Though I consider all of the films that are part of this DVD set to be stellar, it is the ones that I have not seen that I am looking forward to the most: The Mole People and The Monolith Monsters. I saw bits and pieces of Monster On The Campus as a kid but no more, so these three are essentially new viewings to me.

Monster On the Campus will kind of be a 'new' viewing for me, as well, it's been years since I've seen that film. I am watching disc two, now, finished, The Incredible Shrinking Man and now, The Monolith Monsters, both films look good and, The Incredible Shrinking Man was in widescreen! thumbs up

The Incredible Shrinking Man(1957) is, IMO, a truly inspired sci-fi movie. Taking normal, everyday things in life, like your house, your pet(the cat), household bugs(the spider), your clothes,...essentially everything you never notice...and turn it against you(by being shrunk). freak out

A clever sci-fi feature, ranking right up there, IMO, with films like Fantastic Voyage(1966) and The Andromeda Strain(1971) thumbs up

I think this classic still packs a heck of a punch, it's as you said, terrifying to think that every day household items and creatures could become a living nightmare for you. I think the effects for this film are outstanding and very realistic.....if anyone has never seen this film, I highly recommend, The Incredible Shrinking Man, you may be surprised at how good the film really is.

I looked over the cover art of my copy of this DVD set today(I received it in the mail today). I see that all but The Incredible Shrinking Man(1957), which is 1.78:1 widescreen, are 1.33:1, i.e. full framed. Disappointed that the others were not widescreen Kimi?

Were the other films, filmed in widescreen, Lee? I honestly never knew about the original aspect ratios, but to be perfectly honest, I'm so thrilled to have these on DVD, I won't whine too much. :)

I also have to say, I thought the cover looked butt-ugly online, but the slipcover isn't as bad as it came across, online, although I think the collage of scenes from the films, lobby cards and posters are very nice and it's a shame that artwork wasn't used as the official cover.

I don't know. There was some discussion about this at the CHFB-I gathered from the majority of comments that the other 1.33:1 formatted movies in this set were not filmed in widescreen format, but there was at least one member of that particular CHFB thread that disagreed. I'm sure by doing a little internet "digging" I can come up with an answer to your question.

Like you mentioned, I'm just glad to have these old classics on disc. thumbs up

If the picture quality on these discs had been horrible or if they'd had the serious issues that the Hammer and Lugosi collections had, last year, I might gripe a bit, but the picture quality was really nice looking and they'd originally said there would be no bonus features at all and while a theatrical trailer isn't the end-all-be-all for bonus features, as a whole, I'm very happy with this collection. thumbs up

I noticed that the opening Universal score and image preceding the opening film credits are all in black and white, like the movies themselves. At the risk of sounding nitpicky, why would Universal make their opening score and logo image B & W? Perhaps to "mesh"(for lack of better word) better with these old classics? eyebrow

I have a feeling that may be the erason. Seems I've seen Universal doing that same thing, perhaps in the Lugosi collection or their Hammer collection from last year.

Which of the five films in this set is your favorite, Kimi?

Mine: Tarantula(1955)

Honorable mention: The Incredible Shrinking Man(1957), which is, I think, the most well made of all of them. I just enjoy watching the 1955 film a little more. ghost 2

My choice would also be; Tarantula. The film is just too fun to deny and I also agree, The Incredible Shrinking Man is probably a much better made film and looks to be much more than a 'B' film, but Tarantula is so fun to watch, it gets my vote. ghostly face

One of the reasons I like Tarantula the best is: 1) it has not only a giant monster in it but also a "horror" element(the disfigurement of Deemer and his colleagues from the serum) and 2) I liked John Agar's performance in this movie better than in others

Definitely solid reasons for preferring, Tarantula. I think any 50s sci-fi/horror films always is a lot more fun if you have some mutated beastie in the story. Agar is very good and quite believeable in the film and the entire cast makes for fun viewing.

Now that Universal's The Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection has been released, I'd like to see Universal do this again in the not too distant future. As to the next five(5) films, well I know there is one I would definitely like to see in the next DVD set. Look below for a clue as to what it is. tongue-1

Yes! I'd love to see, The Deadly Mantis in the next batch, if there is one. I'd also love to see; The Land Unknown and Cult of the Cobra.
