In 1966 Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future of our Earth and space travel was realized when the television series Star Trek first aired on NBC. Set in the 23rd century, circa 2278, Earth is now a member of an intergalactic alliance called the United Federation Of Planets, and employs a fleet of starships, manned by uniformed officers and enlisted, both human and alien, to operate them. The first TV series, named Star Trek, chronicles the five year voyage of the Constitution-class starship Enterprise, captained by James Tiberius Kirk(played by William Shatner, and including the exec/science officer Spock, a Vulcan(played by Leonard Nimoy), and the medical officer(and Kirk's pal) Leonard McCoy(played by the late DeForest Kelly). The other primary cast members include the Chief Engineer, Montgomery Scott(played by the late James Doohan), the Communications officer, Uhura(played by Nichelle Nichols), the helmsman/asst science officer Pavel Chekhov(played by Walter Koenig), and lastly, the helmsman/navigator Sulu(played by George Takei). The ratings for Star Trek were always a bit shaky, despite the interesting episodes and plethora of alien species that were often featured. After the series went off the air in 1969, a long run of TV syndication would begin with this show, and it still appears today on the Sci-Fi channel from time to time. The first series was followed by other ST television series: Star Trek-The Next Generation, Star Trek-Deep Space Nine, Star Trek-Voyager, and Enterprise. There have also been ten(10) ST films on the big screen, all featuring the casts from the original series or from that of ST-TNG. Next up: a ST film in 2008, the rumor being that the plot will involve a young James T. Kirk and Spock, together in their first adventure. Talk about all things "Star Trek" here. All replies welcome. Thread starter: Packmule's favorite ST television series: the original 1966 series Favorite Captain: James T. Kimi, any chance your rating for this film might improve if you saw Star Trek: The Motion Picture(1979)-The Director's Edition? It's the DVD I have. It includes extra footage, and the print has been remastered(upgraded). eyebrow Click the link for more info on this DVD: "ST: The Motion Picture" Director's Edition DVD |

Lee, it very well could.....I just thought the few times I watched this on my VHS, that it was trying too hard to be very 'Star Wars' in look or feel. Star Trek the TV series did a nice job of combining sci-fi/action-adventure and even a wee bit of humor in the original series and in the first film, I just kind of felt the film was taking itself far too serious. The cast didn't appear as relaxed in their roles as in future films or as in the TV series. I'll look for the 'Director's Edition' and see if that improves my take. It's been several years and perhaps I was just being too critical, too! |

I have been watching episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise. Last night: The Andorian Incident. The Andorians are cool looking aliens, what with their blue skin, white hair and antennae above their forehead. They are also war-like, much like the Klingons. Just ask Captain Archer, who got roughed up pretty good by the Andorians in this episode. I thought it was great what Archer did at the end of this episode, giving Trann(the Andorian leader) all the info on the Vulcan's secret underground spy base(the Vulcans have been, as we find out, spying on their planetary neighbors the Andorians). Image: a pair of Andorians and Captain Jonathan Archer-from Star Trek: Enterprise. Trann(at left in front of Archer)) is played by Jeffrey Combs. Captain Archer is played by Scott Bakula. |

In the original ST series season two episode The Gamesters Of Triskelion Kirk, near the end of the episode, must fight multiple opponents, including an Andorian. In another season two episode, Journey To Babel, Kirk is attacked by an Orion surgically altered to look like an Andorian. Kirk won the fight but not before his attacker stabbed him in the side, forcing him to sick bay and Spock taking temporary command of the Enterprise. |

I'm curious, Kimi, as to who you would cast in the next ST film, purportedly about a young Jim Kirk and Spock at Starfleet Academy and their first adventure together. There has been rumor that Matt Damon will play "Kirk", but nothing of the sort about who would play a younger "Spock". confused |

Matt Damon is rumored to be the next "Kirk"-I can roll with this as I believe Damon to be a very good actor. The character of "Spock" would have to played by someone taller, dark-haired, and possessing a slender build(like Leonard Nimoy in the original series). How about Freddie Prinze, Jr? confused |

