While shopping recently at a Best Buy I came upon a DVD in the "sci-fi" section that was very nicely priced and is IMO, a very good value. It's called Gamera-The Ultimate Collection, and contains three(3) films on one DVD: Gammera The Invincible(1965), War Of The Monsters(1966), and Destroy All Planets(1968). The DVD is a product of Vintage Home Entertainment. The cover art is good and the cover itself folds out to reveal Vestiges from the Vintage vault, which is a summary of trivia and little-known facts about these 60's Gamera films. The inside part of the fold out is a a B&W photo of Gamera holding a Japanese female in his hand-very cheesy! The interactive menus for these films have chapter stops and the audio is Dolby Digital AC-3 stereo. For those fans who are hardcore purists and only enjoy the orig lang/letterboxed versions of these films this DVD might be a miss. If you enjoy the "Americanized" versions of these films(I grew up on them) then this DVD is for you. It is priced at $6.99. In my opinion it's a steal. -------Comments or questions about this topic, post here. :) Posted Image

I've seen this set at Sam Goody and it's a bit more expensive, there, but still a nice deal. I already have all the films in this collection, but would definitely pick this up, if I hadn't already owned them. That's the bugger about DVDs, so often you dole out a lot of cash to get certain films and then a little later, you find a nice little deal like this!

Indeed. You stock up on the "discount" titles of these movies, one by one, then some independent studio comes along and tosses out a trilogy or something of these same titles. Frustrating.

Another good bargain on DVD: Return Of The Giant Monsters(1967)/The Magic Serpent(1966), a double-feature DVD released by Retromedia-the price range may vary, from $12.99-$17.99. "Return Of The Giant Monsters", aka Gamera Vs Gyaos, along with The Magic Serpent, are both presented in standard, full-frame format and in Dolby digital mono. I bought my copy at Tower Records for about $14.99. A good bargain for those fans willing to watch these films in full frame. Here is the link to Retromedia: Retromedia

OMG, I love that DVD.
Im embarrased to say that Gamera vs. Gyaos is the only Gamera film I have ever seen.
I really need to go to Suncoast and buy that Gamera Trilogy Box Set someday.

The Magic Serpent is a very fun film, too bad my DVD freezes at a certain point, I always gotta skip chapters.
Its a really cheasy film but its really fun to watch and the storyline was interesting enough.

Another Retromedia DVD double feature at a bargain price: Gamera Vs. Monster X/Monster From A Prehistoric Planet. These films, aka Gamera Vs Jiger(1970) and Gappa The Triphibian Monster(1967), are packaged together on one disc-again no extras, a full frame picture and Dolby Digital mono, but for around $15.00 I think this, like the previously mentioned "Retromedia" DVD, is a good deal for fans who are content to watch these films they way they were presented on late-night television. Wow, Lee...that sounds like a great set. Excellent price too! Can you tell me if those Gamera movies are the classic AIP dubs or the inferior Sandy Frank versions?

Gamera Vs Monster X is the Sandy Frank version. I have not watched the opening credits for the other Gamera features but it would not surprise me if they were all SF produced. The prints are about on par with what I have of these movies from Retromedia and Alpha Video, The prints are watchable, and okay generally speaking, but with the obvious wear and tear you might see: lines, speckles, a dot here and there. These old films are part of history Dan, that is, the old pan and scanned TV prints, and as a collector, and I am a collector, I want them in my DVD inventory, which is around 575 titles right now. My DVD library will number over 1000 titles within 4-5 years. Waldo

575 movies?!! Wow. Anyway, I'm not a big Showa Gamera fan. It'd be nice if there were a bargain DVD set that included films like THE X FROM OUTER SPACE, GAPPA, WARNING FROM SPACE, etc. Now that'd be a set I'd check out.

I don't buy as many DVDs as I use to. When I was making more money per year(from 1999-2001) I bought more. I started my collection in November of 1999-I already had about 100 + VHS at that time. It might take me longer to get to 1000. I am going to get the remaining volumes of Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea and then I'm done with TV shows(my others: Wonder Woman(1976-1979) and Lost In Space(1965-1968)). I will be concentrating on several types of DVD's in the next few years Dan: the older Western horror classic(including some "Hammer" horror films I still do not have), some region 2 DVDs of Toho films, to replace my DVD-Rs, e.g. Gorath, Battle In Outer Space(1959), and The H-Man(1958). Lastly, the Ultraman television series, mainly Ultraseven and The Return Of Ultraman. It might take me ten years to get everything I want, but I'm patient, and methodical, especially the latter. evil beaver
