I, perosnally, love the 'Spaghetti' western films. I don't own any, but I hope to rectify that, come Christmas or if possible, before! My perosnal favorites would probably be:

-The Good, the Bad and the Ugly,
-Once Upon A Time In the West
-For a Few Dollars More
-A Fistful of Dollars

Any fellow 'Spaghetti' western fans?

Any fellow 'Spaghetti' western fans?

I also like "Spaghetti" westerns. For those unfamiliar as to the nickname of this genre of films it's simple: these were movies filmed in Italy(a cost-cutting move by the studios). Among my favorites:

1. The Good, The Bad And The Ugly(1967)

2. A Fistful Of Dollars(1964)

3. High Plains Drifter(1973)

thumbs up

Clever title. tongue-1

I have always been partial to Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns. His "The Man With No Name" character, a rugged, sullen, and deliberate fellow with a fondness for cigars and a short fuse when it comes to drunkards, card cheats, wannabe gunfighters and other local town riff-raff, really carries these movies. Did I forget to mention that he is hell on wheels with his six-shooters? faster <!--emo&shifty eyes-->Posted Image<!--endemo-->

I haven't always been a big fan of any westerns....not a die-hard fan, more of a casual fan and pleasantly surprised when I do find a western I like, but I am a big fan of the spaghetti westerns, because they they are much grittier and believable than their U.S. made counterparts. Now, that's not to say I don't have a handful of U.S.-made westerns that I enjoy, but I'm on more of a spaghetti western kick, at the moment.

I really have no preference for "spaghetti" westerns over other westerns I have watched. Speaking of westerns, here are the ones I have watched that I thought were very good:

1. Last Train To Gun Hill(1957)
2. Gunfight At The O.K. Coral(1957)
3. The Magnificent Seven(1960)
4. Pale Rider(1985)
5. High Plains Drifter(1973)
6. The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly(1967)
7. A Fistful Of Dollars(1964)
8. The Outlaw Josey Wales(1976)
9. The Fastest Gun Alive(1956)
10. Once Upon A Time In Mexico(1969)

Honorable mentions: Wyatt Earp(1994), Tombstone(1993), and Open Range(2003)

thumbs up

I've never seen either of these, though I've seen reviews of both that are very positive. I'm sure if Kimi("Kaijufanatic") hasn't seen them she'll try and put them in her roommate's Netflix queue.

The Searchers, in my opinion is probably Wayne's best on-screen performance. I think it even trumps the Rooster Cogburn movies. I don't want to give any spoilers since you havent seen it, but watch the film and you will see Wayne's acting really go into directions you didnt think he was capable of. Part of this was the superb direction and coaching of legendary director John Ford.

Besides the acting and superb story, I was also awed by the scenery present in the searchers- the long shots of the desert canyons and plateaus were beautiful.

I'm curious, Josh, as to your take on the ending of High Plains Drifter(1973). Do you think the character that Eastwood played, the "man with no name", who appeared in Lagos, was the same guy whipped nearly to death in the streets in the flashback, referred to in the film as "Marshal Duncan"("Jim Duncan" on the headstone). Or was it a completely different fellow? heyo

What kind of sold me on the "Nameless" Eastwood character being Duncan was how they ended it by panning the camera across the gravestone, then showing him riding off and kind of dissapearing, like he was a ghost that could now rest because he had avenged himself. I never really considered it being anyone else, so I guess my answer would be that I think Eastwoods nameless character was Duncan.
