During the late 1960's and early 1970's actor John Ashley teamed with director Eddie Romero to produce some cool horror films, all filmed on location in the Phillipines, the movies all serving up generous amounts of violence, mayhem, nudity and gore. One of them was Beast Of The Yellow Night, an R-Rated horror feature released to cinema in 1971. The film's story: somewhere in the South Pacific in 1946, US Army deserter Joseph Langdon, in order to avoid starving to death, makes a deal with the Devil. Twenty-four years later Langdon's soul, permanent property of Old Scratch, inhabits the body of a man named Philip Rogers, who lies in a hospital bed, his face mangled(in an industrial accident) and just pronounced dead by the doctors. Imagine the shock to both the physicians, and Roger's wife Julia, when Rogers sits up in bed, quite alive, though, as we will see shortly, most definitely not himself. Shortly after Rogers(Langdon) leaves the hospital he begins transforming into a hideous, werewolf-like beast with a penchant for aggression and hostility towards anyone nearby. The local police struggle to figure out who is behind the killings and even after they do, trying to apprehend Rogers afters he transforms is easier said than done, the monster impervious to bullets, and going slap off on scores of the police personnel who try to stop it. The key to ending Roger's "beastly" rampage seems to lie with an old blind man befriended by Rogers, earlier in the film. (no spoilers) Observations: hugely entertaining fare for me. The Devil is played by portly Vic Diaz, and John Ashley is good as the man who would be beast. Mary Wilcox is easy on the eyes, and the makeup effects are decent. The acting is generally, IMO, muted, but I think the action and gore keep things interesting. As a horror fan this one is a keeper. The Retromedia DVD of this film is very good, the film presented in 1.85:1 widescreen, and includes a trailer and an interview with John Ashley's wife, Jan. (Mr. Ashley is deceased). If you haven't seen this horror film, rent it from Netflix, or pick it up from Retromedia(www.retromedia.org). If you have seen it then post your takes and impressions of the movie and DVD here, and anything related. All replies welcome. busy bee

I completely enjoy these John Ashley/Eddie Romero films. They certainly aren't the cream of the crop as far as filmmaking goes, but they are a lot of fun.

I always liked Ashley from his roles in the 'Beach' films with Annette and Frankie. he certainly was easy on the eyes and certainly seemed to have fun with the films he was part of.

As for, Beast of the Yellow Night, I thought the mangled face effects were pretty decent and the film overall is definitely worth checking out. Retromedia offers a nice-looking disc and the interview with Ashley's wife is interesting, as well.

Indeed, doing a little research on Mr. Ashley I was surprised to learn he had been in some of the light-hearted "Beach" movies with Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. His popularity with the ladies was referred to many times in the various articles I read about this actor, who died in 1997.

Ashely passed away far too young, that's for sure. One of his films I'd love to get on DVD, but is now OOP is, Beyond Atlantis. Have you seen any of the other, 'Blood Island' films, Lee?

Only bits and pieces, and when I was a teenager. I am going to rectify that by buying a few-I like the ones I researched in which he plays a mad scientist called Dr. Lorca, and creates a monster plant thing. These other movies you refer to are definitely films I would like. thumbs up

You can get the other 'Blood Island' films in a boxset entitled, Blood Island Vacation and I saw the set for under $40, which is a great price, I think. thumbs up

Nice price, Lee, definitely needs to be picked up at that price. Mr Green

I thought Diaz did a solid job in the role. He didn't overact and may have held back to some degree, but it worked for me and as a whole, I really think this is one of the better films from director, Eddie Romero. thumbs up

I was surprised to see it listed for that price, actually.
ghostly face

The ending of this film was also a little confusing for me (warning: spoiler). After the dying blind man(who was hit by the soldier's gunfire), asks Langdon, in his beastly form, to pray for him, Langdon complies. Then the police detective shoots Langdon, who finally dies from the gunshot wound, unlike before, when bullets had no effect on him. My interpretation of this is that once Langdon prayed, essentially communicating with The Man Upstairs, the Devil's hold over his soul, and the power it gave him(e.g. his super strength and obliviousness to bullets) was gone. You agree Kimi? glow eyes

I discussed the ending of this film with two(2) different people at another discussion board, both of them concurring with my interpretation, which was, honestly, something of a relief. shifty eyes

Do you own a copy of this film on DVD? If you do is it the Retromedia DVD? eyebrow

thumbs up

Regarding the Retromedia DVD of this film, I thought the intro with Fred Olen Ray(that was him, wasn't it? eyebrow ) and his female companion in the car was annoying, and unnecessarily suggestive as well-recall the part where his companion leans down momentarily out of the camera's view to get the popcorn nonono . On a positive note I liked the snackbar shorts(ads)-the part showing the couple in their car stuffing hot dogs in their faces was amusing, as was the ad reminding drive-in customers to remove the speakerbox connection from their car before driving off. laughing smiley

I must admit, the intros with Fred Olen Ray tend to annoy me as well. He attempts to come across as those old TV hosts of the past and falls flat, in my opinion. He's not funny and I hate the fact that there are so many women so desperate to be on TV or in film that they are willing to exploit themselves in order to get their 'break'. As a woman, it bothers me and as much as I might want something, there's no way I could degrade myself in childish and crude humor. In this case, just give me the film and the intermission breaks. I agree, especially the part about women degrading themselves in order to get their "break", so to speak. One of the current TV shows that comes to mind where I think women do this are the reality TV shows like The Bachelor and the completely tasteless show that rapper Flava Flav hosts-it's either on MTV or VH1, not sure which channel. This guy's show, in which women are treated as nothing more than pieces of meat, is just about the worst celluloid garbage on television I have ever seen. thumbs down

Amen, Lee! thumbs up I just want to slap a woman for being so ignorant that she flaunts herself and her body, just to gain stardom or wealth. maniac They, make it darn near impossible for some women to be taken seriously in many areas of life. very angry
