The ratings for Star Trek were always a bit shaky, despite the interesting episodes and plethora of alien species that were often featured. After the series went off the air in 1969, a long run of TV syndication would begin with this show, and it still appears today on the Sci-Fi channel from time to time. The first series was followed by other ST television series: Star Trek-The Next Generation, Star Trek-Deep Space Nine, Star Trek-Voyager, and Enterprise. There have also been ten(10) ST films on the big screen, all featuring the casts from the original series or from that of ST-TNG. Next up: a ST film in 2008, the rumor being that the plot will involve a young James T. Kirk and Spock, together in their first adventure. Talk about all things "Star Trek" here. All replies welcome.

I've wanted a new show for a while, but I was hoping it would take place on the Titan with Captain Riker.

I feel pretty much the same as the author. I'm trying to be as optimistic as possible about the new movie, but I'm just not sure yet. It could be amazing, or it could be a disaster.

Haha, yeah I'd heard about that on some of the Trek sites. I wonder what Star Trek cologne is even supposed to smell like? Kirk's manly sweat? Klingon body odor? Orion pheromones?

Some of the international posters are great, although I wish they had more Bones in them.

But the final theatrical poster is crap. The one with the white blurred Enterprise. Can't believe that one got approved.

Despite the fact the new "Star Trek" film directed by J.J. Abrams has yet to hit theaters, Paramount is already committed to a sequel to this film: http://www.accessatlanta.com/movies/content/movies/stories/2009/03/31/star_trek_sequel.html?cxntlid=thbz_hm

The hype is building for the new "Star Trek" film, set to open in theaters on May 8: http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/04/22/star.trek.screening.room/index.html

This article states that early reviews of the film, courtesy of advance screenings, have generally been very positive. As for me, I'll withhold any judgment until I've seen the film, which I plan to do in a theater. winky

Ree Hines, an MSNBC.com contributing writer, explains why there is only one real Captain James T. Kirk, the one played by William Shatner: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30521500/

An interesting article. I generally agree. Chris Pine, who portrays James Kirk in the new "Star Trek" film, no doubt has done a good job in the role but in the grand "Trek" scheme of things, and long after the last ST film has been made, those of us fans of ST who look back at this franchise will, I think, feel that William Shatner was the guy who forever endeared the character of "James T. Kirk" to the hearts and minds of Trek fans. winky

Though I'm not sure about Pine yet
Regardless of how critics, and fans, receive Chris Pine as "Captain Kirk" this young man has IMO done a good job in both presenting himself as an actor and also as an "ambassador" to the ST franchise. Chris Pine, as has been reported by the media, wrote William Shatner(during the shooting of the film) several letters assuring him he understood the significance of the "Kirk" character and also the importance of the character to ST fans, as well as asking Shatner for any advice he might have on playing the role of "Kirk".

That showed class on the part of Chris Pine, something Shatner alluded to when he talked(on his blog) about writing back to Pine and simply telling the young actor to be himself in the role.

The technology used in the "Star Trek" films may not be as far off as you might think: http://tech.msn.com/products/slideshow.aspx?cp-documentid=19523950&Gt1=40000

Went and saw Star Trek at the 7:00 showing last night. Here's what I thought.

This review pretty closely mirrors my opinion of the film.

http://www.worstpreviews.com/review.php?id=450&section=review

Overall, I think it's not as deep or though-provoking as previous Trek. But it is one hell of a ride. For the most part, I thought they got the characters right. Chris Pine made an excellent Kirk, much to my surprise. Quinto made a fine Spock. And Karl Urban was an absolutely amazing McCoy. I liked the other characters, but those were the three I was mainly worried about.

I liked all the classic sound effects. It made it feel a lot more like the original series.

The score didn't really impress me on album, though I liked its somewhat retro feel. But it works really well with the film itself. I could have used more references to earlier Trek themes, though Like more of the Alexander Courage themes and the Spock theme first heard in Horner's Wrath of Khan.

It was an absolute joy to see Nimoy as Spock again. He was perfect. For a Star Trek fan, that has to be the greatest thing about the film.
Spoiler: click to toggle

There were a few really major events in the film that would make any Trekkie sweat. They worked in the film's favor, but I was still very disappointed to see
Spoiler: click to toggle

Ben Cross was sufficient as Sarek. But he's really one of the weakest re-castings in the film. The original Sarek, as played by Mark Lenard, was much better suited to the part.

