In 1966 Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future of our Earth and space travel was realized when the television series Star Trek first aired on NBC. Set in the 23rd century, circa 2278, Earth is now a member of an intergalactic alliance called the United Federation Of Planets, and employs a fleet of starships, manned by uniformed officers and enlisted, both human and alien, to operate them. The first TV series, named Star Trek, chronicles the five year voyage of the Constitution-class starship Enterprise, captained by James Tiberius Kirk(played by William Shatner, and including the exec/science officer Spock, a Vulcan(played by Leonard Nimoy), and the medical officer(and Kirk's pal) Leonard McCoy(played by the late DeForest Kelly). The other primary cast members include the Chief Engineer, Montgomery Scott(played by the late James Doohan), the Communications officer, Uhura(played by Nichelle Nichols), the helmsman/asst science officer Pavel Chekhov(played by Walter Koenig), and lastly, the helmsman/navigator Sulu(played by George Takei). The ratings for Star Trek were always a bit shaky, despite the interesting episodes and plethora of alien species that were often featured. After the series went off the air in 1969, a long run of TV syndication would begin with this show, and it still appears today on the Sci-Fi channel from time to time. The first series was followed by other ST television series: Star Trek-The Next Generation, Star Trek-Deep Space Nine, Star Trek-Voyager, and Enterprise. There have also been ten(10) ST films on the big screen, all featuring the casts from the original series or from that of ST-TNG. Next up: a ST film in 2008, the rumor being that the plot will involve a young James T. Kirk and Spock, together in their first adventure. Talk about all things "Star Trek" here. All replies welcome. Thread starter: Packmule's favorite ST television series: the original 1966 series Favorite Captain: James T. It's not quite what I expected. I'd like to see more views of the new ship and the bussard collectors lit up in red before I make any judgements. Still, it's growing on me. |

I think the new ship has its pluses and minuses. Pros: The larger "neck" connecting the secondary and primary hulls The beefier warp engines The blue deflector dish Khans: The slimmer secondary hull The struts that connect the warp engines to the secondary hull. Bottom line is, I can live with the changes. Actually the look of the ship is really starting to grow on me. |

Overall, I have no real complaints about the ship. What bothers me is the characters. From the scene descriptions I don't like how they've handled the character of Kirk especially. They've hugely exaggerated him from his reputation as a womanizer. The real Kirk was very good at attracting women, but I think it was a lot more subtle. When I think of Kirk, I think of a principled ship captain, a brilliant tactician, and an explorer. |

I liked the special effects, but I'm not sure about everything else. This looks more like a Michael Bay movie than a Star Trek movie, at the moment anyway. Maybe the actual movie will be true to Star Trek, but this trailer did little to assuage my fears that it is a soul-less blockbuster with none of the idealism or spirit of exploration found in the original show.

It is with great sadness that I post this news: Majel Barrett-Roddenberry has died. She passed away after battling leukemia at her Bel-Air(CA) home on Thursday(12-18). She was 76. If her last name sounds familiar it should: she was married to Star Trek original series creator Gene Roddenberry. This lovely woman was an integral part of the "Star Trek" franchise, first playing Captain Pike's exec in the original series episode "The Menagerie", then voicing the computer for the series Star Trek: The Next Generation(1987-1994), as well as portraying Lwaxana Troi(Deanna Troi's mother) in the ST-TNG series. The link: http://robojapan.blogspot.com/2008/12/first-lady-of-trek-passes-majel-barrett.html ![]() Here's a short video in which William Shatner comments on the passing of Majel Barrett-Roddenberry: |

Shatner was incorrect in his video blog about Majel not voicing the Enterprise computer in Abrams' STAR TREK. She did indeed complete her voice work. This movie will be her final performance. |

Very glad she finished before she died. Even if I don't like the movie, it will be much better for having her do the computer voice. |

Friends, family and former "Star Trek" co-stars gathered this past Sunday to pay their final respects to Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, who died on December 18th. Several hundred people attended, including many actors and actresses from the original and more recent ST series, as well as Paramount executives. To see some photos of this public memorial service click the link: http://trekmovie.com/2009/01/04/star-trek-fans-and-colleagues-say-goodbye-at-barrett-roddenberry-public-memorial/ May this kind and lovely woman rest in peace. |

New Star Trek trailer. Watch it. Now. http://www.startrekmovie.com/ I'm still skeptical about the movie being a true Star Trek movie, but I seem to like this trailer a lot. Maybe I won't as much when the new-ness wears off. But right now it has me fairly excited. |

The visuals are very impressive and Eric Bana, being the accomplished actor he is, should make a great villain in "Nero". I don't get that "Star Trek" feel from this trailer, or the other trailers. That doesn't mean I won't like the film. I probably will. I just hope the film is well received and makes money for Paramount, so a sequel will be made.

Yeah, that's exactly what I think. It's a spectacular trailer, and one that makes me excited to see the film. But it doesn't really say "Star Trek" to me as much as I'd like. Hopefully the movie itself will. |

Frankly I'm glad that it doesn't have that "old Star Trek feel". This is a new Trek for a new generation of fans. Star Trek has to reach beyond its fanbase if it is to survive. |

That's a pretty loose term, though. There's a lot of variety of "feels" in the Star Trek shows and movies. I think it's more about what I don't want it to feel like. I don't want it to feel like Transformers. I guess I'd live if it felt like Star Wars. But I'd feel like they were just trying to turn Star Trek into another Star Wars. That's not reaching out. That's pandering to the fans of the more popular franchise. I want it to feel like Star Trek. But that doesn't mean I don't want it to be a whole new and transcendent experience. There are just elements that need to be there for it to even deserve the name "Star Trek." This new trailer feels like Star Trek to me. There I said it. This new trailer feels like Star Trek. At least as much like Star Trek as any of the other Star Trek movies did. That is, except for the music. But Giacchino's score will fix that. You can hear a bit of it on the official site, and it sounds fine to me. Sounds classic. It feels like Star Trek. Giacchino is known for his retro feel, and some who've heard the score with the scenes from the movie that were shown a while back also said that the score was awesome and retro, but in a good way. And why shouldn't it feel like Star Trek? This is a Star Trek movie, isn't it? I expected updated special effects and more action. Nothing un-Trek about that. The uniforms look great. They're just more-detailed versions of the original uniforms. The Enterprise looks enough like the old ship for me to call it the Enterprise. From what I've seen so far, I'm starting to get the impression that the film-makers are simply updating Star Trek. They're not making it something else. They're just re-vamping it so it'll be like experiencing Star Trek in a whole new way. Edited by CrowMagnumMan, Mar 9 2009, 06:08 PM.
