In 1966 Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future of our Earth and space travel was realized when the television series Star Trek first aired on NBC. Set in the 23rd century, circa 2278, Earth is now a member of an intergalactic alliance called the United Federation Of Planets, and employs a fleet of starships, manned by uniformed officers and enlisted, both human and alien, to operate them. The first TV series, named Star Trek, chronicles the five year voyage of the Constitution-class starship Enterprise, captained by James Tiberius Kirk(played by William Shatner, and including the exec/science officer Spock, a Vulcan(played by Leonard Nimoy), and the medical officer(and Kirk's pal) Leonard McCoy(played by the late DeForest Kelly). The other primary cast members include the Chief Engineer, Montgomery Scott(played by the late James Doohan), the Communications officer, Uhura(played by Nichelle Nichols), the helmsman/asst science officer Pavel Chekhov(played by Walter Koenig), and lastly, the helmsman/navigator Sulu(played by George Takei). The ratings for Star Trek were always a bit shaky, despite the interesting episodes and plethora of alien species that were often featured. After the series went off the air in 1969, a long run of TV syndication would begin with this show, and it still appears today on the Sci-Fi channel from time to time. The first series was followed by other ST television series: Star Trek-The Next Generation, Star Trek-Deep Space Nine, Star Trek-Voyager, and Enterprise. There have also been ten(10) ST films on the big screen, all featuring the casts from the original series or from that of ST-TNG. Next up: a ST film in 2008, the rumor being that the plot will involve a young James T. Kirk and Spock, together in their first adventure. Talk about all things "Star Trek" here. All replies welcome.

Big Star Trek fan here. Especially of Kirk and crew. I'm skeptical of the new reboot, but I'll wait and see
I'm like Dan(our other admin around here) in that I have always associated "Star Trek" with the original series, and I say that with no disrespect to any of the newer series. I've seen them all and I liked them all. Still, I have never believed any of them captured my interest, and made me care about the characters, like the original series, which originally aired on NBC from 1966-1969. Star Trek-TNG came close, IMO, as far as character development and character driven story lines go.

I like what I've seen and heard thus far about the new ST film. I like the cast selections though admittedly I was hoping Matt Damon would have been chosen to play "Jim Kirk". All the actors selected, and who are playing the principal characters in this movie, are all well established and are enjoying solid careers.

I believe this film will do very well at the box office though I hesitate to predict whether it will be an absolute blockbuster.

The STAR TREK Movie official website has character posters available for download. The four characters available are Kirk (Pine), Spock (Quinto), Uhura (Saldana), and Nero (Bana). Zachary Quinto looks exactly like a young Leonard Nimoy. Amazing resemblance.

OOPS. Lee beat me to it. big grin

Yeah, I really liked a lot of the newer series. Especially TNG. But the original crew was always what I had the most sentiment for. I'd rank the shows like this.

TOS
TNG
DS9
ENT
VOY

I enjoy all of them really, but some to a lesser extent, and none have the purely iconic and nostalgic value that the original crew had.

One of the things I'm most curious to see is how the Starfleet uniforms will look on the characters in the upcoming new ST film, and if there will be any homage(s) to the old unis from the 60's series. Regardless of what the uniforms look like, I'm very confident Zoe Saldana will look good in any uniform she wears. tongue-2

I've heard that the costumes are very close to what the old ones looked like, so that pleases me. You can see a small part of Spock's shirt in one of the posters, and it looks pretty good. James Cawley is a definite TOS purist. He saw the uniforms and thought they looked perfect, so they must be pretty faithful to the old ones.

To me, Star Trek is Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. When it was decided to kill off Captain Kirk and focus solely on the 24th Century characters (TNG, DS9, VOY) my interest in the Star Trek franchise completely died. That was until it was announced that the new film would go back to the heart of the saga: Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. Leonard Nimoy signing on board has legitimized JJ Abrams new film and I'm confident that a quality product is being produced.

With this new film, the remastered versions of TOS on TV and DVD, and comics and merchandising focusing on Kirk and crew I'm once again excited to be a Star Trek fan.

Trekmovie.com did an awesome job recoloring those Star Trek posters:

Basically, the characters will be wearing their classic uniforms in the new film. The only difference is the black collar is actually an undertunic. The Enterprise delta shield patches will now be pins like the movies and Next Gen. I love that classic uniform and it'll be cool to see them tweaked and updated. I've got a great feeling about this film.

The uniforms are looking pretty good, what we can see of them. Add to that James Cawley's approval, and I've got faith in at least that aspect of the production.

By the way, Trekmovie.com is my main stop for Trek news now. It's a good site, so I check it frequently.

They even have some of the people working on Star Trek XI posting there sometimes. And they get a lot of exclusive interviews with veteran Trek actors. That's why I tend to think they're the best.

^That'd be a cool set to get. The only problem is having to read them on a computer screen. I like my comics in either magazine or book (trade paperback) form. Still, I feel tempted to get the TOS-only set that'll be coming out after the above item is released.

I've been holding off on buying the original show. Never could afford it with my almost nonexistent income. But I consider myself a pretty big Star Trek fan. The original series is a must-have as soon as I can afford it.

Chris Pine, in an online interview, talks about his approach to portraying James Kirk in the upcoming Star Trek film and how much influence William Shatner, who first portrayed the beloved character, had on his own performance: http://trekmovie.com/2008/08/12/chris-pine-i-didnt-go-to-shatner-ville/

Chris Pine certainly is saying all the things we, as ST fans, want to hear. It's obvious he has great respect for what William Shatner did in the original series. At the same time he wants to make sure he brings parts of himself to the role as well. Physically, this young fellow reminds me a great deal of a young William Shatner.

I'm still not sure. I find it easier to accept other actors in the rest of the roles, but Kirk is just so iconic. He's William Shatner.

Very cool! Did anyone notice the sideburn on Dr. McCoy? Looks like the sideburns many of these characters wore(incuding Kirk) in TOS. shifty eyes2

Actor Clifton Collins, Jr, who plays one of the Romulan villains in the upcoming ST film, talks about his time in the make up chair. It has also apparently been confirmed by the studio(Paramount) that all the Romulans in this film will be bald: http://trekmovie.com/2008/08/20/collins-talks-star-trek-villain-make-up-trekmovie-adds-more-detail/#more-2311

...I guess the Romulans didn't have any Rogaine on their home planet. tongue-1

I thought Romulans and Vulcans were "cousins", so to speak, at least genetically. I know in the original series the Romulans had pointy ears. heyo

I believe Nero's ear has been deformed to keep the Romulans from being discovered. Remember, for the most part this movie takes place before the original series. Humans to see their first Romulan until episode #9, "Balance of Terror". So, to keep with canon, a Rom in disguise is a suitable option.

Excellent point.

And you're right packmule. Romulans and Vulcans are sort of related.