The humor works surprisingly well in this film. Most of the jokes were genuinely funny and fit with the characters.

It's still disconcerting to have to switch over to an alternate timeline, having invested so much of my life in the original timeline, but I think the movie is mostly a success. There are countless nods to the original shows and movies that only a Trekkie will appreciate. By the end of the movie, I felt like the writers and yes, even J.J. Abrams, had worked very hard to make me, as a Trekkie, happy with the film. It stays fairly true to what has come before while also re-energizing the franchise.

While the movie didn't focus very much on "boldly going where no one has gone before," we are given the impression that this movie is just the beginning. And that there will be plenty of time to explore strange new worlds in future installments. I hope that this means that the next film will be a bit more intelligent, but no less fun.

8/10

I saw JJ Abrams' STAR TREK last night and I absolutely loved it. All of the cast--and I mean ALL of them--were absolutely brilliant. I especially enjoyed Karl Urban's performance as Dr. McCoy. I'd swear that man was channeling DeForest Kelley. It was incredible.

The special effects, as expect, were amazing. I love the new Warp effect. The rapid-fire effect for the phasers were great and the space scenery was incredible. Love the shot of the new spacedock and assorted Federation starships.

The film was so much more than action and effects. The character moments were wonderful. The scenes between Kirk and the original Spock were touching. Kirk and McCoy were as comical and endearing as ever. Uhura and Sulu were more important and prominent than ever before. Sulu was a badass! Surprisingly, I was also amused by Anton Yelchin's performance as Chekov. He was downright funny, but not the point of being obnoxious.

If you were to ask me a couple of years ago if anyone could replace William Shatner as Captain Kirk I'd say "no", but Chris Pine was fantastic. Without mimicking Shatner he made James T Kirk his own. Just watch the "Kobayashi Maru" sequence for a serious geek out cool Kirk moment.

I was also touched, and elated, to see the return of what feels like an old friend...Leonard Nimoy's return as Spock. He was as incredible as ever and the end of the film has given his character new meaning and an important role in this "new" TOS timeline.

This movie was HUUUUUGE, in my view. There were so many staggering events that occurred in this film that, for spoilers sake, I shouldn't get into but the events in this film MATTERED.

STAR TREK was simply an incredible film worthy of all the praise it's been getting from critics and fans alike.

The wife and I saw it last night also, and we both loved it! I agree with you Pack on every level. Pine and Urban's performances were simply great. And the relationship between Spock and Uhura is pretty cool also. (and caught us completely off guard) I'm not gonna say much more that Pack hasn't covered already, except that this movie is a must see for Trekkies and non Trekkies alike. A great Star Trek movie!

There is one sequence of this video where Leonard Nimoy says goodbye to the film crew and director J.J. Abrams after Nimoy's sequences were shot: it was kind of sad and Mr. Nimoy was understandably a little emotional about it. Watching Nimoy's parting words to the the others only confirmed what I have known for a long, long time: this man is not only a marvelous actor but also a class act. thumbz up

Well from what I've heard, Nimoy is returning for the next Star Trek movie, which would be totally awesome. I hope he does. It's also rumored that the next Star Trek movie would end with a cliffhanger and then it would continue with the next movie. I'm totally up for that.

As big a Star Trek fan that I consider myself to be, I still haven't seen every episode of the original series. So lately I've been watching some of the episodes that I've missed and some of my favorites in the remastered format, with the updated effects and sound. I will always consider the original versions to be the REAL versions. But I admit to enjoying seeing these remastered updates. They make the episodes feel kind of fresh again.

Oh, I totally agree. Barbara Luna was a gorgeous woman back then.

Just recently I saw her in an episode of The Invaders, and she's pretty hot there too.

Star Trek: The Original Series was full of beautiful babes. My favorites...

Sherry Jackson. She played two characters in two different episodes, but I think she was hotter in "What Are Little Girls Made Of", as Andrea.

Not from Star Trek, but still hot.
Posted Image

I think she was even hotter in the Lost in Space episode "The Space Croppers", as Effra. The Hillbilly routine made her character kind of irritating, but that doesn't really detract from her beauty. She was just playing a role.

