I am a great fan of actor Nick Adams. I always have been. I grew quite fond of the actor's steady and solid presence in the Toho films Invasion Of The Astro Monsters(1965) and Frankenstein Vs Baragon(1965), the latter aka in the West as Frankenstein Conquers The World. Sometimes when I watch these two movies it's easy to forget that Mr. Adams also appeared on television. One of his many TV appearances was in a 1964 season one episode of Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea entitled "Turn Back The Clock". He also starred in another 1965 film, a horror feature I think often flies "under the radar", and currently on DVD as a "Midnite Movie" feature: Die Monster! Die!, an 80 minute feature based on the story The Color Of Space, written by H.P. Lovecraft. The film's story: American Stephen Reinhart(Adams) has travelled to England to visit his girlfriend and former college classmate Susan Witley, who resides in the Witley mansion, along with her father, played by Boris Karloff, and her ill, bedridden mother, played by Freda Jackson. It doesn't take long for Reinhart to discover that something is definitely rotten in the state of Denmark, in this case the town and the local citizenry, who immediately shun Reinhart at the mention of the name "Witley". Reinhart arrives in town to a sullen and close-lipped populace, and finally makes it to the gloomy, fog-shrouded Witley estate on foot. The elder Witley(Karloff) wants Reinhart to leave, and Susan and her ill mother want him to stay. Reinhart hangs around, and his curiosity about the Witley place is understandably piqued by bizarre shrieks in the middle of the night, a mysterious figure prowling the grounds, even attacking Reinhart with a knife at one point, and the mysterious death of Merwyn, the elder Witley's personal assistant. As Reinhart and his girlfriend Susan discover, there's something in the greenhouse, and it's definitely not your typical vegetable garden. There's also something in the cellar of the Witley mansion, and it's not a wine collection. (no spoilers) -------Observations: I believe this film is underrated. The presence of legendary horror actor Boris Karloff is a big plus, and there are the requisite weird noises, sound effects(the wind howling, shutters slamming), and visuals(the mist and fog that perpetually enshroud the mansion) that all combine to give this movie the necessary tension in order to build to the climax. The makeup effects are serviceable. There is something of a "cheese" factor in this movie, and I think the "dinner table" scene may have been a bit too long, but this movie has, like a great pair of jeans, aged well, for me anyway, and it has become a steady comfortable fit for me as well, whenever I need to watch an older horror classic, that doesn't take itself too seriously, to cheer me up. The region 1 DVD of this movie is good quality, and offers scene selection, language options, and a theatrical trailer. It is presented in 2.35:1 letterbox format. Post your takes and impressions of this 1965 film and/or the DVD here. All replies welcome. :)

Couldn't agree more with your thoughts, Lee. thumbs up You rarely hear mention of this film and I can recall seeing this on a late-night Friday night as a kid and it scared the heck out of me, based on the visuals and sounds, it just had that haunted house look about it and the cast is outstanding.....Adams, Karloff, Jackson, Suzan Farmer and Patrick Magee all bring a lot to the film. Not to say the film doesn't bog down a time or two, as already mentioned, but overall, this film is great fun and definitely worth checking out. thumbs up |

Yahoo or Google search engines, then simply clicking "Images". I have high-speed internet, and I still have a lot of space left on my computer hard drive to post many(though not all) of these images without an image hosting service. Though I have not made a final decision yet on the matter, I am considering buying(sometime in the spring of next year) a new computer with more disk space. I would keep my current computer and use it strictly for offline things(work related and word processing). Topic: I can tell you that the images available through the Yahoo and Google search engines for celebs vary wildly. If you do a search for "Nick Adams" images you will find a considerable amount of material. If you do one for Die Monster! Die! co-star "Suzan Farmer" you would find very little to look at. eyebrow Image: there's never a dull moment in the Witley mansion, as American Stephen Reinhart(played by Nick Adams) discovers in Die Monster! I'm sorry to hear that high-speed internet is not in your budget. I hope someday soon it will be. When I first got online, via a used laptop in March of 2005, I had to use dialup internet service, as it was the only service available where I lived. Thankfully, the apt complex offered high-speed wireless internet access(through their office network) about six months later, in August OF 2005, for the cost of a wireless adapter(about $20) and then $20.00 a week more(the weekly fee). After using high speed I was not going back to dialup, where I always had random, and often frequent disconnections, several in the middle of Paypal or other catalog order transactions. When I moved into my new residence in early July of this year, I had to decide between Comcast and Bell South Fast Access DSL. Comcast's actual average speeds were somewhat better than Bell South's(Comcast-up to 11 mbps/Bell South-6 mbps), but cable service(70 channels) was already on and active in this new residence of mine-all I had to do was plug the coaxial cable protruding from the wall into the back of my TV set and I had cable. Not needing cable, and only a private phone line and internet access Bell South seemed the logical choice. It isn't cheap. For my phone service(active in two wall jacks), and high-speed internet access, I pay around $110.00 a month. I am going to receive a $100 Visa gift certificate(for subscribing to the phone service), and either a $75 check or webcam for subscribing to DSL. thumbs up Topic: I have noticed Kimi, that Die Monster! Die!(1965) is also available as part of a MGM "Midnite Movie" double feature, paired with The Dunwich Horror |

Thanks, Lee, I also hope to be able to get in on high-speed access, soon! :) I have both, The Dunwich Horror and Die Monster Die! as stand-alone discs, so I wasn't aware that you could get both on one disc......that's handy. I know the double-feature offerings were a great find for folks who might not have been able to pick up on individual releases, It seems that I purchased, Count Yorga, Vampire, but had to purchase, Count Yorga, Vampire/The Return of Count Yorga as a double-feature, because, Return of Count Yorga was only available as part of the double-feature package. :( |

I love these mutated 'things'. :) The DVD does allow for much better viewing of some of the darker scenes than watching this film on TV used to permit. |
