Epics. I have plenty of these films in my DVD library. An "epic" is considered to be a film with extravagant and detailed production values and sets, a plethora of top name actors, and a usually long run time, about two and a half hours, or even longer. Talk about your favorite epics here. I'll start off this thread with some of my own:

1. The Ten Commandments(1956)
2. Spartacus(1960)
3. Dr. Zhivago(1965)
4. Lawrence Of Arabia(1962)
5. Ben-Hur(1959)
6. The Lords Of The Ring-The Two Towers

Great topic, Lee and great choices, as well. thumbs up Here are some of my personal faves:

-Ben-Hur
-Cleopatra ('63)-I know, a major flop to most, but I enjoy it. :)
-The Greatest Story Ever Told
-Henry V ('89)-Does this count as an epic?
-The Longest Day
-The Sound of Music-Again, not really an epic, but mighty close!
-Spartacus ('60)
-The Ten Commandments
-Giant

I still need to add Giant to my collection, but I always enjoyed that film.

-The Greatest Story Ever Told

-The Longest Day
-The Sound of Music

All of these are epics, at least in my book. While I have never been particularly enamored with musicals, there are a handful I have watched and been very impressed with. You mentioned one, The Sound Of Music(1964), in your list. Another one that comes to mind: West Side Story(1961).

Other epics enjoyed by Packmule:

1. Dances With Wolves(1990)
2. The Bridge On The River Kwai(1957)
3. How The West Was Won(1962)

thumbs up

It's funny, I'm not a huge musical fan, so to speak, but I have a few which make my favorite lists, too.

More great choices, Lee! thumbs up

I suppose, Titanic would also be considered an epic and while it might not be a fave of many, I certainly can watch it, occasionally, although I do think we've discussed this one.

My Dad and I were discussing films like, The Longest Day, which is packed to the rafters with a huge cast of international stars and Dad said for the most part, this kind of film couldn't be made, these days, probably in large part to the cost, but also because he feels the egos of many of today's film stars wouldn't allow them to see their names too far down in the credits or the fact that they might not have a huge starring role in the film. I got to thinking and he may be correct. That's not to say all of today's stars would behave that way, but I bet a lot would.

Dune

Are you referring to the 1984 David Lynch film Dan? I like that one much better than the Sci-Fi channel "remake" I have seen.

Yep. The David Lynch film. I didn't like the min-series at all.

Neither did I. It was missing sci-fi "straight-to-video" actor extraordinaire Dean Cain...
... ...just kidding Dan. tongue-1

The gigantic worms in Dune(1984) were awesome. I also liked the cast, including Kyle McLachlan, Patrick Stewart, and Gordon Sumner, aka Sting. thumbz up

Another film that may/may not be considered an epic, but one I always enjoyed is, The Bible, the film that told of the first 22 chapters in the book, Genesis. It had a great cast that included; George C Scott, Richard Harris, John Huston, Stephen Boyd, Ava Gardner and Peter O'Toole. This film seemed to be a staple on CBS, which was the only channel we got, when I was a kid, so this film was one I saw on a pretty regular basis. I need to add the DVD to my collection, just haven't done so and I have seen the disc at various retail stores.

I have seen The Bible(1966) appear on AMC from time to time, though usually in the overnight hours=just about impossible for Packmule to watch. I am going to keep an eye out for it on DVD, which I would think would be affordably priced. eyebrow

Indeed. I always wondered how the effects staff pulled off the rendering of the worms in Dune(1984). According to the descriptions by one of the characters in this film(played by Dean Stockwell) these worms ranged in length from 100 meters(the smallest ones) to the true leviathans that measured in excess of 450 meters. freak out

Yes I would say so. The scene where the first worm appeared, rumbling up from beneath the sand as the cruiser hovered over the spice platform, swallowing the platform and all, is still one of the most awesome scenes for me in a sci-fi movie. thumbs up

I can't believe I forgot to put The Godfather Parts I and II on my list. I would consider those films to be epic.
