I've wanted a new show for a while, but I was hoping it would take place on the Titan with Captain Riker.

I feel pretty much the same as the author. I'm trying to be as optimistic as possible about the new movie, but I'm just not sure yet. It could be amazing, or it could be a disaster.

If you're like me, a guy always looking to smell good for the ladies when at a Trekkie convention, then you should absolutely click this link: http://www.accessatlanta.com/entertainment/content/entertainment/stories/2009/03/25/star_trek_cologne.html?cxntlid=thbz_hm

Haha, yeah I'd heard about that on some of the Trek sites. I wonder what Star Trek cologne is even supposed to smell like? Kirk's manly sweat? Klingon body odor? Orion pheromones?

I came across this link, which has six(6) great international posters of the upcoming ST film on display(as clickable thumbnails): http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00023075.html

Some of the international posters are great, although I wish they had more Bones in them.

But the final theatrical poster is crap. The one with the white blurred Enterprise. Can't believe that one got approved.

Despite the fact the new "Star Trek" film directed by J.J. Abrams has yet to hit theaters, Paramount is already committed to a sequel to this film: http://www.accessatlanta.com/movies/content/movies/stories/2009/03/31/star_trek_sequel.html?cxntlid=thbz_hm

The hype is building for the new "Star Trek" film, set to open in theaters on May 8: http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/04/22/star.trek.screening.room/index.html

This article states that early reviews of the film, courtesy of advance screenings, have generally been very positive. As for me, I'll withhold any judgment until I've seen the film, which I plan to do in a theater. winky

Ree Hines, an MSNBC.com contributing writer, explains why there is only one real Captain James T. Kirk, the one played by William Shatner: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/30521500/

An interesting article. I generally agree. Chris Pine, who portrays James Kirk in the new "Star Trek" film, no doubt has done a good job in the role but in the grand "Trek" scheme of things, and long after the last ST film has been made, those of us fans of ST who look back at this franchise will, I think, feel that William Shatner was the guy who forever endeared the character of "James T. Kirk" to the hearts and minds of Trek fans. winky

Though I'm not sure about Pine yet
Regardless of how critics, and fans, receive Chris Pine as "Captain Kirk" this young man has IMO done a good job in both presenting himself as an actor and also as an "ambassador" to the ST franchise. Chris Pine, as has been reported by the media, wrote William Shatner(during the shooting of the film) several letters assuring him he understood the significance of the "Kirk" character and also the importance of the character to ST fans, as well as asking Shatner for any advice he might have on playing the role of "Kirk".

That showed class on the part of Chris Pine, something Shatner alluded to when he talked(on his blog) about writing back to Pine and simply telling the young actor to be himself in the role.

The technology used in the "Star Trek" films may not be as far off as you might think: http://tech.msn.com/products/slideshow.aspx?cp-documentid=19523950&Gt1=40000

Went and saw Star Trek at the 7:00 showing last night. Here's what I thought.

This review pretty closely mirrors my opinion of the film.

http://www.worstpreviews.com/review.php?id=450&section=review

Overall, I think it's not as deep or though-provoking as previous Trek. But it is one hell of a ride. For the most part, I thought they got the characters right. Chris Pine made an excellent Kirk, much to my surprise. Quinto made a fine Spock. And Karl Urban was an absolutely amazing McCoy. I liked the other characters, but those were the three I was mainly worried about.

I liked all the classic sound effects. It made it feel a lot more like the original series.

The score didn't really impress me on album, though I liked its somewhat retro feel. But it works really well with the film itself. I could have used more references to earlier Trek themes, though Like more of the Alexander Courage themes and the Spock theme first heard in Horner's Wrath of Khan.

It was an absolute joy to see Nimoy as Spock again. He was perfect. For a Star Trek fan, that has to be the greatest thing about the film.

There were a few really major events in the film that would make any Trekkie sweat. They worked in the film's favor, but I was still very disappointed to see

Ben Cross was sufficient as Sarek. But he's really one of the weakest re-castings in the film. The original Sarek, as played by Mark Lenard, was much better suited to the part.

The humor works surprisingly well in this film. Most of the jokes were genuinely funny and fit with the characters.

It's still disconcerting to have to switch over to an alternate timeline, having invested so much of my life in the original timeline, but I think the movie is mostly a success. There are countless nods to the original shows and movies that only a Trekkie will appreciate. By the end of the movie, I felt like the writers and yes, even J.J. Abrams, had worked very hard to make me, as a Trekkie, happy with the film. It stays fairly true to what has come before while also re-energizing the franchise.

While the movie didn't focus very much on "boldly going where no one has gone before," we are given the impression that this movie is just the beginning. And that there will be plenty of time to explore strange new worlds in future installments. I hope that this means that the next film will be a bit more intelligent, but no less fun.

8/10

I saw JJ Abrams' STAR TREK last night and I absolutely loved it. All of the cast--and I mean ALL of them--were absolutely brilliant. I especially enjoyed Karl Urban's performance as Dr. McCoy. I'd swear that man was channeling DeForest Kelley. It was incredible.

The special effects, as expect, were amazing. I love the new Warp effect. The rapid-fire effect for the phasers were great and the space scenery was incredible. Love the shot of the new spacedock and assorted Federation starships.

The film was so much more than action and effects. The character moments were wonderful. The scenes between Kirk and the original Spock were touching. Kirk and McCoy were as comical and endearing as ever. Uhura and Sulu were more important and prominent than ever before. Sulu was a badass! Surprisingly, I was also amused by Anton Yelchin's performance as Chekov. He was downright funny, but not the point of being obnoxious.

If you were to ask me a couple of years ago if anyone could replace William Shatner as Captain Kirk I'd say "no", but Chris Pine was fantastic. Without mimicking Shatner he made James T Kirk his own. Just watch the "Kobayashi Maru" sequence for a serious geek out cool Kirk moment.

I was also touched, and elated, to see the return of what feels like an old friend...Leonard Nimoy's return as Spock. He was as incredible as ever and the end of the film has given his character new meaning and an important role in this "new" TOS timeline.

This movie was HUUUUUGE, in my view. There were so many staggering events that occurred in this film that, for spoilers sake, I shouldn't get into but the events in this film MATTERED.

STAR TREK was simply an incredible film worthy of all the praise it's been getting from critics and fans alike.