And then there is Marianna Hill as Dr. Helen Noel in "Dagger of the Mind."

Also worth mentioning are...

Sally Kellerman(Dr. Elizabeth Dehner in "Where No Man Has Gone Before")
Jill Ireland(Leila Kalomi in "This Side of Paradise")
Joan Collins(Edith Keeler in "City on the Edge of Forever")

But I have not yet mentioned my favorite babe from the original series. She is, in my opinion, the most beautiful woman from the original show.

Madlyn Rhue, as Lieutenant Marla McGivers in "Space Seed."

I forgot all about Marianna Hill: she was a hottie! tongue-1

Ted Cassidy...now that was one scary looking dude. freak out

My favorite hotties from the original ST series would have to be Barbara Luna, Sherry Jackson, Marianna Hill and also Yvonne Craig, the latter the green skinned gal from the episode "For Whom Gods Destroy". Nichelle Nichols looked damn good in her own right, especially in that outfit in the season two episode "Mirror, Mirror".

I also liked the young lady who played the Vulcan female Spock was supposed to mate with in season two's "Amok Time".

My current top ten favorite ST episodes from the original series:

  • The Ultimate Computer
    The Gamesters Of Triskelion
    Devil In The Dark
    Amok Time
    Mirror, Mirror
    The Galileo Seven
    Arena
    Shore Leave
    Journey To Babel
    Operation: Annihilate!

Here's a post from a ST message board with an image of "Marta"(Yvonne Craig) from the season three episode called "For Whom Gods Destroy": http://www.startrekmovie.com/forums/showpost.php?p=103257&postcount=57

Here's a blogger who has posted images of all the famous original ST series women: http://eeknight.livejournal.com/341538.html

I did see a pic of a young Sally Kellerman in this blog: she looked great! tongue-2

One of the reasons why I believe the original ST series remains the best among all of these shows is the portrayal of these characters, and the writing. The original series managed to make me care about these characters a lot, as well as marvel at their ability to overcome repeated problems and situations, usually relying on each other. These characters all "had each others back", so to speak. The relationship between the "big three", Kirk Spock and McCoy, has IMO never been duplicated in any other ST television series, especially that of Spock and Dr. Leonard McCoy. Here's a clip from the episode "Bread And Circuses", a clip that illustrates the relationship between these two men:

I couldn't agree with you more. I like, to varying degrees, all the Star Trek shows. But the original series will always be the best. The characters were just so likable and admirable. TNG comes close, but none of the other crews can beat the original.

Obsession is a good one. I should watch that one again in the remastered format.

Seasons 1 and 2 are definitely the best. Season 3 has the most bad episodes I think. Not sure what happened there.

Maybe after I re-watch all the episodes I want to see, and watch all the episodes I've never seen, I can make a top 10 favorites list.

From the descriptions I've read of the original ST series seasons, there has been mention that the writers of this series were finding it more difficult to come up with interesting story lines for the eps: Spock's Brain is an example of this, an episode which is generally regarded by "Trekkies" as being one of the worst, if not worst, episodes of the original series. There were some good episodes in season three, like Day Of The Dove, but I think it simply came down to the show writers running out of ideas that would translate into fresh and interesting story lines, which would obviously be a necessity for the survival and continuation of any television show. This happens to many TV series, obviously some sooner than later. Based on declining TV ratings, NBC abruptly cancelled Star Trek in 1969.

Believe it or not, Gregg the original ST series never really garnered outstanding TV ratings. It was only after this show went into syndication, and began making the rounds on channels like The Sci-Fi Channel and others, did it gain such an enormous following of fans.

Oh yeah. So I've heard. Mainly it wasn't successful in the beginning because they put it in the wrong time slot. It came on too late in the evening, so kids didn't get to see it. And so it wasn't until the re-runs that the target audience got to see it.

I heard that there was a big fan petition to get the show renewed after season 2, and because of fan's efforts it got a third season. So it seems as though it did have a cult fan base at least.

I think the best episodes from season 3, that I've seen anyway, are...

The Enterprise Incident
Is There No Truth in Beauty
Spectre of the Gun
Day of the Dove
The Tholian Web
Wink of an Eye
The Savage Curtain
