In 1966 Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future of our Earth and space travel was realized when the television series Star Trek first aired on NBC. Set in the 23rd century, circa 2278, Earth is now a member of an intergalactic alliance called the United Federation Of Planets, and employs a fleet of starships, manned by uniformed officers and enlisted, both human and alien, to operate them. The first TV series, named Star Trek, chronicles the five year voyage of the Constitution-class starship Enterprise, captained by James Tiberius Kirk(played by William Shatner, and including the exec/science officer Spock, a Vulcan(played by Leonard Nimoy), and the medical officer(and Kirk's pal) Leonard McCoy(played by the late DeForest Kelly). The other primary cast members include the Chief Engineer, Montgomery Scott(played by the late James Doohan), the Communications officer, Uhura(played by Nichelle Nichols), the helmsman/asst science officer Pavel Chekhov(played by Walter Koenig), and lastly, the helmsman/navigator Sulu(played by George Takei). The ratings for Star Trek were always a bit shaky, despite the interesting episodes and plethora of alien species that were often featured. After the series went off the air in 1969, a long run of TV syndication would begin with this show, and it still appears today on the Sci-Fi channel from time to time. The first series was followed by other ST television series: Star Trek-The Next Generation, Star Trek-Deep Space Nine, Star Trek-Voyager, and Enterprise. There have also been ten(10) ST films on the big screen, all featuring the casts from the original series or from that of ST-TNG. Next up: a ST film in 2008, the rumor being that the plot will involve a young James T. Kirk and Spock, together in their first adventure. Talk about all things "Star Trek" here. All replies welcome.

Watched the remastered version of Man Trap last night. Always been one of my favorite episodes. Noticed Alfred Ryder was in it. He was excellent in the three episodes of The Invaders that he was in.

I watched That Which Survives earlier tonight on YouTube, a season three ST episode from the original series. Lee Meriwether was in this episode, portraying "Losira". I forgot what a beautiful woman she was. She was Miss America 1955 and also starred as "Catwoman" in an at least one episode of the 1966 "Batman" TV series.

A ST TOS season two episode, called "A Private Little War": http://www.imdb.com/video/cbs/vi2168782873/

Nancy Kovak plays "Nona" in this episode. She was a hottie! You'll also see, Gregg a very cool looking creature called the "Mugato", a white, ape like creature.

Ah yes. Good episode. Supposedly the Mugato was the inspiration for the Mugato character in Zoolander.

Here's my question to you, Gregg: if you were a crew member on a starship in Starfleet and the ship was in a perilous predicament...which captain would you want on the bridge dealing with the situation: James T. Kirk or Jean Luc Picard?

I think that if it were more of a dangerous combat situation; an un-winnable battle, I would want Captain Kirk to be there. There's no such thing as an un-winnable battle for him. I'd feel secure knowing that he would figure out some way of getting us out of there alive.

However, if it were more of a dangerous political situation, I would probably go for Picard. He's more of a diplomat, and he's just the man I'd want negotiating with powerful aliens.

So I guess it would depend on the situation. Kirk is pretty much unstoppable. But Picard is a bit more responsible. He'd be more likely to not let his ego get in the way of his morals, which could result in his saving more lives overall. Tough call. Tough call.

But honestly, I think I would still go with Kirk. He's a lot more likely to try something, anything, no matter how crazy it is. He would definitely do something immediately. And it will usually work.

Gregg, who do you consider the better First Officer, overall: CDR Spock from TOS or Commander William Riker from ST-TNG? And why?

As much as I like Riker, Spock wins. He's superior in just about every way. He's extremely intelligent(much more so than any human), strong, wise, and perfectly willing to sacrifice himself in defense of the ship and its crew. He doesn't let his emotions cloud his judgment, and he will go up against the captain if necessary.

Riker deserves plenty of credit, though. As we've seen in the war games episode of TNG, he is a master of taking limited resources and defeating a highly superior foe. As Worf would put it, he has an abundance of "guile." He's a deeply human individual. Tough. Strong. Morally unwavering. But he can't really stand up to Spock.

On a separate note, I've been looking at the Blu-ray releases of seasons 1 and 2 of the original series, and man do they look awesome. I don't have a blu-ray player yet, or an HD television, but I'm very tempted to just buy these box sets anyway. I love that they've made it so you can easily switch between the remastered and original versions as you watch an episode. And I love that in the season 2 box set, they've included the "Trials and Tribble-ations" episode from Star Trek: DS9. Hopefully it's in high-def. That's one of my absolute favorite episodes from DS9. Anyone who is a fan of the "Trouble With Tribbles" episode from the original series would enjoy it. They do an amazing job of putting the DS9 crew right in the middle of the episode.

I've seen that season five DS9 episode you refer to, Gregg in which Sisko and a few others from DS9 travel back in time to 2268. Captain Ben Sisko was an admitted huge fan of James Kirk. He also commented on how successful Kirk was with the ladies. ( tongue-1 ) The scene where Sisko actually meets Kirk briefly on the bridge was awesome. thumbz up

Watched Charlie X for the first time ever today. There were a couple of odd scenes that felt out of place compared to the rest of the show, but overall it was a good episode.

ok so I'm a little late getting to this thread
I love the original series It was done on a low budget so it has that "B" movie feel. They reused props and sets for different episodes I just love it
Kirk's classic drop kick in a fight. T obvious stunt doubles . All make this series so great. Also the naming of characters Mr Atoz the librarian in "All Our Yesterdays", Dr Helen Noel in "Dagger of the Mind" Where she had a fling with Kirk at the Christmas party. This is great stuff in my mind . I'll always be a fan of this series
I love trek and like all the series My only problem was Enterprise is ****ed around with the Trek time line too much I think that's why it didn't last long .

I would be in favor of seeing the character "Khan" in another ST film, perhaps the third installment...but not the sequel to the Abrams directed film. I'd rather see a story line of some kind in the sequel we haven't seen before in any previous ST movies.

oops sorry I read the post wrong
I'm not in favor of it it will ruin the trek time line Kirk never met Kahn till they found the Botany Bay floating in space. He didnt know who he was right away . I think its a big mistake unless they are redoing the wrath of Kahn then its even a bigger mistake

But, this isn't our fathers Star Trek. The nice thing about rebooting a popular movie series is that they can go in different directions. Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan, is, in my opinion, the best of the Star Trek movies. But I have faith in Abrams, Orci, and Kurtzman if they want to add Khan to ST2. Plus, with the alternate timeline/reality that was set up in this Star Trek, they can go in many directions and use many different ideas. Khan, Klingons, etc.

Essentially, yes. I bought a PS3 a couple of months ago, partially because it can play Blu-rays, and partially so I could play the Uncharted games. I've also got a 1080p monitor to use with it. But I haven't watched any Blu-ray movies yet on it.
