In 1966 Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future of our Earth and space travel was realized when the television series Star Trek first aired on NBC. Set in the 23rd century, circa 2278, Earth is now a member of an intergalactic alliance called the United Federation Of Planets, and employs a fleet of starships, manned by uniformed officers and enlisted, both human and alien, to operate them. The first TV series, named Star Trek, chronicles the five year voyage of the Constitution-class starship Enterprise, captained by James Tiberius Kirk(played by William Shatner, and including the exec/science officer Spock, a Vulcan(played by Leonard Nimoy), and the medical officer(and Kirk's pal) Leonard McCoy(played by the late DeForest Kelly). The other primary cast members include the Chief Engineer, Montgomery Scott(played by the late James Doohan), the Communications officer, Uhura(played by Nichelle Nichols), the helmsman/asst science officer Pavel Chekhov(played by Walter Koenig), and lastly, the helmsman/navigator Sulu(played by George Takei). The ratings for Star Trek were always a bit shaky, despite the interesting episodes and plethora of alien species that were often featured. After the series went off the air in 1969, a long run of TV syndication would begin with this show, and it still appears today on the Sci-Fi channel from time to time. The first series was followed by other ST television series: Star Trek-The Next Generation, Star Trek-Deep Space Nine, Star Trek-Voyager, and Enterprise. There have also been ten(10) ST films on the big screen, all featuring the casts from the original series or from that of ST-TNG. Next up: a ST film in 2008, the rumor being that the plot will involve a young James T. Kirk and Spock, together in their first adventure. Talk about all things "Star Trek" here. All replies welcome.

ok packmule here is a question for you
William Shatner wasn't the only actor to play Captain Kirk in STOS
who was the other actor?

...I'm not aware of any other actor playing "James Tiberius Kirk" in the original series besides William Shatner. Jeffrey Hunter played "Captain Christopher Pike" in the first pilot episode of this series, called The Cage. The second pilot episode introduced the cast regulars, including William Shatner as Captain Kirk.

I love every thing Star Trek I have to say it took me a long time to get into Enterprise. I am a STOS junkie. I did get to see it when it first aired but I was young then. Thank heaven for syndication I would watch it every night on wpix chanel 11 here in New York. I wish I could afford the DVD sets but at $100 a set its tough.I do have all the shows on vhs. Thank you pbs and fund raising drives. pbs showed all three seasons in order with out commercials. so I was able to tape them . tho they are edited.
What i really love about this series is the campyness and the way they reused sets. this series will always be my favorite.

my 10 favorite episodes not in any order
1 Devil in the Dark
2 Balance of Terror
3 wink of an Eye
4 The City on the Edge of Forever
5 Arena
6 The Corbomite Maneuver
7 The Squire of Gothos
8 Amok Time
9 The Omega Glory
10 Mirror, Mirror

I can watch STOS evceryday and not get tired of it Posted Image

Click the link and scroll down to see the new teaser trailer for the upcoming J.J. Abrams directed film Star Trek(2008), slated to open in theaters in December, 2008: http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/justthefacts_startrek.html

Note the sound effects at the end of the trailer...just like the original 60's series.

This is one movie I am absolutely looking forward to seeing! thumbs up

Indeed, I would also rate Jeri Ryan as the hottest female cast member of any of the ST series. Honorable mention: Linda Park, from Enterprise. noddy

Note: the eleventh ST film, called Star Trek, has had its theatrical release date of December, 2008 pushed back to May, 2009. Paramount Pictures believes this move would afford the movie a larger exposure to the viewing public, with a theatrical release date closer to the summer months.

Pushing back Star Trek is a great vote of confidence by the studio. It'll give Abrams time to tweak the film to his liking. The only bummer is having to wait longer to see it.

Still, I'm loving the resurgence in popularity for TOS. To me, it is the TRUE Star Trek. I like TNG okay, but never really go into the later shows. But now we're seeing TOS everywhere: remastered episodes in syndication, IDW comic books, the new movie. A great time to be a fan of Kirk, Spock, McCoy and the rest of the crew of NCC-1701. B)

I'm willing to wait longer to see the new ST film if the studio wants additional time to make adjustments to the movie. This move is certainly understandable from a marketing standpoint. ;)

Other than the characters I now realize why I like TOS better than all the other TV series. The original series was an adventure show while all the others play more like soap opera dramas. I realized this while I was watching an episode of Enterprise last night ("Terra Prime").

Give me TOS any day! Thank God Paramount has realized that Kirk, Spock, and McCoy ARE Star Trek. rockin'

The appearance of actor Tom Cruise on one of the sets of the upcoming ST film has set off rumors that Cruise might appear in this film. The link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23831305/

My take: Abrams should put Tom Cruise to work as a gaffer or key grip, and then this actor could do some real labor.

As far as everyone knows about the movie (which isn't much) Tom Cruise is not in it. I'm sure he was simply visiting JJ Abrams and checking out the set.

Here's some of those spy pics from Abrams' Star Trek that've been making the rounds on the 'net lately:

These pics first popped up at Aintitcoolnews.com but at the request of Paramount Pictures they were removed. Obviously these pictures have spread beyond that site since then despite the studio trying to suppress them.

While we're at it here are some older spy photos of Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Mr Spock:

It's amazing how much Quinto looks like a young Nimoy in this above pic. Judging from all these photos I think we're gonna be in for something very different and very special when Star Trek is released next summer.

Jesus H Christ. If I didn't know any better, looking at this pic, I'd almost swear I was looking at Leonard Nimoy in his twenties. freak out

Click the link to read Walter Koenig's take on how the role of Pavel Chekhov has influenced his career overall: http://www.trektoday.com/news/040408_01.shtml

Thread drift: I also thought Walter Koenig was great portraying Alfred Bester on the 1993-1998 Michael J. Stracynski produced TV series Babylon Five. thumbs up

It's uncanny isn't, it?

And yeah, Koenig was a pretty vile character on B5, wasn't he?

George Takei chimes in on his thoughts about actor John Cho, who plays "Sulu"(as Takei did in the original 1966 TV series), as well as his early experience with the original ST series after first meeting Gene Roddenberry in the mid 1960's: http://www.trektoday.com/news/280408_02.shtml

I like watching Star trek once in a while. I'm not sure which seasons they're showing on the television here in Sweden. I think I have a few episodes from the first season on Video, but I can't re watch it since we only have DVD-players. sadlyicon

Which Star Trek show do you watch, Xarina? I'm really only a fan of the original series. The Next Generation is okay, but really I'm TOS fan first. Never really cared for the other shows (DS9, Voyager, Enterprise).

To me, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy ARE Star Trek.

A very interesting and candid article. I didn't know that Leonard and Bill were rivals on the set of Star Trek and that they only became best friends years later from doing conventions. I learned a lot of new things about those two that I never knew before. Also, the story of his wife's alcoholism and eventual death was sad and riveting. I never did believe that Bill killed her. It always seemed like an accident to me.

Thanks for the heads up on a great article, Lee. thumbs up
