In 1966 Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future of our Earth and space travel was realized when the television series Star Trek first aired on NBC. Set in the 23rd century, circa 2278, Earth is now a member of an intergalactic alliance called the United Federation Of Planets, and employs a fleet of starships, manned by uniformed officers and enlisted, both human and alien, to operate them. The first TV series, named Star Trek, chronicles the five year voyage of the Constitution-class starship Enterprise, captained by James Tiberius Kirk(played by William Shatner, and including the exec/science officer Spock, a Vulcan(played by Leonard Nimoy), and the medical officer(and Kirk's pal) Leonard McCoy(played by the late DeForest Kelly). The other primary cast members include the Chief Engineer, Montgomery Scott(played by the late James Doohan), the Communications officer, Uhura(played by Nichelle Nichols), the helmsman/asst science officer Pavel Chekhov(played by Walter Koenig), and lastly, the helmsman/navigator Sulu(played by George Takei). The ratings for Star Trek were always a bit shaky, despite the interesting episodes and plethora of alien species that were often featured. After the series went off the air in 1969, a long run of TV syndication would begin with this show, and it still appears today on the Sci-Fi channel from time to time. The first series was followed by other ST television series: Star Trek-The Next Generation, Star Trek-Deep Space Nine, Star Trek-Voyager, and Enterprise. There have also been ten(10) ST films on the big screen, all featuring the casts from the original series or from that of ST-TNG. Next up: a ST film in 2008, the rumor being that the plot will involve a young James T. Kirk and Spock, together in their first adventure. Talk about all things "Star Trek" here. All replies welcome.

Yep. And Kevin Smith is also impressed by what he saw:

The stars absolutely trek in this film. It is fantastic. Anybody who was worried doesn’t need to be worried–about this film I cannot talk about…It was in very capable hands. The director did a phenomenal job–the director and his crew. Top notch cast and the guy that plays the lead is an instant star. That dude is going to be so famous. He is so wonderful. He picked up a role that I would say is pretty challenging for someone to step into the shoes of, because it is a role that has been played before many times by the same guy.

He's the running back for the Detroit Lions. Just kidding, not that Kevin Smith. Kevin Smith is the director of Mallrats, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks, Dogma, etc. He's also a huge sci-fi/comic geek.

Kevin Smith likes the Star Wars prequels. Can we trust him when he says Star Trek XI is good? Maybe. But I don't think of Kevin Smith as the ultimate geek authority. Sometimes he can be pretty cool, but I don't always jive with him.

I find I agree with him most times. He loved the prequels, so did I. He's got "geek-cred", in my view.

Then chances are good that you will enjoy Star Trek XI. Mr. Smiles I hope that Kevin Smith is right about it.

Simon Pegg, who portrays Enterprise Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott in the upcoming ST film, talks about concerns on his being cast for the character, originally played by (the late) James Doohan: http://www.trektoday.com/news/240808_03.shtml

I liked the fact that Chris Doohan, the late James Doohan's son, served as a kind of "adviser" for Simon Pegg. thumbz up

It's amazing. EVERYONE so far who's seen any footage of the film are excited and thrilled by what they've seen. It's killing me to not have see any footage yet. But, it's kinda cool. In a way, it's like in the old days before the internet. When we would anticipate movies that were coming out (i.e. Return of the Jedi) but had no behind-the-scenes pics to spoil us.

I was coming here to post the new images. I think they're pretty awesome. And that's coming from a TOS purist. I know there's some major differences here, but overall it's looking faithful enough.

Won't know for sure, though, until I see the actual movie. I'm not sure about Chris Pine yet. For me, Shatner is Kirk. He's the hardest one to replace. Pine better get it right.

Being a ST fan myself I understand your concern here. I feel likewise because, as you stated, to me William Shatner is Captain James T. Kirk.

I have read several interviews in which Chris Pine, son of actor Robert Pine(Sgt. Getraer from the 70's TV series "CHiPs") has said he fully understands what the character of Kirk means to Star Trek fandom. The young actor even sent a letter to William Shatner, an act I believe was motivated by courtesy, and respect, that Chris Pine has for the man who made the "Kirk" character so famous. Shatner responded back by letter as well, simply suggesting Chris Pine be himself in playing "James Kirk".

I believe Chris Pine will do fine, and hopefully will bring those familiar elements we've come to expect from the "Kirk" character, as well as adding a few of his own, which in all fairness I believe we as ST fans should accept that he is entitled to do. winky

Since we are talking so passionately about William Shatner's ego incarnate Captain Kirk, I would like to make a confession: I refuse to watch Star Trek. Why? My fave character was Kirk, and once I saw generations, Kirk died and I was sad. It was like Godzilla's 1995 meltdown all over again, or Apollo's death in 1985.

