Shazam! With that one word young Billy Batson becomes...Captain Marvel! Played by Tom Tyler, who incidentally played the Mummy for Universal Pictures. Anyway, I dug out my VHS double-tape set of THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL. Not a bad serial, as far as serials go. The flying effects are quite good. Much better than the Kirk Alyn SUPERMAN serials where the FX crew resorted to a cartoon Supes every time the Man of Steel took to the air. Has anyone else seen this fine serial?

I haven't... shifty eyes

The only television serial of a comic book hero I have ever watched on TV was the "Superman" TV series with George Reeves. This series does qualify as a serial, right?

Thread drift: by the way Dan, have you seen Hollywoodland(2006)? I believe Ben Affleck plays George Reeves in this film. Affleck, who has appeared(IM0) wooden in previous films, is said to turn in a decent performance in this movie. I know you're a big Supes fan, which is why I asked.

I know there was another Shazam television series...I want to say in the 70's, and it was short-lived. Obviously I do not know much about Shazam... :ph43r:

No I haven't seen HOLLYWOODLAND. I wanted to but my girlfriend wanted to see THE BLACK DAHLIA (which was terrible, by the way). We haven't been to the movies since.

We haven't been to the movies since.

Thread drift: sorry to that. Me and Gloria(my girlfriend) have such different tastes in films that we have never been to a movie together, not even once. She likes romance comedies, Walt Disney and Disney-esque films-in other words, light-hearted, "feel-good" movies. Me, I'd prefer seeing Hostel,The Devil's Rejects, or other meatgrinder horror, sci-fi and action films. bravo clap

I remember, Shazam! from Saturday morning TV, starring sci-fi star, Les Treymane. :) I can't say I've ever seen the serial you mentioned, Ro-Dan, but I'm kind of interested in checking it out....is this only available on VHS?

Now keep in mind Shazam is the name of the wizard who gave Billy Batson the ability to change into Captain Marvel. Captain Marvel has indeed had sidekicks although they are referred to as "Leiutenants".

They are: Captain Marvel Jr* (CM3)...

...and Billy's sister Mary Marvel.

When compared to other mainstream heroes Captain Marvel's set of characters are a little bit more whimsical and silly than say, Superman's or Batman's.

Recently, DC Comics has been paying special attention to the "Shazam" mythos and are attempting to modernize the concept in a 12-issue series titled THE TRIALS OF SHAZAM!. The Wizard Shazam is dead. Destroyed by an Eclipso-possessed Spectre. Captain Marvel is left in charge--given the full power of Shazam--and the Lt Marvels (Junior and Mary) are left powerless. Mary is left in a coma at a hospital after falling into the sea due to her losing her powers while in flight. Apparently the mantle of "Shazam" will fall upon Freddy Freeman, who is Captain Marvel Junior. Since Billy will now be assuming Shazam's role as wizard, Freddy is poised to become the new Marvel.

Here is Captain Marvel's present "wizard" form:

www.marvelfamily.com is an excellent resource for information on all things regarding Captain Marvel/Shazam!

*Note: Captain Marvel Jr was Elvis Presley's favorite superhero. Elvis fashioned his famous hairdo after the character and his famous 1970's stage outfits, short caped and all, bear a striking resemblance to Cap Jr. In return, DC Comics also made Junior an Elvis fan.

It's a common mistake actually. Growing up watching the old Jackson Bostwick SHAZAM TV show my brothers and I used to always call Marvel by the wizard's name, Shazam. Most of the general public thinks that's his name.
