Yesterday, I was doing some channel surfing and came across, Operation Petticoat on TCM. Since the film was pretty much over when I came across it, I decided to pull my DVD out and watch the film. This is one of those classic comedy films that perhaps on the surface doesn't appear that it could be all that good, but I love it. Grant and Curtis actually work well with each other and the supporting cast is just as solid....Dina Merrill, Joan O'Brien, Dick Sargent, Gene Evans, Virginia Gregg, Marion Ross, Gavin MacLeod and Arthur O'Connell. As the DVD synopsis can describe the film better than I ever could and in much less space, here's the synopsis from the back of the DVD: ******************************************************************** Cary Grant and Tony Curtis ship out for laughs and adventure in one of the most hilarious comedies to ever hit the high seas. Commander Matt Sherman (Grant) has his toughest assignment yet - to put a broken sardine can of a submarine back in action. Enter supply officer Nick Holden (Curtis), a master scavenger with the (illegal) means to get the Sea Tiger purring - or at least afloat. But after the rescue of five stranded (and beautiful) nurses, the grey, battle-scarred sub is suddenly transformed into a pink, party-ready hot tub. Now there' sonly one course of action Sherman and his men take - surrender! ******************************************************************** This film is a lot of fun and never bogs down at all, if you're even a casual fan of comedies, I'd definitely recommend this classic. thumbs up thumbs up |

An absolutely hilarious film. I have also watched it before on TCM. Their are many funny subplots in this film, the best being the gruff(sort of) Captain(Cary Grant) vs supply officer extraordinaire Lt Holden(Tony Curtis). Other funny parts of the movie: 1. the island "raffle" and casino(of sorts) set up by Holden in order to secure the needed supplies for their submarine 2. The sub ending up pink, as a result of the mixture of "red lead"(a Navy paint primer) and the paint itself(white in color)-uh oh, better get Maaco! 3. The shenanigans between the Captain and the female nurse who exhibited exraordinary clumsiness-recall the scene where he sat on a pin cushion in her cabin hyper 4. Lt. Holden's theft of the large pig from the local farmer, and the transportation of the swine in their truck back to the sub, which was interrupted by two MPs along the way back. Holden and his compadre had to dress the pig up to resemble(if that's possible Mr. Piggy ) a crew member, referred to later as "Seaman" Hornsby 5. the scene at the end-years later, Holden now the Captain of his own sub, with Admiral Sherman on the dock waiting for his wife, who shows up in a car, and in serious need of Taggart's Driving School-she impacts another vehicle and drags it away with its owner chasing on foot, shouting in hysterics laughing smiley This film is one of the most delightful comedies I have ever seen, bar none. thumbs up Image-On Pins And Needles:Captain Sherman(Cary Grant) looks none too pleased as the medical corpsman removes sewing pins from his derriere, courtesy of a pin cushion in Lt. Dolores Crandall's quarters |

 Great scene choices! I just find the entire film a lot of fun, kind of like the Doris Day/James Garner film, The Thrill of it All!, nothing too extreme, just some good laughs and great casts! |

Though there are many squabbles and misunderstandings in this film, and those like it, there is never any vulgarity, or profanity. Mostly innocent fun, with a few suggestive lines(and situations) thrown in for good measure. Other funny scenes: 1. Captain Sherman attempting to appease the local farmer with things from Lt. Holden's quarters, as compensation for said farmer's stolen pig Mr. Piggy 2. the nurse's reaction to seeing the tatoo on Hunkle's(Gavin McLeod) chest 3. the engineer's reaction to Nurse Edna's use of panties to make the pump in the engine room work better eyebrow laughing smiley |

 I loved the use of the girdle in the engine room. Just a lot of fun to watch this and it's nice that you can watch this film with anyone and not worry about anyone becoming embarrassed at any time. thumbs up |

This movie is a riot. Other funny aspects of the film: 1. Ensign Stovall(Dick Sargent) always trying to play the straight-and-narrow officer with the Captain around, easy enough for him to do, except when Lt. Holden's around. 2. Lt. Holden's first day onboard after the sub had gotten underway. He expected breakfast in bed, and wanted to sleep in, which obviously did not sit well with the Captain 3. various crew members feigning illness in order to be around the nurses in sick bay 4. One of my favorite one liners from the movie, during the pig roast dinner on deck when the sub was dockside: Nurse: "The sub is such a pretty shade of pink don't you think?" Crewmember: "Please ma'am...I'm trying to eat." laughing smiley |

 That was a great line. Grant and Curtis were great in the film and I always thought it was neat how well Grant played the 'straight' man to Curtis' antics. I think at times, Grant was highly underrated as an actor, at least in some of his comedy films. |