I admit that Kirk's death in the 1994 film Star Trek Generations seemed unnecessary and was poorly conceived. As a ST fan I obviously would have preferred to see the character live on. The thing is, major characters in movie and TV series die and they die with a fair degree of regularity.

Examples:

Natasha Yar being killed by the alien "Armus" in the ST-TNG season one episode Skin Of Evil

Spock dying in Star Trek The Wrath Of Khan(1982)

These deaths do not sully my great fondness for the ST franchise. winky

I love everything about these new pics. I'm amazed at how great the new cast looks. Karl Urban is channeling DeForest Kelley and Pine looks great as Kirk. The bridge and captain's chair are fantastic and the updated classic uniforms look spectacular.

The pictures had me really excited, but now I'm worried again thanks to this article. The author is really insulting towards Star Trek, and JJ Abrams says something that bothers me. It seems like he's trying to make Star Trek something he likes instead of trying to make something that's true to what Star Trek is supposed to be.

Read it and tell me if you agree.

I read this article yesterday and I admit to having some disdain for seeing James Kirk in what is described as a "space cadet" uniform. Personally, I'd like to see this character in the gold uniform right from the start but as an "origin" story I suppose Abram's found it necessary for Kirk to start the film in this manner as a sort of trainee.

I was pleasantly surprised at how Karl Urban's overall appearance seems to capture the essence of (the late) DeForest Kelly. I can't really put my finger on it but it's there. winky

Yeah I'm not horribly bothered by seeing Kirk in only the black undershirt. From what I hear, he will get to wear a gold one over it eventually anyway.

Karl Urban is my favorite cast member so far. I've always liked him as an actor. But more so I think he really understands the character of McCoy. From reading what he says about it, I think he understands his character better than anyone else in the movie. He also looks the part.

I'm not so worried about the cast. They all seem pretty good. Still not sure about Chris Pine, but I could see him impressing me.

I'm more worried about JJ Abrams and the writers. Abrams talks like he never really liked Star Trek, but was always more of a Star Wars fan. I could see him totally missing the point of Star Trek and trying to make into something "cool." In other words, more like Star Wars. I love Star Wars, but it's not Star Trek at all. I hope JJ understands the difference. And worse than that, JJ talks like Star Trek is just a big joke. He refers to Galaxy Quest as summing up his feelings for Star Trek. Do we really want this man directing a Star Trek movie? He probably thinks his movie is the only good thing that's come out of Star Trek.

And then there's that one paragraph from the article that has me particularly worried. Spoilers ahead.

Quote:

Star Trek's time-travel plot is set in motion when a Federation starship, the USS Kelvin, is attacked by a vicious Romulan (Eric Bana) desperately seeking one of the film's heroes. From there, the film then brings Kirk and Spock center stage and tracks the origins of their friendship and how they became officers aboard the Enterprise. In fact, the movie shows how the whole original series crew came together: McCoy (Karl Urban), Uhura (Zoë Saldana), Scotty (Simon Pegg), Sulu (John Cho), and Chekov (Anton Yelchin). The adventure stretches from Earth to Vulcan, and yes, it does find a way to have Nimoy appearing in scenes with at least one of the actors on our cover — and maybe both. The storytelling is newbie-friendly, but it slyly assimilates a wide range of Trek arcana, from doomed Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood) to Sulu's swordsmanship to classic lines like, ''I have been, and always shall be, your friend.'' More ambitiously, the movie subversively plays with Trek lore — and those who know it. The opening sequence, for example, is an emotionally wrenching passage that culminates with a mythic climax sure to leave zealots howling ''Heresy!'' But revisionism anxiety is the point. ''The movie,'' Lindelof says, ''is about the act of changing what you know.''

I'm not worried by the interview. And the fact that Abrams isn't really a Trek fan is no big deal. Hell, Nicholas Meyer knew next to nothing about Star Trek but he ended up making the best of the films, The Wrath of Khan.

The bottom line is, Star Trek needed to be infused with new energy and a new blood. The product was really stale.

I agree. Wrath of Khan was awesome. But one thing that was great about that movie was that it was a continuation of an episode from the series. And in the end, Nicholas Meyer seems to have understood Star Trek extremely well. The best case scenario is that JJ Abrams is the nest Nicholas Meyer. I'm going to remain skeptical for now.

I remember Shatner talking about Pine's letters in his videos. I was glad to hear it, but I figured it was just a formality.

But reading this interview has slightly improved my opinion of Chris Pine. He shows respect for Shatner here. And I'm beginning to think he looks like a young Kirk.

So if this is a prequel, it fits in with canon, and it's good, then I'll be OK with it. But if it's a reboot and it ignores the canon, then it's dead to me.