This was posted by "Ro-Dan" over at the "Planet X" site-some comments from the people involved in the making of the upcoming eleventh Star Trek film: "Trek XI" Writers Talk, Drop Hints The title of the eleventh film in the Star Trek franchise may simply be "Star Trek," and it's being considered more a reimagining than a prequel, the writers of the project revealed in an interview posted today on MTV.com. They also promised that the story will be a starship-based adventure with more action and a bigger budget than any previous "Trek" film. Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci — the two screenwriters who also serve as executive producers — told MTV that "Star Trek" by itself is their intended title. "I don't think we want to put any colons or anything on it," Orci said. This detail about the "Star Trek XI" project is still up in the air, though, where the studio is concerned, and likely to be subject to change until the last minute. The article contends that Kurtzman and Orci described the film as "not in any way a prequel but a reimagining of the franchise," without quoting them directly saying that. The article does quote Orci as saying, "We're not going to start totally from scratch." But, "We want it to feel like it's updated and of the now. That's actually the discussions we're having now: how to keep the look of the universe yet have it not look like nothing's new. It's tricky." The writers did promise that this movie will contain more action than any "Trek" film that has preceded it, and said it will have the biggest budget. Apparently Paramount gave them no stipulations and no limits. "They were just like, what would you do with 'Star Trek'?" Orci recalled. "We've been watching [Trek] all our lives. I've even read the books. It was all about, what have I always wanted to see in Trek?" Orci also said, "The economic models of the other [films] were very much based on the fans out there and their purchasing power. With this one we're going for the broad audience to bring people into Trek for the first time." Kurtzman added, "The challenge of the movie is to be 100 percent true to the fanbase but also to bring in a whole new group of people who've never seen Trek before." But they were still mum on the details of the story, or which characters will appear in it, deflecting such questions from the interviewer with a persistent "Who can say?" But they did allow that it will be a starship-based adventure. "I don't know how you make Star Trek without a starship," Orci laughed. "You have to trek through the stars, so you need a ship for that. There, you got something out of us!" Kurtzman said the same thing about the oft-maligned "technobabble" staple of Trek scripts. "I actually love the technobabble!" Kurtzman said. "I don't think you can do Trek without technobabble." Without discussing why, Kurtzman and Orci revealed that they and producer J.J. Abrams did recently visit with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. "It was pretty much the most stressful thing ever, but it was wonderful," Kurtzman said. "They were amazing." While apparently describing the film as a "reimagining," the writers do believe their script adheres to the original vision of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. "Trek, more than anything, has always been about the human interactions," Orci said. "It's all about the human soul." "And the friendships," Kurtzman added. "And everyone being a family. Whatever the story was, we always knew what it had to feel like." The pair expressed relief that Abrams decided to direct the movie after reading the very first draft. "When we finally turned in the script I started lining up other directors, and that really got [Abrams] going," Orci joked. As for other crew members, the article cited Scott Chambliss as production designer and Daniel Mindel as director of photography, who worked with Kurtzman, Orci and Abrams on Alias and "Mission: Impossible III." On recent rumors regarding casting of key roles, the writer/producers were very coy, only saying things like, "We never said Bones was in it." Kurtzman did admit, "I'm the hugest Matt Damon fan ever. If he became [Kirk], great." |

The TV series or film series, Lee? Once I complete the original TV series on DVD, I wouldn't mind adding some or all of, The Next Generation to my collection, but that's the only other TV series I ever warmed up to in the ST universe. As for the ST films, I very much enjoyed the original crew's film adventures and would definitely like to get them. |

I've recently bought all of the ST movies on DVD. I've got season one of the original series on order from Amazon for only $40! Kimi, I too only warmed up to TNG. I really don't care for the later series like Ds9, Voyager, and Enterprise. However, instead of spending a ton of money on TNG box sets might I suggest the Fan Collective DVD sets? There are currently four available: Klingon, Borg, Q, and Time Travel. So far I have the Klingon set (which collects most of the Worf/Klingon saga from Next Gen and Borg which includes the awesome two-parter "The Best of Both Worlds". |

I saw this article this AM and thought it was kind of cool. Several grams of the late James Doohan's ashes are to be sent into space via rocket later this month. Doohan, who played Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott, aka "Scotty", on the original Star Trek series(1966-1969), died in July of 2005 at the age of 85. The link to this article: Beam Me Up Scotty |
