In 1966 Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future of our Earth and space travel was realized when the television series Star Trek first aired on NBC. Set in the 23rd century, circa 2278, Earth is now a member of an intergalactic alliance called the United Federation Of Planets, and employs a fleet of starships, manned by uniformed officers and enlisted, both human and alien, to operate them. The first TV series, named Star Trek, chronicles the five year voyage of the Constitution-class starship Enterprise, captained by James Tiberius Kirk(played by William Shatner, and including the exec/science officer Spock, a Vulcan(played by Leonard Nimoy), and the medical officer(and Kirk's pal) Leonard McCoy(played by the late DeForest Kelly). The other primary cast members include the Chief Engineer, Montgomery Scott(played by the late James Doohan), the Communications officer, Uhura(played by Nichelle Nichols), the helmsman/asst science officer Pavel Chekhov(played by Walter Koenig), and lastly, the helmsman/navigator Sulu(played by George Takei). The ratings for Star Trek were always a bit shaky, despite the interesting episodes and plethora of alien species that were often featured. After the series went off the air in 1969, a long run of TV syndication would begin with this show, and it still appears today on the Sci-Fi channel from time to time. The first series was followed by other ST television series: Star Trek-The Next Generation, Star Trek-Deep Space Nine, Star Trek-Voyager, and Enterprise. There have also been ten(10) ST films on the big screen, all featuring the casts from the original series or from that of ST-TNG. Next up: a ST film in 2008, the rumor being that the plot will involve a young James T. Kirk and Spock, together in their first adventure. Talk about all things "Star Trek" here. All replies welcome. Thread starter: Packmule's favorite ST television series: the original 1966 series Favorite Captain: James T. Kirk Favorite alien species: the Andorians Favorite "Enterprise": the Galaxy-class vessel from ST-TNG Favorite babe from ST- T'Pol(played by Jolene Blalock) from Enterprise ![]() Pictured: a montage of the great Starfleet Captains: James Kirk, Jean-Luc Picard, Kathryn Janeway, and Ben Sisco |

Even though it's been a given STAR TREK XI producer/director JJ Abrams officially confirms James T Kirk will be in the new film. SOURCE Also, the producers are really pushing for simply naming the next film STAR TREK. I really hope Paramount goes for that simple title. Given what we know about this film (the early days of Kirk in Spock just before or during the TOS era) no subtitles or numbering will be necessary. |

Well, I look forward to more updates on the new ST film as they are released. I also think simply naming this film "Star Trek" could work. I like the idea of Matt Damon in the role of James Kirk. As for the others, I'm not sure. The role of Spock should be a coveted gig, Dan. Any idea who might be good as Spock? eyebrow |

The rumor (and please bear in mind, only RUMOR) that Adrian Brody is in the running for Spock. However, the rumor that has me jazzed up is Gary Sinise as Doctor McCoy. He'd be perfect as a younger Bones. |

You don't like the Adrian Brody rumor, Lee? I'm apathetic to it. I really want the Gary Sinise rumor to be true, however. I know Matt Damon's name is thrown around a lot in regard to James Kirk but I would rather they go with an unknown for that part. Otherwise it'll just be a name celebrity impersonating Shatner. Besides, if they pick stars who are really big names (a la Damon) who's to say that they'll return for a sequel? |

No, not really. I have nothing against Adrien Brody, but I just think there might be better actors suited to play Spock. Besides, he's got a funny looking nose. I'm okay with an "unknown" actor as well, if that's what Abrams wants to do. Indeed, that's a risk you run if you sign on a big name actor.

Thanks. The picture of the "trinity" was so cool I had to make it my signature. I'm a huge fan of the original series. Pretty cool that Paramount has decided to go back and revisit those characters with their next film. |

I'm surprised for two reasons: 1) I didn't know there was a "science fiction Hall of Fame" and 2) I find it hard to believe Roddenberry wasn't already inducted. |

confused So do I Dan. Roddenberry created, arguably, the most universally popular science fiction television series in the world. I noticed that the Sci-Fi HOF is only eleven years old, founded in 1996. For a Hall Of Fame, that's relatively new. Perhaps this has something to do with it...or not. Here's more on the Science Fiction hall of Fame: Sci-Fi hall Of Fame Check out "Trek Nation's" website": Trek Nation |

It's almost hard to believe but twenty years have passed since Star Trek: The Next Generation first aired. Do you remember where you were, and what you were doing, when this show first came on television? I do. I was just discharged from the Navy and, after moving back to Atlanta from Charleston, SC, was living in a duplex, in a very old suburb of Atlanta called "Midtown", renting out one-half of it and lamenting the fact that my job, as a computer inventory technician for a textile sales company, didn't pay nearly as much as I wanted. My side of the duplex was sparsely furnished, and for entertainment I had to rely on a 19" color TV and a used VCR. At that time my tape collection numbered about twenty. I remember watching Encounter At Farpoint-Parts 1 and 2. My initial impressions, after watching this two-part pilot episode: Picard was too bald, Q was an asshole, and I seriously wanted to date Denise Crosby, who played Lt. Tasha Yar. As I watched more episodes I became hooked. I still like the original ST series the best, but this series carved out it's own niche just fine, and is my second favorite ST series. It has everything I look for in a "Star Trek" show: character-driven storylines, good acting, good special effects, a beautiful starship, and an outstanding captain to helm her. Here's an article by Larry Nemecek, who wrote a book about this television series, which ran for seven seasons from 1987-1994, and then continued for four more films, before finally ending it's great run, in 2002: Star Trek:The Next Generation and its' legacy My favorite ST-TNG episodes, in no particular order: Heart Of Glory Skin Of Evil Where Silence Has Lease The High Ground A Fistful Of Datas The Best Of Both Worlds-Pts. 1 and 2 I, Borg Q Who? Darmok Sarek Loud As A Whisper The Pegasus The Icarus Factor Galaxy Child Redemption Pts. 1 and 2 Coming Of Age Night Terrors |

Wow, 20 years ago!? I was working second shift and not getting to watch anything new, too much. I do recall catching TNG and having some mixed feelings about the series.....always tough not to 'compare' any series to an original, but I thought it had promise. I thought the series became much better with each passing year and while I can't tell you any of the episode titles other than one, I thought the one episode I do know the title of was a wonderful one. The Host. thumbs up |

Here's an update, of sorts, on the new Star Trek movie, now planned to be released, theatrically, around Christmas of 2008. Rumors continue to abound that the director of this film, J.J. Abrams, would like to see Matt Damon play the role of Captain James T. Kirk, and the rumor is Damon is in talks with Abrams for the role. Actors allegedly being considered for the role of Vulcan science officer Spock include Adrien Brody, who IMO is a very good actor, and Ben Affleck, who IMO is not. Other casting rumors include: Gary Sinise playing Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy, James McAvoy playing engineer Montgomery Scott, and "Lost" actor Daniel Dae Kim in the role of Sulu. The director, J.J. Abrams has, according to the article, consulted with William Shatner, who immortalized the role of "Captain Kirk" in the 60's NBC television series, on casting Damon as the new "Kirk". Shatner has reportedly given his blessing to Matt Damon playing the character in the new film. Abrams also plans to consult with Leonard Nimoy about the casting of "Spock" as well. The article link: http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/preview/1809752800 The next Captain James T. Kirk? According to rumors it's going to be Matt Damon. I think he would be an excellent choice to play the role. He's young, cleancut, good looking, keeps himself in good physical condition, and lastly, he's a very good actor. thumbs up
