In 1966 Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future of our Earth and space travel was realized when the television series Star Trek first aired on NBC. Set in the 23rd century, circa 2278, Earth is now a member of an intergalactic alliance called the United Federation Of Planets, and employs a fleet of starships, manned by uniformed officers and enlisted, both human and alien, to operate them. The first TV series, named Star Trek, chronicles the five year voyage of the Constitution-class starship Enterprise, captained by James Tiberius Kirk(played by William Shatner, and including the exec/science officer Spock, a Vulcan(played by Leonard Nimoy), and the medical officer(and Kirk's pal) Leonard McCoy(played by the late DeForest Kelly). The other primary cast members include the Chief Engineer, Montgomery Scott(played by the late James Doohan), the Communications officer, Uhura(played by Nichelle Nichols), the helmsman/asst science officer Pavel Chekhov(played by Walter Koenig), and lastly, the helmsman/navigator Sulu(played by George Takei). The ratings for Star Trek were always a bit shaky, despite the interesting episodes and plethora of alien species that were often featured. After the series went off the air in 1969, a long run of TV syndication would begin with this show, and it still appears today on the Sci-Fi channel from time to time. The first series was followed by other ST television series: Star Trek-The Next Generation, Star Trek-Deep Space Nine, Star Trek-Voyager, and Enterprise. There have also been ten(10) ST films on the big screen, all featuring the casts from the original series or from that of ST-TNG. Next up: a ST film in 2008, the rumor being that the plot will involve a young James T. Kirk and Spock, together in their first adventure. Talk about all things "Star Trek" here. All replies welcome.

There's a rumor abound that Leonard Nimoy has been offered a cameo role in the next "Star Trek" film, but William Shatner has not. The link: http://www.trektoday.com/news/210607_01.shtml

If, and I emphasize the word "if", this turns out to be true, my reaction: shocking

It looks like the "Enterprise", NCC-1701 of the "Constitution" class, from the original ST series, will be returning for the upcoming Star Trek film in 2008, the visual effects for this movie to be handled by ILM(Industrial Light & Magic): http://www.trektoday.com/news/030707_01.shtml

Click the link to read a good commentary on the 1979 film Star Trek-The Motion Picture: http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/feat...le/2301143.html

I have seen this movie slammed for being overly long and for having plot "issues", and while I do not like it as much as it's sequel, Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan(1982), I still believe the first big screen ST film is great! I have the DVD of the director's edition, with the scenes that were not present in the original theatrical cut of the film.

While definitely not my favorite film, involving the original cast, I still enjoy it. The bit with the transporter accident freaked me out, big time. I think by the second film, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the cast semed more into their roles and it felt more like an extended episode, which I highly enjoyed. thumbs up

Which is what, I believe, the majority of ST fans were expecting, or looking for, from Star Trek: The Motion Picture(1979) and, I admit, didn't get-I didn't get that "episode" feel either, but I was looking for great visuals and an "epic" feel from ST TMP, which I got, even more so after watching the director's edition on DVD. I have seen this film described as being somewhat sterile. I can relate to to that to some degree.

I still need to pick these films up on disc. I think Wal*Mart offered them, last year for around, $7.50 each, which isn't bad at all. The films with the original cast that are my personal faves would be, parts II, III, IV, but I'd definitely watch themm all, again.

Posted today at Comcast.net: Leonard Nimoy will reprise, one more time, his role as "Spock" for the upcoming Star Trek film scheduled for theatrical release around Christmas of 2008. Click the link to see Nimoy greeting the actor who will portray the "young" Spock, Zachary Quinto: http://www.comcast.net/tv/index.jsp?cat=TE.../27/725092.html

According to the article William Shatner will also have some kind of role in the new ST film. There has been no official announcement, yet, on who will play the role of a young(er) James T. Kirk in this film.

Here's another link: http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/news...le/2303393.html

My reaction to Zachary Quinto being selected as the young "Spock": thumbs up

Hard to believe there is still no casting word on JAMES KIRK. I imagine Abrams and company are struggling to find the right actor for the part. Still, having Nimoy on board is essential, in my view. It gives this film a sense of legitimacy. If Nimoy vouches for it, than it truly is Star Trek.

Agreed. Leonard Nimoy even admitted that he doesn't usually publicly endorse films of any kind so when I read his statement of support regarding the eleventh ST film I was very encouraged. thumbs up

Scottish-born actor Paul McGillion continues to be mentioned for the role of "Montgomery Scott". McGillion, who can be seen in the TV series Stargate Atlantis, has said he would be honored to follow in the footsteps of a fellow Scot, the late James Doohan, and play the role of the Enterprises' Chief Engineer. "The Menagerie" on the Big Screen!

That's right, the only two-parter from the original STAR TREK television series will be playing in theaters for ONE NIGHT ONLY and in hi-def! Mark your calendars for November 13th. This will probably be our one and only chance to see an episode from the original series on the big screen!

BREAKING NEWS: Bana Cast as Villain in New Movie

Australian actor Eric Bana, best known for his role in "Munich,” will be playing a new villain called "Nero" in the J.J. Abrams-directed "Star Trek” movie, according to inside sources. Little else is known about this character, but based on Bana's past performances the Aussie hulk will make a fine antagonist.

Production is slated to begin next month at Paramount, with a release date of Christmas Day 2008.

Very cool news, in my opinion. I'm a big fan of Bana's and he'll be a great Trek villain.

The rumors continue to abound over just who will play James T. Kirk in the upcoming Star Trek film. Another actor is being mentioned as a possible candidate for the role: 27 year old actor Chris Pine, son of actor Robert Pine, who might be best known for his role as "Sgt. Getraer" on the 70's television series CHiPS. Click the link for more info: http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/news...le/2309773.html

Late edit(10-12-07): British actor Simon Pegg has been chosen to play the role of Chief Engineer "Montgomery Scott" in the eleventh ST film. Read more: http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/news...le/2310073.html

And actor Chris Pine has been confirmed for the role of Captain Kirk. With the soon-to-be casted Karl Urban as Doctor McCoy our new original seven cast is complete.

And J.J. Abrams, the director of the eleventh ST film, will have about $150 million to get this film made, according to insiders. I don't know about you Dan, but to me that's a hefty ass gamble by Paramount, who owns the rights to the ST film franchise. freak out

My reaction to Chris Pine being announced as the new James Kirk: okay. I don't know much about this actor so hopefully Abrams knows what he's doing.

My reaction to Karl Urban in the role of Leonard McCoy: shocked smiley I've seen Urban in various films. He's a capable actor so while I'm a little surprised by the choice here he should be able to pull off the role.

My reaction to the other cast announcements: thumbs up bravo clap

$150 million is the largest budget yet for a Trek film.

Pine looks A LOT like a young Kirk/Shatner. I like it.

Karl Urban as Dr McCoy? Waaay out of left field with that one.

I'm pleased with the cast. Everything I've read about STAR TREK so far has gotten me intrigued. Out of all the upcoming films next year this is the one that has me the most excited.

While I will continue to support the new "Trek" film and the ST franchise as a whole I believe J.J. Abrams, the director of the new ST movie, should be ashamed for not finding a way to get Shatner into this movie. thumbs down
