Found this info at DVD Review.com, not sure how definite this news
is, but if it comes to pass, this is absolutely fantastic news for
classic sci-fi fans! Here's the news, courtesy of DVD Review.com:

Tarantula comes as part of The Classic SciFi Ultimate Collection

For years fans have hoped that Universal would finally release some
more of their golden age 50s science fiction films, especially Jack
Arnold's 1955 classic, Tarantula. The wait is finally coming to an
end as Universal Home entertainment just unveiled The Classic SciFi
Ultimate Collection which will be released on September 19.
The DVD set will contain "Tarantula, The Mole People, The Incredible
Shrinking Man, The Monolith Monsters and Monster On The Campus.
Universal has not yet revealed exact details about each of the
films, such as special features, but with a low $19.98 sticker
price, I would not expect too much in terms of extras.
Still, this is a venerable Jack Arnold celebration and I have no
doubts that fans of the genre will dig these films up with eager
anticipation. I know, I will. We will, of course, keep you up to
date as soon as additional information becomes available.

Thanks, Lee, I'll try and be a little more careful, when posting something, 'new', to be sure it hasn't already been posted! :)

As far as this collection goes, I was reading online, last night that this collection may be a Best Buy exclusive. From what I read, you may only be able to pick this set up at a Best Buy retail store or at their online site. Not wanting to miss out on this, as my local Best Buy rarely gets enough copies of anything I want in, I went ahead and pre-ordered this collection at the Best Buy online site, last night. I only hope the DVD cover they're showing isn't the final choice! cheeky sick smiley I know, it's what's on the inside that counts, but in this case, I;d like a cover a little more appealing!

No worries. It happens sometimes. :)

There is a new Best Buy(opened on 8/11) about two(2) miles from my residence, so I will probably go by this store after work and try to get it. If Best Buy only has a few copies of this on the rack(and they might, knowing how they are), then I doubt there will be any left by the time I get to the store(around 5 PM). thumbs down

Well, there is a new Best Buy that opened in NY state, about 60-75 minutes from where I live and they did have four copies of, Ultraman on their shelves, but I decided to not take any chances and I pre-ordered the collection from the Best Buy website.

I'm curious as to the screen formats of these movies in the box set. There was some discussion at the CHFB(Classic Horror Film Board) about The Incredible Shrinking Man(1957) being letterboxed-several members claimed to have seen it in "scope". I also wonder if Tarantula(1955) will be letterboxed, or presented in some kind of widescreen format. The widescreen format began in 1953 by the way. Wasn't the Reg 2 of "Tarantula" in some sort of widescreen format?

I checked at Xploited Cinema on the format for Tarantula and it's listed on their page as 'fullframe'. Now, The Incredible Shrinking Man is listed as 'anamorphic widescreen', but no aspect ratio is given.

Kimi, I found this post at the CHFB yesterday:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Someone recently posted this message over on the Home Theater Forum:

Quote:Per DVDReview.com all of the films will be presented in their original aspect ratio, which, according to them (& Universal) means that Incredible Shrinking Man is 1.78:1 & the others in full-frame: quote: "Some of the films in the set were re-released after their theatrical runs in matted widescreen versions at one point or another but they were never really meant to be seen that way." and quote: "As a result Universal decided not to release these matted versions because they feel that the fans of these classic films will want to see them in their original form"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So if these comments are correct then "The Incredible Shrinking Man"(1957) would be in 1.78:1 widescreen and the rest of the films in this set would be standard full frame... faster <!--emo&shifty eyes-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

I'm kind of ignorant when it comes to understanding aspect ratios and the hard matte stuff, but I do want to see any film I watch in it's original aspect ratio, so if, The Incredible Shrinking Man is widescreen and the others are fullframe, I can live with that. I just can't wait to get my greedy hands on this collection! Jimi

LOL....well, we have two excited buyers! Mr Green

I'm going to call the Best Buy store near my residence and, assuming they have this set in stock, ask them to hold a copy for me for a couple of hours. The Best Buy store I used to shop at(that was much farther away) did this once for me-they held the title for several hours(behind one of their computer stations). Hopefully this closer Best Buy store will do the same. faster <!--emo&shifty eyes-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

You know, when I was at that new Best Buy in New York state a couple of weeks ago, they told me that you can go online, order a certain DVD and actually choose to have it sent to that particular store and you won't have to pay shipping costs and they will call you when the DVD is in the store. That would be great for me, if we had a close store, but in what I pay for shipping, I would easily spend that cost and more in gas to get to the store.

Here's hoping they (Best Buy) are helpful in holding a copy for you. :)
