Anyone here a fan of the three Quatermass films from Hammer Studios? I enjoy them all, but, Quatermass and the Pit is probably my favorite film of the three. Andrew Keir as Professor Quatermass is an excellent fit in the role, for my money. Brian Donlevy was in the role of Quatermass for the first two films and while he did a wonderful job as well, I think Keir gets the edge. The story is great fun and the supporting cast of, Barbara Shelley, James Donald and Julian Glover really make the story seem much more believable. As a huge fan of Hammer films, these all make points for me, but I have seen the BBC version of, Quatermass and the Pit and that's quite good, as well. |

I have seen only two: Quatermass 2(1957) and Quatermass And The Pit(1967). So far so good. "Quatermass 2" is a creepy thriller-to me it had elements of The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits, and Brian Donlevy was, IMO, serviceable, as Professor Quatermass. On a scale of 1-10 I rate this film a 7.5. I liked "Quatermass And The Pit" much more. Reasons: like you I thought Andrew Keir brought more intensity and passion to the character-he is clearly an educated, highly intelligent, and affable man but is also capable of getting really fired up when challenged on fact or principle, as his repeated skirmishes with his military counterpart in this film demonstrated well. I liked the storyline to the 1967 film better as well: the premise that our own evolution was the result of insectoid Martians geneticallly altering apes here on Earth-at once fascinating, preposterous and crazy. In addition to stated reasons thus far there was another reason I liked this film better: the beautiful Barbara Shelley ![]() I rate this film 8.5/10. |

B) Pleased to see a fellow fan! The Quatermass Xperiment is a decent enough film and if I'm not mistaken, I saw where TCM is airing this classic on 27 April, so may be a good opportunity for you to catch this film, as well. Mr Green Keir seemed to fit the role of Quatermass so very well and for all the reasons you listed, packmule......I've enjoyed his performances in anything I have seen him in. I have the Hammer documentary, Flesh and Blood and Keir is interviewed and it appears it may have been done shortly before his death. Anyway, Keir seemed to be just as outspoken in life as the characters he assumed in film.....I believe he had some less than positive remarks on Roy Ward Baker and the directing he did for a film Keir was in for Hammer. I'd have to double check the disc, again, but Keir was very outspoken in life as well. I've always wondered what Peter Cushing might have brought to the role of Quatermass, I think he might have been an interesting choice, as well. |

I think Peter Cushing would have made a good Quatermass, perhaps a bit more restrained in words than Mr. Kier. In all of the films I have seen starring Peter Cushing(the "Frankenstein" and "Sherlock Holmes" films) in the lead role, he always seemed the great intellectual, slightly moody or twitchy, and of measured words and actions. I believe he would make a more emotionally restrained(or muted) Quatermass, as opposed to Andrew Keir, who, as I mentioned before, was capable of sudden rants and outbursts of anger and possessed a kind of "rough" quality, perhaps promoted by his full beard and pre-midday intake of whiskey from his pocket flask. |

After reading your post, I believe you're correct, Cushing could have pulled off the intellectual and moody aspect of the Quatermass character, but Keir definitely had the passionate and angry outbursts down pat in the role of Quatermass. I really love the quatermass films, but Quatermass and the Pit is without a doubt, my favorite of the three films. |

It is my favorite as well. It had, also, some funny moments, as well. Aside from the arguments between Quatermass and his military counterpart, the stodgy and arrogant colonel, there was also the goofy, somewhat talkative electrician, who operated the power drill. The electrician's behavior after being subjected to the alien ship's "force" was also vivid: he stumbled out of the subway like a man suffering from demonic possession, then wanders through a cemetery to a church. Later, while being questioned by Quatermass the electrician stammers like a common drunkard, making wild facial and hand gestures. Unintended humor perhaps. The way the electrician sagged deep into the chair after recounting his ordeal=reminds me of myself, flopping onto the couch Friday night after a hard work week .

Oh yes, I always liked how Hammer could inject some light moments of humor, even during a horror film, it sometimes added some much needed relief from tense moments and the humor was often added without having the film fall into total nonsense. There really wasn't any genuine scares in the film, but Colonel Breen did become a bit....'gooey' and that was pretty wild! dead LOL I seem to recall sagging into a chair or sofa after a rough week of work, myself! |

Re: scares. Tell that to the constable who allowed Quatermass(and Barbara Shelley's character) inside the old bldg called Hobb's End: the squat lawman looked as if he might lose his bowels had he remained in the creepy old bldg(with scratch marks on the wall) any longer... On the subject of Colonel Breen...indeed, he was thoroughly roasted by the force of the alien ship. I never get any real enjoyment out of seeing movie characters die, but I had little sympathy for this stiff, pompous jackass in uniform, as he was repeatedly warned by Quatermass to stay away from the alien craft. eyebrow |

Wow! As a die-hard Hammer fanatic, that looks like an awesome set. I have all the films included as either R1 or R2, with the exception of, The Nanny, which stars Bette Davis and one I'd love to get. Now, I'm going to have to look into these release a little more, IF they offer better bonus features than the discs I own, I'll have to upgrade, dontcha know? ;) |

Go for it! Mr Green I rarely to almost never 'win' anything, but my Dad, he wins amazing things. Probably about 6 or 7 years ago, he purchased a ticket at the Country Club for $20 and won a 42" or 51" TV! I can't recall the exact dimensions, but he didn't want it and sold it for $1500! I told him he could have given the TV to his favorite (and only) daughter as a gift and he said I'd never have received another gift from him, if he had given me that TV! |

 I felt the same way when Dad opted to not keep that TV in the family. Dad is very generous, to a point, but his love as a parent can only go so far and when he saw that TV, he saw $ signs! |
